matias had been weird, but somehow not that much different, ever since the ruinous beast incident. just how much did the kyle he fell for mean to him?

had he been someone like eva or penelope, he would have argued back, but kyle was kyle. he's aware that matias was doing it for his own ease of mind and although he's uneasy with how readily he took up the role, he lets him.

"don't push yourself, alright? back off if you need to, and please don't actually die. i got a sygna suit to lessen the impact anyways."

kyle pays him back by making use of the time matias buys for him, excavating materials found in ultra deep sea with haste.

the only word kyle can say under the duress of the environment, in addition to the physical labor he's started doing with his pokemon.

land's wrath from his smeargle manages to dislodge chunks of the earth, making it easy for their pickaxe to break up rocks covering the crystals they have sought after. it felt familiar, but kyle can't figure out where he'd seen them before.

"we're getting a lot done," he tells matias, "but we can take a break if you want to."

his tone suggests that he uses empathy towards matias as an excuse to get out of work, but both of them know the meaning behind them given the situation they're in.

it's familiar to matias as well but the difference is his memory still serves him right. he's not sure if that'll eventually fade as well, however.[break][break]

the sight dredges up memories, no matter how minute.

"oh, right. you were my personal knight," he utters blankly.

the scene was poetic, but the underlying matter manages to creep up to kyle more effectively than any other part of their relationship.

"and there's another, more practical reason i needed you around."

the ho-oh avatar hasn't realized it yet in this timeline, but he remembers well that it was the case before, in the instance that he once thought was just a dream.

as perceptive as he was on other things, kyle has a tendency to tunnel on reality's side of their world than the one thing people find difficult to decipher.

"things happen when i get hurt, right?"

immediately, he pulls matias back. "get back!" the king slumps and the world shifts into chaos. thunderclouds form overhead and sacred fire burns through everything each bolt of lightning touches.

he frantically looks around for an escape, and when his smeargle points to a random direction, he follows it without thinking.

kyle is thankful for the sygna suit. exposure to the core has left its toll on the champion, even with the suit dampening its effects on him. it was the least of their worries, however.

"no waiting," he tells matias. "just go straight. away from the core."

kyle subtly lets go of ores, leaving a trail should the mirages distract matias for a moment.

"is that land hoenn? you know, the opposite of sea hoenn? haha."

absent comments were made, just to keep himself talking. the pain lessens when he distracts himself with it, and he's certain matias won't mind.

"don't think, matias. just run. you don't even have a suit. you really should consider getting one, even for occasions like these."

eventually, his smeargle shows them a path that leads to the exit.
