radiation pulses steadily in the background, growing more and more like a heartbeat with each passing moment.

"will splitting this be okay with you?"

her eyes shift, honing in on her companion's expression. is it too much to ask of him? should she reconsider?

it's too late, however, as the radiation grows stronger around them...

and after a pause of hesitation, her hand extends out toward him.

together, as fate would have it.

it is short lived.

from the moment they step closer, the rush of radiation is nauseating. it pulses steadily through the body. purple veins slowly spread across exposed skin and limbs until it's all she can see.

"we got this."

the echo of his sentiment sounds pained, hissing through a grimace.

and like clockwork, healing mist begins to pore out from her body. it surrounds them, blanketing their bodies in wisps of relief.

"is the pain any better for you?"

she tries to push through to focus her healing, eyes narrowing in an attempt to remain on task.

The longer they work, the more taxing it becomes. Even with the brunt split between the two of them, it saps at his energy until he feels dizzy with it. A look over at Illeana is enough to confirm the same must be true of her. [break][break]

Before he can do anything, the mist that spreads from her spirals up his arms and seeps through. The impacting relief is immediate, even if it doesn’t wholly subdue the ill feeling the radiation leaves behind.[break][break]

“Yeah,” he breathes a heavy winded agreement, lungs exhaling as some of the tension eases and he can refocus on what they’re mining. “That’s, uh- that’s some nifty talent ya got there.” Way more useful than he’s capable of— still, it’s difficult to miss the way her voice grits. [break][break]

A pokeball rolls into hand, releasing his togekiss to flit around them with restorative LIFE DEW. He nods at the creature, who remains at attention of their surroundings. “Nifty, but don’t wear yourself out too much. Egg can take over the heavy lifting.”

[attr="class","illeana i"]she flashes a small, grateful smile as his pokemon takes over most of the healing. her mist slowly eases its way into an early death, dissipating within a moment.

"thank you."

while she's certain the mist is relatively low on the energy totem pole, it's growing increasingly difficult to focus on keeping it up. without it, she feels slightly lighter... however fleeting of a sensation that might be.

and as her eyes turn back toward the core, she sees a flash of something out of the corner of her eye.

is that...?

a soft gasp clamors its way out of her throat and she steps closer to lam, body tensing.

"what the hell is that?"

her mind can only supply one thing: danger.

The smile she gives him is returned, along with the lift of one shoulder. A silent don’t even worry about it. They’re in this together, so he may as well pull his weight too.[break][break]

“Of course.”[break][break]

He turns back to their task the same as she does, but he doesn’t notice the approaching entity until Illie points it out. Pausing, Lam looks up to squint ahead, frowning as the creature nears the membranous barrier that only thinly separates them.[break][break]

A symmetrical movement follows as he steps inward to huddle with the head professor against the glow of sharp, yellow eyes. The only way he can describe it is– “A tentacruel, but wrong?” Every edge and angle of the squid looks plated in shiny metallic. Like it’s made of skarmory wings instead. The end of each and every tentacle is pointed with a razor-sharp blade.[break][break]

“Don’t get close to it, whatever you do.” The last thing he wants is for either of them to get diced up like veggies for sauteing.[break][break]

“Repel it.” This command is sent up to his togekiss again, who surges forward just as it begins to cross the threshold– glowing with light, before an AURA SPHERE pulses outward at the amalgamation.

You must escape with your gathered material. Your ally or allies may be incapacitated by the paranoia settling in their psyches, or perhaps, the eldritch mutations beginning to metamorphose their body or bodies.[break][break]

Depending on how much your characters have mined, you may need to lessen your extracted load to ensure successful escape from this wretched place. After all, the horrors that reside here may make chase.

[attr="class","illeana i"]even with radiation leeching life from her bones, she's alert enough to understand the levels of wrong associated with the lifeform before them.

too shiny, too sharp - lethal in places a tentacruel shouldn't be.

"kinda horrifying, actually?"

how the mind can supply something like that... well, it's beyond her.

she appreciates the strength in numbers mentality that comes with lam stepping closer - huddled like penguins, they are not as easy of prey as they were separated.

and with a shaky hand, she unleashes her own pokemon - a smeargle - to join the raising of arms against this abomination.

"help them out, please."

her smeargle, despite a rather vacant kind of look in its eyes, does as it is told. spatial rend slices through the air toward the oddity of a tentacruel - cutting the reality around it into ribbons as it struggles against both attacks.

while their pokemon defend against assailants, she grabs for lam's hand and the look in her eyes is almost pleading. the onslaught of radiation against mental faculties has grown too much to withstand...

"we should go... now."

[attr="class","text"]“Only a little bit horrifying,” he manages to joke weakly, though it doesn’t feel too funny in the moment. The SPATIAL REND that rips out from the smeargle’s power is impressive, and also appreciated. Though the hybrid pokemon only seems to slow for a moment as it works to overcome the onslaught.[break][break]
“Couldn’t agree more,” he relents, the pressure of the radiation dragging on his own mind enough to begin tunneling his vision. Heat licks against the back of his neck in an uncomfortable, prickling flush.[break][break]
But the link of their hands is grounding. He looks down at her and nods again, before tugging her back toward their station. Meanwhile, Egg continues to ward the creature off alongside Illeana’s smeargle. FAIRY WINDS blast against its steel body to little avail.[break][break]
“I don’t think we can carry all of his,” he admits, as he stares down at what they’d already compiled. Not with both of them in their present state. “We’re gonna have to cut down the load.”[break][break]
He thinks as quickly as he can manage in the moment, as his nerves start to light up with anxiety. Chewing his lip, he tries to piece together the best possible exit route, because going the way they came in doesn’t seem too viable.[break][break]
“Get your smeargle, we’re going up,” he points as he says so. Whistling to call his togekiss back, he releases one of his Charizard—should be big enough for the both of them, right?[break][break]
Should she allow it, he helps her up first, then follows suit before the big, scaly lizard lifts into the air on powerful wings with their cargo in his claws. A plume of fire from his FLAMETHROWER rains down on the steel squid, signaling their retreat.
