The clock spins on and on and on. Present becomes past. The future approaches until it no longer exists as such. A man blinks. One minute, nineteen. The next, twenty-six. Time marches on.[break][break]
Michael Navidson feels older than nineteen. He’s had to grow up fast since his parents’ lives came to a grisly end. They say his father was drunk. With how little remained of him after the wreck, there wasn’t even enough blood for a sample. He’ll never know.[break][break]
Times are hard. The days are short in Slateport. This city never sleeps. It says sleep is for the weak. You can sleep when you’re dead. Navy, as his brother so affectionately calls him, is posted up on Pier 22. A private company, Apollo, owns the shipping container he’s presently staring at. He doesn’t know this, but Apollo is owned by a little outfit called Team Rocket. He’s hired help on a trip overseas. Just security. Nothing major.[break][break]
One quick trip to Sinnoh and back. That’s all they ask. He’ll be rolling in dough. Enough to keep the lights on, maybe even enough to buy little Gabriel Navidson that Charmander he wants so bad.[break][break]
“Arceus…” He whispers, nervous in the way a kid is nervous. For all of the maturity forced upon him by human mortality, he is still a child. “…rest of the security team’s late, huh boy?”[break][break]
Ironsides, his Skarmory, huffs. He has nothing to say to that, much like he has nothing to say to anything else.[break][break]
The crew is filing in. They’ll kick off soon enough, and then they’ll be on the open water for a while.

Sea blood had always run through her veins — salty, acidic, laced with either venom or alcohol depending on the time of day. For some reason this business was a particular pinch-point. Her father had already called her twice to secure it. She hung up abruptly both times and was late just to prove a point. The kid that was to be her partner in this disproved that theory though, surely a hired bodyguard would at least be at a drinking age.

At the very least, he was on time though. She was not. So, she couldn't give him shit just for that reason. Marza recalled how it was doing this shit when she was young, the disregard she received. There was nothing respectful or just about her, but she could empathize from time to time. Slateport and Hoenn were still foreign places to her at this point. For the last twenty-seven years of her life, she'd spent pilfering the ports of Unova. "Sorry I'm late," She muttered, passing the other to find the log & ship manifest amongst the crates. "What's your name, kid?"

Behind her, Kuru hopped along, offering a garbled little crow-croak to the other's Skarmory. The Corviknight enjoyed being out at sea, even if the salty air did not agree with his steel.

His body goes taut when he hears the voice. An open palm curls into a loose fist as he turns. Seeing who it is, hearing the word she speaks, he relaxes, if only a little. Strutting this side of the law and risking jail time are new to him.[break][break]
“Not overseas. My dad was a fisherman. I went with him out to sea sometimes.” And he hated those trips. Being alone with the senior Navidson was hell. It was an excuse for the older man to drink, which never ended well for him. While he speaks, he looks for the logs. Eventually, they’re found.[break][break]
Everything’s in order – at least at a glance. Navy doubts anyone who stops them will care to prod deeper into their cargo.[break][break]
“Oh. Uh. Navidson. Navy for short.” Ironsides looks at the Corviknight with the same passive, tired eyes with which he regards the rest of the world. He was born too old for this shit. Taking flight, he decides to nest atop the boat. He will soon discover that the sea does not agree with him, but he has precious little choice but to go along with this.[break][break]

She could see the lines of tension in his body language. A small smirk slipped momentarily across her lips. It appeared she was working with a newbie, though that was hardly the first time. She wasn't what people would consider patient, but she wasn't an awful teacher.

"Huh, well let's hope that sea water runs through your veins too." She didn't have time to teach anyone from scratch. In all hopefulness, she figured this would be a fairly routine run. It would be boring as hell, but a quick job. That was better than nothing. "Marza." She said simply in return.

"Should be relatively simple." Then again, that was what she'd say seconds before things derailed. The boat shuddered as they pushed off of port and into the open sea. The sky was clear, save for a few sparse clouds. No threat of storms, at least. She got a bad feeling, but didn't nurse it. It was probably just paranoia, sailor superstition.
