His willingness to return to the deep sea is a half-hearted endeavor. He’s got the stubbornness to see it through, and make the effort. But his enthusiasm is a wary thing, retreating further and further inside of him to hide behind a cagey expression, quiet responses, and repeated glances over his shoulder.[break][break]

At least it’s a team effort, he reminds himself, and forces a threadbare smile to return to his face. He’s not alone and lost out here again.[break][break]

The pulsation of the organ that awaits them at their destination is unnerving at best, and he thinks back to his recent conversation with Genevieve Cromwell — the reminder that this is a living thing they are traversing through isn’t much of an added comfort.[break][break]

“No time like the present!” Lam attempts to make the quip cheerfully as they finally set to the task of mining what they can, but it rings hollow and nervous. Which is probably not great given his track record with the deep sea and the side effects it causes, but—[break][break]

“Whatever that thing’s kicking off… two is better than one, yeah?” Rather than be one man down if things got dicey, it seems better to share the burden. At least, he’s pretty sure.

In actuality, it creeps him out to excessive levels. And the longer they mine the resources needed, the more anxiety prickles at the back of his neck and crawls down his spin.[break][break]

“Looks like we’ve got company,” he grumbles when a quick sideways glance gives away the approach of a cluster of poipole. [break][break]

Hopefully that doesn’t mean there’s a naganadel nearby too.[break][break]

“The faster we mine, the sooner we can get out of here.” It’s supposed to be a reassurance as he turns back to their harvest. But it doesn’t settle his nerves all that much.

Lam takes the opportunity to turn back to what they’ve already mined. “Probably our cue to go,” he suggests as he scoops things into his satchel. Careful, even in his rushing, to not miss anything.
