they aren't the best of friends. they're barely much of anything anymore... but his presence is enough to still the turmoil underneath.

she's used to this, to bearing the weight of the world. she prefers it, even, in the sickest sense of usefulness.

her body drifts closer. radiation greets her like an old friend, pleasantries passed between them in silent pulsing waves. she tries to smile through the oncoming pain.

"focus on mining, please. i'll be fine."

another step and the agony seeps in, filling cracks and fissures. this is not kintsugi. gold does not mend her back together. she merely breaks further apart.

she knows this, understands this, but radiation seeps into spaces of the brain and plants seeds. they spread, little roots webbing through functioning parts of the mind until it's all a splintering mess of jagged pieces.

"okay."

it's all she can say, all she can do.

every clink of her pick axe against the beds of minerals sounds off. different... watery, like a leaky faucet slowly seeping out droplets into an empty sink. if she focuses on the sound, it seems to grow louder. closer.

a shaky breath escapes and she feels the hilt of the axe begin to slip through her fingers. it clatters to the floor in a sharp heap of metal a moment later.

it has no true shape. nothing more than a blob of water taking up space at first... until it isn't.

"fuck."

from the floor, decayed bits of watery arms strung together by breaking bones clamor out and scrape nails along the floor. she shivers, retreating closer to matias in the process. his earth spike narrowly misses her, spearing through the still materializing body of their assailants.

and salt air comes into the senses, foreign and unwelcome.

a faint "no," escapes before she's backing away, all but ramming her back into the elite four member as trauma and memory and radiation seek to drown her. they will, too, she's certain of it.
