[break][break] jayden awaited at mossdeep's entrance, his eyes shifting over the large ferris wheel that stood behind the space center. how long was it that he had been here with illeana reyes, on her agenda? something bitter swirled in his gut at the memory. he liked his childhood friend, but it was getting more and more complicated to remain friends with her. why could she not just return to her rightful place? things would have been so much easier that way. '

[break][break] his head snaps towards two footsteps as he spots the familiar figures of both Cillian Quinn and Naomi Sato.

[break][break] "this is the place, right?" he asked the latter, who's idea it had been to go to the carnival of all things. "is there a ride you want to get to first?"

It's not Cillian's thing, either. But to those close to the underboss, the recent dip in his mood would be all too obvious. Gone were the occasional jokes or smiles, his stoic Rocket persona remaining in place even with the dearest of friends.[break][break]

Perhaps that's why Naomi Sato invites him out. Perhaps she has another reason. He hadn't asked.[break][break]

Quietly, he wonders if Tempest Quinn would like to go to one of the stops. His husband is taking Galar's aftermath equally as hard.[break][break]

The social media accounts of one Thomas Finnegan, or 'Finn', were not particularly active. There were pictures from last year's Splashfest and a few other public outings. It was important to maintain a mild social media presence, lest his disguise seem flimsy. Today, it gains a new post with a forced smile (including the others if they wished).[break][break]

Things had been hard since the conflict at the Ancient Tomb. Cillian, especially, had seemed moodier than usual. He'd had the same distant, grief-touched look in his eyes that Nomi recognized from the day he'd told her about Lulu Flint's disappearance. She was worried about him, and wanted to see him happy again - well, if not happy (he hadn't exactly been a happy man before the incident), then at least capable of flashing her the usual wry smiles and subtly affectionate gestures few in his life had earned.[break][break]
One other such person who had earned Cillian's brotherhood also happened to be with them. Nomi had also wanted to cheer him up too. And so it was that she stood with jayden cross and Cillian Quinn, beaming brilliantly at them, intent on having a fun time at the traveling FUNTASIA festival despite her own lack of sleep, tormented thoughts, and rising anxieties about the fate of their region.[break][break]
"Should we try the extreme-spin one?" Nomi exclaimed excitedly, pocketing her phone. She'd just finished typing out her own #Funtasia social media post about the festival, on the account she used to connect with other Slateport University graduate students. "Sounds crazy, doesn't it?" She paused, realizing maybe her two companions weren't exactly the extreme-spin sorts. "I like the ferris wheel, too, though - if you'd prefer a slower ride. Being so high up can be really peaceful."[break][break]

[break][break] jayden is - and has always been - too similar to Cillian Quinn in the ways that matter. perhaps some of it is the fact that he adores his mentor so much that he naturally emulates him, or perhaps it is a matter of fate. either way, the events of the ancient tomb had wore on them both, and it was of course Naomi Sato who could pull them out of their shadow.

[break][break] it was impossible not to be effected by the likes of the head scientist as she beamed at them, and even jayden found himself mirroring her smile with a shadow of his own. even if he may not have realized it himself.

[break][break] "the extreme-spin one?" he glances towards the ride in question. violet eyes lift towards the towering steel marvel, illuminated by bright lights. the sounds of childish screams echo through the air. turning back, he nods. "okay, let's try it."

[break][break] he'd never ridden a ride before - but it couldn't be that difficult, could it?

[break][break] with that, he leads them towards the line.

[break][break] while they wait on the line, his head dips towards Naomi Sato. "were you posting something on social media?"

[break][break] he'd heard himself that it was something he was supposed to get into. or at least the board had suggested it. but jayden was no mint frost. he'd need some more direction, even it it was for the company's official account.

Nomi's upbeat attitude is infectious; though Cillian does not mirror her smiles, as Jayden does, the lines around his eyes have softened. His muscles seem less tense, and he looks up from his phone as she queries a destination.[break][break]

"Extreme-spin," he echoes, already liking the sound of that. Though he didn't often find himself in a place where amusement park rides were available, he'd ridden a few roller coasters in his life. Enough to know that the adrenaline rush was a thing worth chasing. Besides, whatever this was had extreme in the name. It sounded right up his alley.[break][break]

Jayden affirms his willingness, and Cillian nods in equal assent.[break][break]

"Good publicity," he says to the admin, tilting his own phone to show that he, too, had been on social media. "Do you have an account?"[break][break]

It would be left up to Nomi, whom Jayden had addressed, to explain the finer details.[break][break]

As they wait, Cillian watches children partake in a game of MAGIKARP FISHING. He recalls something similar at prior events in Hoenn, but mostly the sport reminds him of absent friends. Some kid pulls up a golden fish, whooping and grinning as it wriggles in their net.

Nomi excitedly led the two men over to the line for the extreme-spin ride. Luckily, it wasn't too long. As they waited, she eagerly - and rather clinically - explained the benefits and detriments of social media to Jayden.[break][break]
"If you're a creator of some kind, it can be really good for promoting your work," she said, swiping through a few of her favorite artists to show him their accounts. "I use it to connect with other students in my graduate program." She paused. "It's easy to get kind of sucked in, though. You'll be scrolling and suddenly like, an hour will have gone by..."[break][break]
She smiled sheepishly, thinking of all the time she'd spent on that Rondez-View of Luv mobile game back in the Spring. Social media could be kind of like that sometimes, if you weren't careful.[break][break]
Vaguely, she wondered if the DRK Triad had infiltrated the various social networks popular around Hoenn the same way they had so many other aspects of society...[break][break]
The sound of children and adults alike screaming in both terror and happiness shook Nomi from her reverie. They'd arrived at the front of the line! Taking Jayden's hand, she pulled him onto the seat next to her, then waited for Cillian to sit across from them.[break][break]
"Okay here we go!"[break][break]
Her grin was that of a scientist absolutely delighted by the idea of enduring a physics-defying joyride.

[break][break] jayden knew nothing about creating things. in fact, he was the opposite of that. he did not consider himself a creative, at least not in the way that people like mint frost and fern delaney were. perhaps he should ask their opinion as well.

[break][break] even so, he tilted towards Naomi Sato in interest as she showed him her favorite artists. his eyes flickered over to his mentor. what kind of accounts did Cillian Quinn follow? did Tempest Quinn have an account too?

[break][break] "i do. but i hardly use it."

[break][break] "but that sounds useful," he commented. "maybe some students in my grad program would have them as well."

[break][break] his eyes flickered with surprise at her words.

[break][break] "wait — sucked in?" alarm flashed through him, as he thought of their time in galar. of the dream. "like the ancient tomb?"

[break][break] was this the work of the drk triad too?

[break][break] before he could comment further, however, the sounds of screaming children alerted him. they had moved to the front of the line. jayden blinked as nomi grabbed his hand, pulling him into the ride's booth.

[break][break] and soon enough, they were off.

[break][break] jayden's expression was near-comical as they took off on the ride. his normal nonchalance falling away to surprise, shock, and even glee as they the ride took it's speedy descent. there was a certain thrill to be obtained, even as they slowed to a stop eventually, his fingers gripping around the metal bar. he took a breath.

[break][break] blinking, as they stepped off, there was a wild, almost greedy thrill to his gaze. his hair was windswept.

[break][break] "that was fun."

[break][break] but what next?

[break][break] his eyes flickered to a series of bumper cars.

jayden cross looks to him with curiousity and Cillian offers a well-natured scoff.[break][break]

"I'm not nearly as interesting as her," he says of Naomi Sato. Showing off his follow list, it's mostly related to extreme sports. "But I don't use the account too often. Just for stuff like this."[break][break]

His stoicism is broken by a sharp, surprised laugh at Jayden's ignorance. He at least has the decency to look apologetic, though the mirth still dances in his eyes as he slides into the seat across from his friends.[break][break]

"It's a metaphor," he explains. "For losing time."[break][break]

Their chatter ceases as the ride starts, overtaken by laughter and the shrieks of nearby children. Cillian has to brace himself against the ride as he stands, adjusting to the fact that the world was no longer spinning.[break][break]

But the small smile on his lips suggests this had been a great idea.[break][break]

"I love bumper cars," he insists, entirely serious. "I'd kick your ass."[break][break]

That smile broadens to a grin, and he's already leading the way.

The extreme spin ride had certainly earned its name. Nomi left the ride with wild hair and an even wilder grin. She giggled, feeling dizzy, grabbing onto Jayden's arm to keep from falling. As the world righted itself, she noticed a stand selling funnel cake and made a mental note to find it later, her stomach grumbling.[break][break]
"Bumper cars sound fun!" Nomi agreed, though she had absolutely zero experience riding them. She was just glad to see Cillian's spirits lifting.[break][break]
The line for the bumper cars was longer this time, so Nomi passed the time by watching a trio of children clustered around a Magikarp fishing game, concentrating so hard it was almost comical. Then the smallest of them - a little girl with curly red hair - screamed in triumph, pulling out a Magikarp larger than her entire body.[break][break]
Nomi had never thought of herself as the sort of woman who would make a good mother, too devoted to her work to feel maternal instincts...but as her eyes drifted back towards the two men beside her, she considered them both and decided that, given a second chance at a more normal life, Cillian would make a fantastic father.[break][break]
They reached the end of the line and Nomi quickly dashed over to a bright pink bumper car. "You guys better watch out!" She taunted playfully, only to immediately crash into a pillar, her handling of the bulky car mediocre at best.

[break][break] the wait was longer this time, and he followed Naomi Sato's gaze towards the cluster of children around magikarp fishing. it gave him an odd memory of him knox prescott and his sister, and the summers they all spent together.

[break][break] finally, they were at the front of the line. jayden was unfortunately not quick enough, so that while Naomi Sato was able to secure a hot pink car, he was forced to sit beside her. not that he minded. he liked sitting with his sister.

[break][break] what he did not like so much was the way she immediately crashed into a pillar, causing him to grimace as stars spun in his eyes.

[break][break] "maybe... we should back out?" he said, immediately leaning over to grab one side of the steering wheel and do just that.

[break][break] he glanced towards Cillian Quinn, or wherever he assumed the underboss was.

[break][break] there was no doubt in his mind that their brother would come crashing into them both soon, if they didn't get out of the way.

While Naomi Sato had been introducing their car to a pillar, Cillian had found an empty green car near the edge of the track. As soon as the ride gets started, he spins it around as best as he can manage with the poor controls and searches for the two of them.[break][break]

They're together, which makes it easier; Nomi's pink hair matches the ride they'd chosen.[break][break]

As Jayden tries to back them out of their predicament, Cillian drives his car directly into theirs.[break][break]

"Looked like you needed a hand."[break][break]

He grins devilishly at them.

Nomi willingly relinquished control of the bumper car to Jayden. He seemed to know what he was doing more than she did. In the midst of their transfer, however, Cillian came hurtling towards them and Nomi had only a moment to brace herself before they were violently slammed back into the pillar.[break][break]
"Jayden, GET HIM!" Nomi demanded, a sudden competitiveness seizing her.[break][break]
Nomi had never had siblings growing up, which was partly why, when Cillian and Jayden both had begun to endear themselves to her, she had not necessarily realized that the feelings growing like seeds in the soil of her heart were, in fact, the sorts of things a little sister might feel for two older brothers. Only recently had she come to realize just how lucky she was, to have found the two of them, the word "brother" making sense. The majority of Hoenn's citizenry assumed Rocket to be a dangerous, villainous scourge - and while it was true that declan walsh and his regime were by no means altruistic or peaceful, Rocket had presented Nomi with something wonderful she thought she'd never get a chance at having.[break][break]
It had gifted her a family.

[break][break] jayden's hands reach for the wheel, expertly twisting them out of their predicament before yet another car comes careening sideways into them. it's an an almost-miss, just as he pulls them over to the side, and then without preamble, he slams his foot onto the gear.

Cillian's grin is shark-like as Jayden whirls on him. Nomi's sudden spark of competitiveness surprises the underboss, yet delights him all the same; he, too, has always been competitive. It reminds him of playing chess with Lulu Flint or Razz Kingsman.[break][break]

Jayden manages to maneuver the car for a return blow, the impact jarring Cillian's bones.[break][break]

"Ha! Nice hit."[break][break]

Their hyper-focus on each other leads to a bit of a pile-up at the end of the ride. Fielding the glare of the ride operator without guilt, he summons his Sylveon to help fix the mess with its TELEKINESIS. It wouldn't do for them to get kicked out of the carnival so early.[break][break]

"Where to next?" he wonders aloud. "Hall of Mirrors could be fun. Or the obstacle course?"
