There is a legend passed down through the Hasegawa family. Rumors speak of a cursed sword housed within a treasury of the family. In modern times, where the tongue is mightier than the sword, it is simply a quaint antique. Nothing but a ghost story. A legend foot soldiers tell themselves to make their role seem more important.[break]
It is no legend. Hitoshi saw the sword himself, once upon a time. He remembers seeing it resting in its scabbard, spoken of reverently by Yumi's father and grandfather. Even now, removed from the episode by a decade, he remembers the gentle sway of the cloth wrapped tight around the blade.[break]
Ruination is coming. Cold death is coming for Yumi Hasegawa. It comes for Mei Liu. It comes for all of them.[break]
This dog has resolved to bare his fangs against destined death. It is the second of a million steps on a long road.[break]
It's raining in Johto. They crossed the border some fifteen minutes ago. They'll be in Goldenrod soon. The dog looks across at the man he has asked to come with him. Unlike this base creature, crawling along the ground, too ignorant to even understand how low he is in the ecosystem, this man is a human. He speaks like one. Talks like one. Acts like one. His swordplay is a precious thing.[break]
It means the world to Hitoshi that this man, with all his responsibility, would make time for him.[break]
"I still can't believe what I saw, back at the tomb." He ruminates. "Senpai...that thing. It hated us." His hand is white. Knuckles bulge as he kneads his hand into the hard bone of his knee.[break]
"Thanks for coming. I need to get stronger. For her."[break]
And...[break]

In times of catastrophe, they have no choice but to strengthen themselves. The calamity would be upon them soon, whether they were prepared for it or not.

[break][break] "We will be prepared for it," Jayden responds in turn, his eyes turning steely with resolve. "It's hatred, it's resolve. Nothing will let Rocket fall."

[break][break] Coming to Johto had been an easy decision. With everything that had been going on in Hoenn, Jayden wanted to make sure that the other regions were faring so as well. And if the sword that Hitoshi Inoue spoke of was true... it would just be another notch on the mantel that would provide them an advantage against the upcoming battle.

[break][break] He feels a sense of deja vu, a likeness of a memory that stirs within him. Preparing for a battle, preparing for the end. His hands rest around the curve of his thighs.

He's the first to look away, cheeks red. His eyes are beautiful. Human. They burn with a resolve he hopes he can find within himself when the chips are down. Scratching the back of his neck, he looks out the window. Countryside has given way to the outskirts of another city that never sleeps. Goldenrod is well named. Lights dance like fireflies against a gray backdrop.[break]
"You watched the Spectra trials, yeah?" He asks, as if an admin would miss those for the world. "The gods we fought...they've all made people their avatars, yeah?" The word avatar leaves a curious taste on his tongue. There's probably a cleaner word for it in his native tongue, but the dog is forced to adapt.[break]
"Do you think it's gonna try and make someone its avatar? I think so...and I think all these humans think they have somethin' to gain from it. It'll ruin them like it ruined that flower lady." A conductor announces the train has arrived. It comes to a stop. The dog stands.[break]
"It ain't far. There's a motel across the street from the place. We can stake it out, plan our route. Time it so we can run back to the station and get out before they know we're here."

Hitoshi looks away first, and this is not unusual. If Jayden spent a minute thinking about it, he would likely realize that this was common for him, for them, for the both of them.

[break][break] "Of course," he said swiftly, with a considerate tilt of his head. "If memory serves, you did well."

[break][break] Though Jayden had not been tasked to watch his group perform, it would have been foolish to assume that Jayden would not have otherwise poured over the files. Hitoshi's success was important to him, just as mint frost's was, just as Ashley Shepard's was.

[break][break] "It's possible." Avatarship had never been something that Jayden had sought for, but it was neither something that had eluded him either. As he had once told siobhan burke, as he had once told Felix Gallagher, avatarship only concerned him as far as he could empower Rocket. For his own benefit... he had never considered.

[break][break] "But I do not think it ruined Elisabeth Fiorelli." A pause. "Is she much different?"

[break][break] Before he could say more, however, the train rushed to a stop. The screeching of tracks alerted them to their destination, and Jayden nodded as they stepped off.

"She smells bad." That is the only way he can communicate his feelings on that. Other matters require their attention. Beyond the rain clouds, a blood moon rises.[break][break]
When he bursts into the motel and demands a certain room, the receptionist hesitates at first. She hesitates until she recognizes his swagger, his style, and the open blade. Once a Hasegawa, always a Hasegawa. Thinking him one of their goons, she makes a phone call. Arrangements are made. They have their key within minutes. She doesn't even ask them to pay.[break][break]
Once inside the room, he rushes to the window, raises the blondes, pulls out binoculars.[break][break]
"Looks like I thought it would." He points out a path along rooftops. From the angle of this window, there's a clear path. The structure's a few buildings down. A quick trip back to the roof, a few jumps across more rooftops, and they're back in the train station.[break][break]
"Hmm...looks like the next train's due in two hours. We start the op in an hour and forty-five. Five minute run. Five minute fight. Five minute run to the train platform. We'll be out before Yumi's folks know they're missin' a sword." Kicking up along the windowsill, a blush edges at his cheeks.[break][break]
"If - uh - if that works for you, Senpai." Bowing his head in deference to his superior, he scratches the back of his head and looks out the window. "How do you uh, kill time? When you gotta wait for an op to start?

"bad?" jayden inquired, but not in a way that demanded an answer. he seemed thoughtful, almost as if he was willing to consider how often Elisabeth Fiorelli showered. or perhaps, what soap she might use to offend the dog so.

[break][break] they step into the motel, and jayden allows the dog to lead. rocket and hoenn is his home, is his heart. but this place — it belongs to Hitoshi Inoue, and the hasegawa name. the confidence in his swagger is nothing like it normally is.

[break][break] jayden takes note.

[break][break] a hand is offered as the other peers through binoculars, waiting until he can peer through those same lenses. sure enough, there it is. the path that Hitoshi Inoue has carved out for them.

[break][break] "that sounds like a solid plan," jayden says it like it is a praise, accompanied by a small flash of a smile. comforting, or as comforting as an emotionless soldier like him can be.

[break][break] "the normal way, i suppose."

[break][break] "shower, wash-up, prepare for the op. go over the plan in my mind, commit it to memory. make sure i know all the entrances and exits."
