”Fer fuck’s sake— where’d they say it was…?”[break][break]

Navigation was always a strong suit of his when on the job, but once every so often, the exception could be made in his free time. To say that he knew the places he frequented like the back of his hand would never be anything short of a truth, but when it came time to introduce himself to new horizons in society, there was one thing to know about him at his core.[break][break]

He was impatient.[break][break]

And so in his impatience, he’d only done little more than haphazard looks into the different communities surrounding and overlapping with his— and among those communities, he’d heard word of a certain Marshall Slade by chance. It’d been years by then, sure, but the name was one he’d remembered for ages, alongside one that piqued his interest when he learned about the crowds it was connected to.[break][break]

So, naturally, he took the easiest way in to see him: the ring. After spending enough time in a goddamn memory, he’d found himself itching for the sort of fight he’d been long since detached from. Contacts were contacted; the name Caturix being registered amidst the rosters of fighters before long at all. All that was left after the fact was to show up.[break][break]

And show up he did. With the taste of blood laying phantom entrancement upon his lips in the interim, he passed through the alleys and warehouses before finding the very place he’d been looking for. The check in process was smooth enough— pleasantly so.[break][break]

(Good system ‘n staff, ya bastard~. Right on…)[break][break]

He entered the premises shortly after, finding himself a titan of a man (like always, of course) amidst the forms of both contenders and audience to be. Whatever they did in their pre-performance time was of little mind to him, but he’d only woven through the masses for a short time before inhaling deeply, a crooked grin tugging upon his lips.[break][break]

”Oi! he barked over the heads and voices, raising his arms. ”There a brat named Marshall Slade in the buildin’~?!”

The fight club in the basement of MAUVILLE MODS & REPAIR met every weeknight and required no cash for entry. People who knew about the club came with their own beer, fought, drank, patched themselves up, then went home.[break][break]

Saturdays were another matter. Saturdays were cash days. Abner Armstrong organized brackets and collected bets. Of course, weekly matches were still casual; anyone could sign up, and anyone could win. Well, ozias ambrose won most of the time, but that was the allure. People came time and time again to try their best against Orthrus' champion.[break][break]

Marshall, however, did not fight on Saturdays. It was enough for Oz to clean up all the contenders. Instead, he oversaw the scene, making sure everyone was respectful and obeyed Orthrus' rules. Fights happened in the ring, not outside it.[break][break]

He heard the newcomer's voice loud and clear, calling for his name. Marshall looked over to see what the fuss was about, only to recognize none other than Cain Toman. The man was an old face from a different life.[break][break]

A grin spread over Marshall's face as he made his way over to Cain in the crowd.[break][break]

"Well, fuck me sideways. What's up, man," he said in greeting, reaching out to grasp Cain's hand in the way gang members do. "Whatcha doin' out here in Hoenn?"

The smirk upon his lips broadened to one side as he laughed.[break][break]

”Ya fucker— it is ye!” the Rocket exclaimed, a hand of his own already risen as he continued to weave through the bodies around him at the sight of the very face he’d been seeking out. With a hefty swing, his hand found the gang member’s with a crisp clap, squeezing it as his other arm hooked around to give his friend a single, heavy-handed pat against his shoulder. ”What am I doin’ out ‘ere? Nah, the fuck’re ye doin’ out ‘ere, eh?”[break][break]

He released his hand as quickly as he’d taken it, crossing his arms with a spark of curiosity igniting within his eyes.[break][break]

”I’ve been out ‘ere fer ages, now, man— I only came by ‘cause I heard ye had a ‘lil tusslin’ business goin’ on. Heard yer name on the street by chance; had t’see if the face matched the name~.”

"We came lookin' for new hunting grounds," Marshall replied, half-turning toward the fighting pit. The first two fighters were facing off, shirtless and shoeless. They raised their bare fists in defense as they circled each other, watching for an opening.[break][break]

"Castelia was a good place, but it got overrun pretty quick with minor gangs tryin' to make a name for themselves. Jack Magnus figured we could do better here in Hoenn, so we've been here for a couple of years, gettin' ourselves established."[break][break]

Smoke from nearby cigarettes itched Marshall's nose, triggering a yearning for nicotine. He fished a pack from his pocket and pulled one out for himself. Then, with a sideways glance at Cain, he offered one to the other man.[break][break]

"What about you? What've you been up to?" Marshall asked.

”Hah. Big pity, ain’t it?” he chuckled at the note of the man’s words, only turning slightly enough to catch a glimpse of the selfsame ring referenced. He eyed it and its occupants for a moment before turning back to the gang member before him. ”Glad t’see business seems t’be boomin’, though— more than it sounds like it did back ‘n Unova, at least.”[break][break]

He eyed the packet offered to him before taking one of the cigarettes without so much as a pause in verbal stride. With a hand shifted along to take it between his fingers, the remaining found its way into one of his pockets, and—after taking a lighter out and flicking it alight—returned the gesture in the form of a flickering ember for Marshall Slade and his own stick.[break][break]

”Lotta stuff, honestly— but ironically enough, the main shit’s like what ya got goin’ on here,” he added with a small, grunting snicker, igniting his own smoke before inhaling deeply. He sighed out not long after, all while a leisurely, ”As someone that dabbles in settin’ fights ‘n shit up, I wanted t’see what yer fighters were like firsthand~,” danced betwixt the smoke that left his lips.

Marshall leaned in to light his cigarette on Cain's lighter. An inhale brought the smoke into his lungs and the nicotine into his veins. He exhaled just as leisurely.[break][break]

"You've come on a good night, then. Every Saturday we got somethin' like this goin' with real money. Watch and see what you think."[break][break]

One of the fighters in the ring threw a left hook. The crowd's shouts reached a fever pitch, yells of encouragement laced with obscenities and dares. Marshall leaned on the railing to watch, his cigarette dangling casually from his fingers.[break][break]

The first fights of the night were always between less skilled fighters. After ten minutes, one man lay flat on his back, signaling a surrender, while the other sat on his chest, fist frozen in the air. Their handlers peeled them off each other while the referee shouted the tally.[break][break]

Marshall glanced at Cain. "You still fightin' yourself, or you doin' more setup now?"[break][break]

It would be a few minutes before the next match, giving them time to chat more.

Wordless and unspoken; a mere thought that lingered within his mind, only to be masked beneath a guise of amusement in seeming response to the furor occurring around them. With both smokes lit, the Rocket wasted little time in flicking the ember between his fingers away and settling it back within his pocket, leaning upon the railing alongside the gang member as he let his own cigarette hang loosely from between his lips.[break][break]

His face shifted faintly in both amusement and pity for the fools within the ring as he looked towards them.[break][break]

”Bit’a both Column A ‘n B, really,” he hummed as the fighters concluded their match, clicking his tongue with a chuckle as he breathed deep once more. Another stream of smoke left the corner of his lips soon after, all while he picked the cigarette between his fingers and flicked it gently. ”More the latter than the former, though— moreso than I’d like. Findin’ myself missin’ the ring more ‘n more each day~.”

"Come by sometime. Any time, really," he told Cain before taking a long drag from his own cigarette. The smoke joined the haze that hung low in the room. "We fight for free on weeknights, just to let loose some steam an' get better."[break][break]

A bookie walked the crowds, paying winners and collecting new debts. He stopped when he saw Cain and asked if the man wanted to put down any money on the next contenders.[break][break]

Regardless of Cain's response, Marshall eventually waved the bookie off.[break][break]

"You can meet some of the regulars, and we can get a round or two in, you and me." He grinned. "I'm curious to see if you're still as good as you were, back when we were just punk kids."

”A chance t’fuck ‘round fer free, eh…?” A musing hum left his lips as an idle eye continuously remained upon the fighters afar. ”Well, Hell if I ain’t gonna take ya up ‘n that sometime, then…”[break][break]

Before long, his gaze drifted towards the various figures standing around them— namely the bookie as he made his way through. A crooked smirk returned to his lips as he shot the ring another, sidelong glance as the fighters dwelling within its walls dispersed before passing a few bills over.[break][break]

”Ya sure ‘bout that, ‘lil Marshie~?” he snickered lowly, offering the gang member beside him another glance as the bookie left. He leaned onto the railing once more, flicking the cigarette from his lips, and with it, a tapering of ash as he breathed out. ”If yer money ain’t were yer mouth is anymore, yer gonna regret it~.”[break][break]

He nodded towards the ring.[break][break]

”Might even end up gettin’ yer ass dragged outta there like some’a yer fighters. Just sayin’~.”

Marshall laughed, a harsh, barking sound.[break][break]

"Hey man, you're the one gettin' old," he said to Cain, unfazed by the posturing. "We'll see just who's gonna get their ass dragged outta the ring."[break][break]

He clapped Cain on the shoulder, a friendly gesture. No animosity hung between them, at least not from Marshall's end. But many years had passed since the two men had spent time together — enough time for either of them to have changed.[break][break]

How much had Cain changed?[break][break]

"I gotta do some more rounds in the crowd, but stay as long as you want. Enjoy the show. And stop by any weeknight after eight o'clock. The garage will be closed but knock on the door and tell 'em I invited you."
