It felt like a thousand years had passed between his first Gym bout and this one. As he walked away from the rather subdued proper of Ever Grande and towards the cacophony of light and sound the Joy Gym presented, he thought back on it, feeling the expanse of space and time and realizing it hadn’t been that long, actually, and maybe he was just getting old.

His Wigglytuff, Juliette, walked beside him, gazing up at the marquee lights and the roller coaster cresting on its tracks, face a controlled, pleasant smile. He knew she was nervous because she wasn’t being as bossy as normal. He’d never had her out in a fight, and so he had to admit he was nervous, too-- not so much about how she’d perform, but if she’d sustain damage, and how he’d be able to handle that.

His frank disregard for his Pokemon had long since shriveled up and died, kind of like his right eye, though it had not been forcibly removed by an angry bear. Was this more of wearing off on him? Or maybe he was just running out of fire to burn constantly hot and angry. Who knew.

A small crowd was gathering-- for the fight, he assumed, and he and Jules walked up to the first person that seemed to be in charge.

“Jett Black,” he said, remembering, at least, to use his pseudonym, and flashing the fake I.D that matched the way he’d dyed his hair black and used a singular brown contact lens.

He didn’t need the second, obviously.

“Here for the gym challenge,” he added, as though that needed explaining. Then he went where he was directed, pocketing his I.D, Juliette following loyally in his wake.

Jett Black would be directed behind the curtains and told to wait for their name to be called.

Johanna did the same, though at the other end of the arena. She waited in anticipation. For the signal. Eagerly her body tensed as the opening act-jester riled the crowd with words of exaggeration about both the opponent and Johanna herself, before moving onto proclaiming that the onlookers were about to bear witness to a grandiose battle. The performer worked their magic as best they could, even with a crowd as sparse as today. Still, they got enthusiastically riled all the same.

First Jett Black would be called in. When he was in position, Pokémon at the ready and such. Johanna’s signal would be given and she would almost dance into the arena jovially waving and greeting all the onlookers.

By now Jett Black might’ve caught on that this was as much a show as it was a battle.

Once she was in position the two Pokémon she had chosen would be sent out. First came a Dragapult eagerly waiting to do battle. Second came one of Johanna’s lesser known Pokémon. A strong looking Nidoqueen took to the field. It slammed one fist into the palm of its other hand in a challenging gesture.

Johanna would turn her attention to the challenger and state. “I hope you are ready, because I sure am. So let’s have some fun!”

He goes behind the curtains, and waits for his name to be called.

Beyond the cloth barrier, the noise was loud. There were horns and faux-thuds and roars of laughter and clapping. While no less garish than his bout with , this was about to be a whole lot more public.

Onyx didn’t really know where he stood on that. He wasn’t here chasing fame or notoriety. Just strength. Just climbing a ladder visible only to him, it seemed.

When he was summoned, he breezed through the curtains and took his place, nudging Jules up to her own spot and releasing Petra to join her. The Aerodactyl, it seemed, loved the roar of the crowd, however small, and did a pre-victory lap, roaring and flaring her wings as if swelled up on thermals of the crowd’s excitement.

Onyx had to whistle shrilly to get her to take her mark.

“Ready,” he said, affixing a small smile and nodding at the gym leader.

And then they were off.

“Petra, agility. Jules, sweet kiss.”

The Aerodactyl’s wings swept and swayed as she limbered up to prepare for a battle; Juliette bounced forward on her pink toes, spinning into a pirouette, and aimed to plant a smooch right on the Nidoqueen’s cheek.

Two powerful and battle ready Pokémon seemed to be on Jett’s side of the field. Powerful fighters meant Johanna had to take the initiative.

So while Jett was setting up she would instead give two proactive commands. “Thunderbolt and Sludge Wave!”

Each Pokemon was quick to jump into action. Crackling electricity ran over the Dragapult’s body as it took to the air before letting the THUNDERBOLT fly at the Aerodactyl.

Meanwhile the Nidoqueen did its best to dodge the unwanted affection from the Wigglytuff. With a firm swing of its arm it allowed the SLUDGE WAVE to fly, forming an almost crescent moon with the aim of keeping Wigglytuff away.

Johanna’s Dragpult struck up into the air like lightning in reverse; Petra rose, too, as its equal.

“Petra, push through it!”

She narrowed her eyes and charged through the blistering attack, powdered forward by her increased agility. She flexed her wings and curved up at the crest of her rise, maw open, snarling towards the Dragapult as Onyx called out, “Ice Fang!” Cold power began to darken her mouth as icicles sprouted from her fangs; she aimed to snag onto the Dragapult’s head wings and shake it violently from side to side.

Jules, meanwhile, danced away from the swung arm and the wave of sludge that followed in its wake. It curled out from behind the Nidoqueen’s limb like a color guard flag being unfurled; she couldn’t avoid all of it, but she stayed ahead of it as much as she could, keeping as close to her quarry as possible and summoning a blizzard directly atop the Nidoqueen. The wave of poison crashed against her stout, pink body, fragments of it freezing like purple dingleberries in her fur.

Dragapult saw the Thunderbolt strike true, and for a moment it considered it to be sufficient. But then it realized the Aerodactyl continued. But by then it was almost too late. It felt the cold air hitting it, tearing it what little it could. Had it not been for a split second jerking away it would’ve been caught in its jaws.

At this proximity Dragapult quickly realized it could not win against this beast in a brawl. A shimmering thin white film covered its body for a moment before the Dragapult darted away enhancing its speed with QUICK ATTACK to try and gain some distance.

Meanwhile Nidoqueen wasn’t quite as agile. And so it felt the freezing cold of the blizzard washing down upon her. Body tensed and shivered with discomfort and pain. In annoyance it allowed a fist to slam the ground with a powerful punch letting EARTH POWER wash through the battleground tearing it up in an attempt to not only hit the Wigglytuff but to make it harder for them to move around.
