THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

As it turned out, the land of the dead had been rather tame compared to the bizarre terrain of the Ultra Crater.[break][break]
Craters, plural, Mei thought. She counted at least three of them: each one overflowing with thick jungles filled with topsy-turvy plants that looked more like abstract art than biological entities. The stuffy Rocket scientists back on the sub might be able to identify them, but Mei certainly couldn't.[break][break]
The gloomy, flaxen sky cast Mei and her companions in a sickly, dull glow, their path lined on either side with metallic roots that reminded the escort of miniature subway tunnels. Every so often, the ground would shake violently, nearly knocking Mei off her feet.[break][break]
"What a truly delightful place," she quipped, tone dripping sarcasm.[break][break]
You wanted to come here, she reminded herself, inner voice firm. You wanted to see more of the world, remember? Insisted upon it.[break][break]
Mei turned to freya morningstar, the other woman's normally stark white hair looking far more blond in the hazy yellow light. "Well, darling? You're the experienced adventurer amongst us. Where to first?"

it was at the bar - of course - one night when mei expressed her interest in the ultra dimensional pockets. king's malcontent with the matter hadn't fazed her in the least when they'd first discussed it, so it seemed, and freya promised the next time she set out for an expedition, she would bring mei with them.

freya knows that beneath mei's pretty smile is a sharp, capable woman.

more so, she's surprised king wanted to come with her. then again, he may be getting tired of her showing up at their doorstep with most of her blood outside of her body after running headfirst into danger.

her poipole floats above her head, bright blue eyes sweeping over the expansive bamboo forests around them. more pokeballs sit on freya's hip, but she doesn't want to bring out anything yet. no need to call attention to themselves.

"last i was here, we were attacked by a vikavolt the size of a cruise ship. i say we stay low and go through the forest. there are these...offering stones near the craters."

she looks over to king. "ready?"

"We're good 'ere." He says tossing a sharp-toothed smile that fades quickly once she turns.

He couldn't place it but this place felt wrong. Stepping through the portal had given him goosebumps - a task not easily done. If asked he'd reply that he was here for Freya - not entirely untrue - but the reality of it was that he wanted to see what lied beyond too; the beauty, the alien, the threats.

He was brought back to Kanto for a moment. To a war long lost. He suppresses it, burying it deep within' the pit of his gut. There it would be joined by hundreds of other memories too painful to remember.

A Vikavolt the size of a cruise ship? Mei's nose wrinkled with distaste.[break][break]
King deferred to the ladies, which Mei appreciated - not because she knew the first thing about navigating this bizarre land, but because she found it inherently amusing.[break][break]
Taking out a Pokeball, Mei released her robotic Iron Bundle, a Pokémon nearly as otherworldly as their surroundings, but for entirely different reasons. The paradoxes born of the dream mist were apparently of interest to the Rocket scientists, but she hadn't brought this one into their labs yet; she'd caught it fair and square, and didn't intend to give it up no matter how many times that pink-haired Head Scientist sent out her "if you find a Paradox Pokémon" protocol emails.[break][break]
"Some peace of mind?" She requested of Prax. The metallic bird - that so eerily resembled a Delibird, like the uncanny valley for Pokémon - nodded, then conjured a shimmering aura of PROTECT around their little adventuring party.[break][break]
They followed Freya into the underbrush, and Mei found herself sweating far too much far too quickly. This place was humid. Luckily, all of them knew how to properly sneak, so they did not draw any unwated attention. Mei didn't like how quiet it was - shouldn't there be chirping or scuttling, the sounds of wildlife?[break][break]
Something big scare it all away? She wondered, thinking of Freya's earlier statement.[break][break]
"Something ahead," she murmured to Freya, slowing. "One of the offering stones, perhaps?"

her own paradox monstrosities hang off of her hip, but she doesn't withdraw them yet. the shimmering protect might draw unwanted attention, but she has to admit - she'd rather be safe than sorry. that vikavolt had gone toe to toe with three incredibly powerful pokemon and had flown away without a scratch on it.

it took blowing it up with this plane's own explosive earth to rid them of the danger.

she withdraws her bow, just in case, and sends micolash in front of them with a low whistle. annoyingly, the creature responds better to the high-pitched sounds than the low snarls of draconic.

shadows fall over them as the bamboo forest around them grows thicker. when twisting through the area becomes impossible, freya grimaces and releases drusill. the haxorus cleaves through the stalk with a slash from its bladed head.

the ground slopes. they come upon one of the craters.

"yeah," she breathes to mei, wiping sweat from her brow. "i should have written it down when i was here last. they ask for some sort of offering. i brought..."

she nears one of the offering bowls, allowing her bow to fall lax at her side. as she reads over the scripture, she tilts her head. sifts through the pouch at her side with some of the treasures she'd brought from the league.

"the grit dust will make a small explosion. maybe that could be our 'robe?'" she pauses and then tugs the black rayquaza scale out from under her shirt. "a dragon's jewel." she looks to the other two (mostly mei) helplessly.

"that leaves the stone bowl, jeweled branch, and seaborne shell. any ideas?"

"I think yer on the right track; i've got nothin' that meets 'ny of that criteria. Not much variety in the fightin-type department." He says it with a grin that didn't quite spread beyond his lips. His niche was of no help here.

"What about a Mega Stone? Fer one of yer Salamence. Could be worth a shot." He shrugs, not entirely committed to the idea; he knew how important they were to her, and who knows if she'd get it back?

The Lucario next to him twitches, catching his attention. The jackal's head snaps a certain direction and it taps its foot anxiously.

"What kind of enemies are we expectin' ta fight 'ere again? Cus we've got.. a couple inbound. Ooh, now the fun is beginnin'. Let's kick it Kanto style, ye?"

He releases a Greninja to stand next to his Lucario.

"Salt the earth," he says, excitement bleeding into his words. He moves closer to the women, anxious energy peeling off of him as the toxic spikes get to work.

Mei cocked her head prettily, trying to make sense of Freya's words. Beside them, King readied himself for whatever seemed to be slinking ominously through the underbrush. Her own instincts prickled, and she tensed, taking another Pokeball from her waist and releasing Chronos. The Cloyster clicked eagerly as he appeared next to the Paradox.[break][break]
"Chronos is a 'seaborn shell', wouldn't you say?" Mei noted, waving a hand at the armored aquatic Pokémon. It was, perhaps, a stretch. But then again, this place defied the rules of a "normal" reality. In some of the fairy tales Mei had heard as a youth, if you willed a thing to be true, it became true. Perhaps these rifts worked in a similar way.[break][break]
Magic isn't real, she chided herself. The dead don't come back to life, either, a second voice hissed, a warning: the Border had been real enough to be dangerous. This place would be, too.[break][break]
"A Mega Stone is too round to be a bowl, but perhaps if we attach it to something longer it could be considered a jeweled branch?" Mei frowned. Riddles weren't her specialty.[break][break]
A sudden rustling. Mei turned, and was hit with a wave of nausea, feeling weak.[break][break]
"What the hell?"[break][break]
She fell to one knee, a life-draining sensation tugging at her limbs. Chronos raised an IRON DEFENSE around his mistress, allowing Mei to recover somewhat. The Iron Bundle began to glow with a soft, warm light, humming as it charged energy. After a few heartbeats, an ELECTRIC TERRAIN spread across the grassy ground, layering crackling static on top of the TOXIC SPIKES prepared by King's Greninja.

king is about as helpful as a hatchling, but she appreciates his attempted wisdom. her amused laughter peters into something more serious as mei offers her seaborne shell. she nods. perfect. that leaves two. while she deliberates, micolash wavers in the air above them, circling out of boredom.

and then it flies off, returning shortly thereafter to dump things at freya's side, only to fly back out again. freya goes to reach for the items to sift through them, but king draws her attention.

drusill shifts her weight nervously. freya's apprehension is tempered by king's resolve. he'll keep them safe while she manages the task at hand...

mei falls to one knee and freya startles. a hand goes out to the woman's shoulder to steady her and she gives her a once-over. her iron bundle reinforces their defenses. silver light gathers on a particular spot on mei's leg and freya watches in horror as a sprout twists out from her skin.

"micolash," she says hurriedly. she doesn't trust the poipole yet - not entirely - but drusill is too bulky to get in close. the poipole's stinger arcs down, slicing off the bud, and freya reaches for the packed sticky glob.

it expands in her hand, spiderwebbing around mei's calf.

"i'm no medic, but hopefully that holds." her smile is wan as she holds up the sprouted branch; small berries dangle off its end. "and now we have our jeweled branch."

micolash drops to the ground and starts rummaging through his small pile.

"king? whatever it is, it's grass-type. hold them off - we've almost got it."

[attr="class","char-words"]King swings his arm in an arc, rolling out his shoulder from a stiffness that wasn't really there. He follows it quickly by shifting his head left, and then right, until a satisfying crack can be heard.

He didn't do puzzles or their obtuse questions that made no sense, nor was he a healer. He was good for one thing, and one thing only.

"I'm gon' swap ye out buddy. Give Luc a chance ta stretch 'is legs, ye?"
[break][break]
Blaziken rides the bright light of Lucario's encapsulation. He appears tall and stoic, the flames around his wrist burning brightly as he flexes his talons. The muscle beneath his fur twitches noticeably, luc bulking up in anticipation.

The ground shakes, bugeling the advance of... something. King whistles in appreciation.
[break][break]
"That's a big boy."
[break][break]
A massive shadowy form materalizese from the depths of the bamboo forest around them. It's lithe body weaves through the trees with ease, despite its girth rivaling an oak tree. Regal, and defined, the Serperior looks down upon them with the stare of a monarch giving judgement.

But, there was only one King here.
[break][break]
Blaziken's push-off shakes the earth almost as much as the large serpent had, powerful legs designed to shatter steel. It raises one of those legs, engulfed in a trail of flames, and levels a flame kick directly into the crown of the false-king. It's sent crashing, toppling nearby trees.

"Take yer time," he tells the two women, "we're gonna have some fun with this one."

she has no doubt they're in capable hands with king watching them. so her focus is entirely on ensuring that whatever had sprouted from mei's leg has actually been taken care of, and their task at hand can continue unfettered by the consequences.

"i guess there's only one way to see if it'll work," freya says, unsure about a lot of their spur-of-the-moment trinkets they're attempting to put in here.

they arrange their items in mei's crafted bowl. the cloyster nestles in and freya makes sure to ignite the grit dust against the back of its shell. the shower of sparks doesn't even make it flinch.

king's fight continues on in the background and freya waits, and waits, and waits, and then looks at mei with a shake of her head. but then the ground quakes. vines thicken underfoot; bulbous buds unfurl into giant, shaking leaves. and overhead the moon glows down upon them, sudden and imposing.

stardust spins through the air and freya's gaze searches for king in the midst of it all. a deep, terrible loneliness tears its way through her. before she can be sundered, she clasps her hand around mei's wrist and drags her away, beckoning her pokemon to follow.

"whatever we did, it's making me feel...changed. we need to leave. we need to find king and get out of here."

Mei hadn't been entirely sure what would happen once they'd arranged their makeshift offering bowl - or if anything would happen at all - so, suffice to say, she was caught off guard by the sudden quaking of the ground beneath their feet. A small surprised sound escaped her lips, and she wavered, holding onto Praxidike for stability. The Iron Bundle renewed its PROTECT from earlier, just in case.[break][break]
As the eerie moonlight brightened, shining down upon the two women, Mei shivered, a cold chill passing through her. She glanced at Freya, eyes widening as if really seeing her for the first time. A loneliness so profound crept into her heart as she visually traced the lines of Freya's face, suddenly afraid that if she did not memorize every detail, something important would be lost.[break][break]
