THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

[attr="class","skullbody"]The first time Isaac, Ash, and Kepler went to the Border, it was to poke their heads in and take a look around. The second time they went to the Border, it was to figure out what it would take to stay there.[break][break]

Now, Isaac and Ash came to figure out how they could leave.[break][break]

They hadn't broken the news to Kepler yet. The more they spoke of their plans, the closer they'd come to speaking them into existence. So long as they were stuck within Rocket's walls, that could get real risky, real fast.[break][break]

Luckily, their long-term stay in the Border had proven fruitless. The Ultra Wilds, dangerous and unpredictable as they were, at least offered a tempting reason to stay. The Border was where the living touched the dead, and the former's attempts at sticking around would rapidly bring them into the latter category.[break][break]

That meant, for a brief, precious expedition, they would be all by themselves.[break][break]

"No sign of Big Guy," Isaac said as he stepped through the rift. It was fortunate. There was no way they'd be able to speak freely with the titan's enormous weight hanging over them. "We must be further from the other side than we were last time."[break][break]

That just begged the question of where they were. Isaac's journeys with Tempest Quinn had shown him there was a lot more to the Border than a one way ticket to the afterlife. They had also shown him that the "lot more" could be just as dangerous as passing on, if not moreso.[break][break]

It wouldn't be the only journey into the unknown Isaac would be making.[break][break]

He looked towards Ash, trying to gauge whether now was the right time to start talking or not. They'd have to say it before the situation went to hell and back, because in the Hoenn region that was pretty much inevitable. However, the last thing Isaac wanted to do was bombard Kepler with heavy topics the second they got this show on the road. Ambushing the guy wasn't cool.[break][break]

None of this situation was cool. But Isaac would have to be cool with it, because it was going to be his life soon.[break][break]

"Guess it's same as always for us, huh?" Isaac asked, looking out to the sepia tones painted across the horizon. The floating islands bobbed up and down against their chains, their movements the calm of a beachfront moments before the storm. Souls trailed across the sky like wayward stars scattered across the cosmos. The ground beneath their feet was heavy, blunted stone, as if hewn into its intense shape by an imposing creator.[break][break]

"Onwards and upwards."

[attr="class","text"]Isaac and Ash probably thought they were real fucking slick, but Kepler was not an idiot. He knew he was being kept out of a secret and he hated it. It’d started with bristling and slowly flourished into a stomachache-inducing, sharp, stabbing anger that throbbed in his temples and made his heart clench for reasons that did not have to do with his congenital defect.

This place was making it worse. Kepler kept twisting his engagement ring on his finger, wearing a red spot into his skin in its exact shape. He felt awful and paranoid and half tempted to just strike off in a direction and leave the two of them here, be damned of it. Let them scheme and whisper and plot without him since obviously, he was so goddamned unimportant.

It hurt. And maybe he was being silly and maybe it wasn’t anything at all, but it still hurt.

He was so lost in his thoughts and his effort of ignoring the two of them that he didn’t hear Isaac speak; Kepler’s eyes were focused on the sepia horizon and on the lookout for familiar shapes in the fog.

It's been a little since the engagement. The sepia tone of the world ahead of them, this Border between life-and-death felt almost alien. But it felt more peaceful than it ever had been before. It was calming, relaxing, like it just made sense...[break][break]

He still remembers Galar. It's starting to fade away. Bits and pieces come to mind better, but a lot of the faces are disappearing. Sometimes, it's like a fleeting daydream, called back as a memory with the piece of the crown he has. He still remembers the twenty years, but it's getting harder and harder to picture them. Even the piece of crown has lost the same luster he once used for recollection.[break][break]

One of these days, it will fade. But while it sits in his mind, it's a reminder that things must be done before they fade away completely. And so, this trip back to the Borders is twofold; one, to find a way to leave the Border, and two, to tell him.[break][break]

"Seems like it. Glad they aren't heckling us this time." he muses to Isaac, a quiet smile, before moving through the rift between with them both. He takes a breath of the ancient air in here, and feels lighter. His shoulders had an incredible weight pulled away, leaving him, as he is, all he is.[break][break]

Fear holds his heart. It takes him, and digs into his chest like a blade, a scalpel to open it up. His face is covered in sweat, and he feels hesitation. Two black bags form slowly under his eyes.[break][break]

He feels sorrowful... so as he takes a step forward, he turns towards Isaac. And with a nod...[break][break]

He moves to Kepler.[break][break]

"Hey." The fog was making it hard to see anything else... but he can see the trouble in Kepler. He likes to think, even imaginary as those twenty years will soon be, they helped him see his fiancee's heart wide-open. Damaged or busted, or whatever, he saw it all for what it was.[break][break]

"You come here often, cutie?" He flirts, moving to grab his hand, his own ring on his finger. Fear pricks at his heart... for in the distance, something was readying to disrupt them.[break][break]

A set of footsteps within the fog and mist... the entrance, now, nowhere to be seen.[break][break]

"Damn, this mist is crazy today..." It's disrupting, and little does he, or the rest of them know, that they were soon to be walking into a trap, a game of shadows ready to begin. Letting out Spice Girl the Charmander, the little girl begins lighting up their way, waving away the mist in a small circle around them. The Charmander turning her head to look at the trio.[break][break]

"You guys hear that?" Ashley questions, almost concerned.

The only thing he could hear was the pounding of his own heart.[break][break]

Sure, he'd seemed confident when he stepped through the portal. That confidence was quick to fade as the stagnant air caressed his face and flowed through his lungs. The sepia-toned landscape seemed to stretch on for all eternity, and as far as Isaac was concerned, it may as well have. Chills shot through his spine at random, acute reminders that this had been where he drew his final breath.[break][break]

Just as with Team Rocket, Isaac knew he didn't belong here.[break][break]

Still, when Ash spoke, Isaac listened. He stopped his approach, instead falling back to join Ash and Kepler. "I don't," he admitted. "And that worries me."[break][break]

Ash seemed his usual self, at least. Kepler, not so much. He was never the most social butterfly, but today it seemed like the he wasn't even there. Was the realm already starting to worm its way into his mind? Or was something else, something deeper still, weighing on him? In either case, did that mean the horrors that called this realm home would go after him first?[break][break]

Not on Isaac's watch. Not after last time.[break][break]

"What do you think we should do?" The question was sent Kepler's way, a conversational life raft tossed into the tempestuous ocean within. If he could just hear his voice, just know that he was okay, just make that little tether before they were washed away by the storm that was the Border . . .[break][break]

Maybe that'd give them a chance.
