[attr="class","rapha"]Raph could play cards or throw dice at a friendly table at the Olympus. But gambling with friends took out some of the thrill.

There was fun in risk. There was fun in being down to your last dollar and glaring across the table at the (unfortunately very attractive) dealer and knowing that if things didn’t go your way and your well ran dry he could rise up from his chair and punch you in the throat when you tried to run, made lighter by your empty pockets.

Or maybe that was just fun to Raph.

Practiced at this-- at losing, and the art of masking it-- he watched the river get dealt.

An ace.

The tension bled out of him, though it would take a master people reader to see it.

“Three of a kind, aces,” he said. It would be hard to beat.

He grinned a challenge across the table to the dealer.

Just like it was normal to dwindle between highs and lows in life, to win and lose in his line of work was also a commonplace idea— and with profits coming his way so long as he was on the clock, it never really mattered what sort of hand he ended up with. At the end of the day, he still gained something. At the end of the day, there was literally no reason to care about outcomes, or losses, or whatever poor bastard found themselves robbed at metaphorical gunpoint by no one other than their own greed.[break][break]

Fuck him if he wasn’t at least a little bit competitive, though.[break][break]

Just like always, he maintained as much of a neutral front as ever—a mastered art, truthfully, given how long he’d worked the tables—between dealt cards, placed bets, and anything and everything in between. He dealt as needed, but with each card he’d set into the center, there was a groan of disdain that found itself kept under a tight, tight lock and key.[break][break]

So when it came time for the cards to be revealed, he’d met eyes with the man across from him for a few moments. A spark ignited within his gaze—an equal challenge, seemingly—as the corners of his lips tugged upward faintly.[break][break]

Faintly turned broadly as he turned his cards over, breathing a deep and exasperated sigh as a wry crease took his lips. Jack shit in all of its splendor.[break][break]

He looked across the rest of the table before his brows knitted in disbelief and amusement alike, and with an air of resignation, he clicked his tongue a few times before flicking his hand towards the chips.[break][break]

”All fuckin’ yours, buddy,” he mused, pressing his tongue against the inner wall of his cheek before gathering the cards. ”Can’t believe there wasn’t at least a single straight on the table— fuckin’ A, man~...”

Maybe gambling at the Olympus had worn his edges down. It’s hard to win against the house when they’re like family. He needed to get out more, doubtless. Maybe he should leave while he was slightly ahead, quit while the quitting was good.

But there was a light in Inigo del Rosario's eyes that caught his own and sparked dry tinder to flame. He was being pulled into the inferno, his skin be damned.

“Lady luck not in your lap tonight,” Raph remarked, swinging his winning hand across the table, fingers tapping idly against the felt as he waited for the next round. “Don’t get too discouraged. She’s a flighty broad.”

He pushed his chips in and grinned.

With a wry, scoffing chuckle, he clicked his tongue absentmindedly while sweeping the cards slid to him back betwixt lithe fingers.[break][break]

”Flightly ain’t even the start of that shit, cuz,” he shot back, his brows furrowing slightly as a grin contested their seeming pensiveness. He left his own hand on display upon the table for a moment, feeding the rest he’d been given by the man seated across the way into the shuffling machine seated upon the edge of the table. ”There’s flighty, and there’s just straight up bullshit, man…!”[break][break]

He made an exaggerated gesture towards his own cards, knocking his knuckles against the surface by them before sweeping them up and joining them with the rest of the deck.[break][break]

”No full house, no fuckin’ three of a kind— fuck, not even a single, goddamned pair, even with the center cards!”[break][break]

A hearty bark of a laugh left his chest, only followed by a faintly growling sigh of exasperation and amusement, alike, as he gathered the remaining cards from the other players. Settling them within their deck, he scoped out the chips cast out by the players—though not without offering the sprightly gambler before him a risen brow of inquiry, almost as if asking, Really, now? in a silent notion—before tapping the device by him.[break][break]

”...Ain’t like it’s any point to me, though, I guess. I get paid either way,” he added, a sudden leisureness within his tone in lieu of the complaints he’d voiced only seconds prior. ”Y’all are the ones playin’ yourselves for better or for worse~.”
