Zev did not budge when the Ruins of Alph manifested around him and his cell phone's speakers began emitting discordant noise. He had gone through this simulation before, both advancing into the dark tunnel ahead and fighting the pull of the shadows.[break][break]

"Have you completed this scenario already?" he asked his companion.[break][break]

He and Isaac Merlo had not been in each other's company much in recent months. In truth, ever since the S.P.E.C.T.R.A. trials, Zev had lost interest in manipulating Isaac as a tool for his personal use. And though Isaac had proven useful many times, after almost a year, he was still a soft-hearted youth without teeth.[break][break]

Zev had all but discarded Isaac, but as a Team Rocket grunt, he still had value. And helping the Rocket Beast run through the simulations of the RKS machine was one such service.

Strategy sessions at his apartment were unnecessary. As a Beast, Zev had the whole organization's ear. He was too busy for one on one training, and when he wasn't was far more interested in testing powers Isaac could never properly push. Isaac still worked at the Howling, but Zev's management of the bar grew more hands off by the day.[break][break]

It was teling that, when Zev called on him to delve the RKS Simulation, Isaac was genuinely shocked.[break][break]

It wasn't like he had been in any rush to find Zev, either. "Harcourt" was now the name of a ticking time bomb in Isaac's mind. It called to mind lost friends, stained souls, and flight or fight in the face of everything changing. It was hard to even look at him without being flooded in the knowledge of everything that had happened and would be happening.[break][break]

Not that Zev knew, or even cared. For once, Isaac liked it that way.[break][break]

"Once before." He didn't bother with the who. He knew Zev would tune out. "We went into the darkness, and it was full of Unown. Weirdest part? They said something to us."[break][break]

"Depart for our sake. You must walk with us, but leave us. We refuse the outside world."

Zev nodded, an indication that he was familiar with what Isaac described. "I've witnessed the same. So we know the simulation doesn't change if you pick the same option multiple times."[break][break]

The message the Unown shared was a riddle, one Zev was sure Team Rocket's scientists were hard at work deciphering. But perhaps there was a hint among the glyphs in the stone that could reveal its meaning.[break][break]

"We're going in," Zev decided.[break][break]

He began walking toward the tunnel. As usual, he did not look backward at Isaac nor ask for his thoughts on what to do next. He simply assumed the boy would follow him without question.

Some said the definition of insanity was trying the same thing over and over again and expecting the same result. However, life was no closed system. Different people. Different circumstances. The flap of a Beautifly's wings could cause hurricanes over in Paldea. If anything, it would be insane to expect everything to go as perfectly and precisely as planned.[break][break]

But the RKS System wasn't life. In some ways, it was less of a replication of it than Maldacena's silly little phone game. Most of all, it was seemingly static, glimpses of brief moments that glided along on the rails of a preset fate.[break][break]

Zev knew this. He was the first to point out that he and Isaac had been given the exact same riddle. Yet despite this, he was ready to trudge back into that cave.[break][break]

"We both know what happens in there already right? Even if some of the details change, we've both heard the important part already." The riddle was the same. That, alone, was huge. If this simulation was meant to actually reveal anything, this was what it seemed to highlight. "So why do it again?"

Zev stopped before he reached the tunnel.[break][break]

That moment was not the first time Isaac had voiced concerns, but it was certainly the first time Isaac had objected to Zev's decision. When the Rocket Beast looked over his shoulder, the boy had not budged from where he stood.[break][break]

A flash of annoyance ran through Zev, expressed by the slight furrow of his brow.[break][break]

"How do we know that was the important part?" he countered. "The DRK Triad may be trying to throw us off the scent. There may be clues to the truth in these ruins, but we're too busy focusing on the words we're hearing, following the crumbs they put in front of us."[break][break]

It was not a concept he'd thought of before; the idea simply occurred to him now as a way to convince Isaac to follow along.

Isaac remembered his attempt at speaking to Father Winter with Naomi Sato, and how he reacted to any of their questions with all the expressiveness of a piece of drywall. He remembered trying to fight the coven with priam conrad, and how the only reward their survival got them was more waves of an infinite army. He remembered how, until he and kepler brueshaber intervened, Reshiram and Zekrom continued an endless, bloodless battle.[break][break]

The world was cold, sterile, unreacting. Isaac would have loved nothing more to explore it deeply, but his every attempt was thwarted until he followed the program's script.[break][break]

"Besides, what if the ruin is the lure? What if there's something important on the other side, and the Triad's banking on us being too obsessed with the Unown's power to see it for ourselves?"[break][break]

It was rare that Isaac dug his heels in on an issue so much with Zev. His stubbornness was a double edged sword. Many times, it paid off in dividends. The Howling, Beasthood, Necrozma's favor . . . objectively, Zev's mindset had brought him more success than Isaac had ever known.[break][break]

But when he wasn't right, he could be such a fool.

The more Isaac argued, the darker Zev's expression became. The shadows of the ruin surrounded him, deepening, reaching like limbs toward Isaac. From their electronic devices, the crackling screeches heightened to an earsplitting whine.[break][break]

Zev waited for a lull in the noise before he spoke. "Don't fight me, Isaac."[break][break]

The reason was implied, obvious: You won't win.[break][break]

Even as his words cut through the garbled sounds, however, the scenery changed. Triggered by the two men's inaction, the darkness rushed around them, all-encompassing.

Everyone falls through and lands in a decrepit underground hall. The walls feature engravings of what appear to be Unown. One wall spells out a message through the Symbol Pokemon's depicted bodies: the more there is, the less you see.[break][break]

For a brief moment, it would seem like Isaac had shouted at Zev. However, there was no anger in his tone. There was only alarm as he was cut off by the ground cracking beneath his feet. One minute, Isaac was standing at the other side of the temple. The next, he was falling into a great fissure.[break][break]

Bones cracked as the impact tore the air from his lungs. The simulation may not cause actual injury, but in that moment Isaac sure as hell felt it. He stared up at the sky, dazed, before realizing that he wouldn't find his answers in the ever-receding ceiling.[break][break]

This was the longest he'd lingered in one of these simulated rooms. It was clear now that inaction was just as much of an input as action was. "Got the message, loud and clear," he groaned. From here on out he'd need to he more decisive.[break][break]

The good news; they could run the sim as much as they wanted. When Zev found his way down here, Isaac could at least draft a game plan for next time. He was still certain it'd be a waste of time, but it'd be an olive branch.[break][break]

The better news; this wasn't a dead end. As he tried to rack his brain, Isaac noticed the patterns in the Unown along the wall.[break][break]

"The more there is, the less you'll se- motherfucker."[break][break]

Had he been right all this time? Were all of these scenes just pieces of a puzzle? Were all these scenes just distractions, wastes of time to hide the true meaning of each?[break][break]

He made a vow to not let the next scene distract him, no matter what he saw.

Zev felt the ground give way before it actually cracked open. Past experience was enough to remind him to summon his shield. Even as he tumbled down with Isaac, even as he landed hard on his back, he felt no pain and received no injury. And when the dust cleared, Zev was first on his feet, the crystals retreating back into his skin.[break][break]

Isaac recovered more slowly. Zev watched in silence as the younger man noticed the etching on the ruined wall, spelled out in Unown: The more there is, the less you see.[break][break]

"What did I tell you?"[break][break]

As before, the scenery faded away, disintegrating like ash on the wind. Zev caught the beginnings of the next simulation and knew at once what was coming. His cold gaze slid to Isaac to watch the blonde's reaction.

Beneath you, the tatami flooring is scuffed and gouged from the battle that has been waged here. The simulation sets the Rocket Boss as a hostile figure.[break][break]

He says to you: "fuschia has already fallen. nothing you accomplish here will be of any worth."[break][break]

Should you attempt to step toward him, you'll knock into an invisible wall: an intriguing puzzle for gym challengers, but a frustrating conundrum for those attempting to engage with him.[break][break]

"i'll strike you down before you can even perceive the real me."[break][break]

Suddenly, Walsh disappears. Throughout the gym, multiple "Walshes" appear behind invisible walls. Periodically, he will lunge from a secret space with his GLISCOR, NIDOKING, &/OR HYPNO to attempt to slay you and your Pokemon.

[attr="class","skullbody"]How Zev interpreted that as him being correct, Isaac would never know. What he did know was that, to a degree, they had the same idea. The realm would try to trick them however it could, and they needed to focus on what was important.[break][break]

They just had very different definitions of what was important.[break][break]

"That we're gonna have to find what matters, and fast." That was the important part here. "No matter what tricks this place, and the Triad, pull."[break][break]

Little did he know, the next trick they'd pull was a doozy. The Ruins of Alph melted into the ruins of Fuschia City. They stood face to face with none other than Declan Walsh, and he was no friend of theirs this time around. He melded into the shadows, a swarm of doppelgangers dotting themselves within a maze of invisible walls.[break][break]

Isaac didn't even hesitate. He tossed out a Pokeball, sending out Luck & Pluck. With the sword and shield of his Aegislash in hand, he felt much better protected against whatever ambushes may come his way. Walsh clearly wasn't willing to negotiate, and Isaac had no qualms about preparing to fight back.[break][break]

Despite this, he hesitated. Even as the urge to fight burned inside of him, something didn't seem right.[break][break]

"Father Winter and some witch cultist. Those're the only other humans I've seen here," Isaac whispered, settling into a guarded stance. "If its just about Rocket, why Walsh instead of Silas? He was head back then, right?[break][break]

Unless Fuschia City's gym puzzle was key to the region's continued survival, this had to be about him.
