Cillian laughs softly, but doesn't respond immediately. He dips a chunk of fresh bread into the small plate of provided butter and samples it, washing it down with a sip of wine.[break][break]

"Unethical experimentation," he says without a hint of remorse. "Was a scientist before Rocket, don't know if you'd heard." It wasn't exactly a secret, but Frank Caffey didn't run in his typical circles. His knowledge of Underboss Quinn was limited; he was befriending Cillian, divorced some from his Rocket identity. "Anyway, I figured I'd have better luck if I wasn't so careful with the subjects. It was working, too. They were more than happy to credit my results until they figured out what I was doing to get it."[break][break]

Though time and distance has softened old grudges, there's still a hint of contempt detectable in his tone. They'd cost him greatly.[break][break]

"You have to make sacrifices in pursuit of science."[break][break]

Rocket understood that. It's how they'd hooked him; he'd taken their bait with eagerness.

He didn't know a lick of science beyond the basics that everyone learned in school. However, he was also very skilled at listening to people talk about their interests and passions, so he said, "Wait, I have to hear more about this. What kind of experiments? What were you researching?"[break][break]

Servers brought their entrées at that moment, and removed any empty appetizer plates. Frank tucked in, savoring the delicious, high-quality food while listening intently to Cillian's story.
