At the precipice of the cliff face, Frank's heart raced, pumping pure adrenaline through his veins. Never before had he stood at such an incredible height, the openness of the air around him making him feel vulnerable, exposed. Only the rock beneath his feet grounded him, keeping him tethered as the blue expanse of the ocean spread out far below. Beckoned for him.[break][break]

Taking a deep breath, he pushed off the edge, flinging his body into empty space. For a split second, before gravity took hold, he hung suspended there. The wind whipped at his hair.[break][break]

Then he dropped. His heart and stomach rose into his throat. In the few seconds before impact, he pulled his arms and legs together, trying to be as streamline as possible.[break][break]

Frank hit the water with a considerable splash. He blew the air from his lungs out through his nose at the same time. Pressure accumulated in his ears, but he otherwise felt nothing — no rocks cutting his bare skin, nothing smacking his body.[break][break]

Once he'd slowed down, he spread his arms and kicked his feet. Mere moments later, his head broke the surface of the water, and he laughed.[break][break]

"Whew! That was amazing!" He wiped the water from his eyes and peered back up at the cliff above. "Cillian, your turn!" he shouted to the man far above him.

Death waits beneath him, a flat expanse of cobalt welcoming him into its infinite embrace. Cillian stands at the edge of a precipice, staring into the void. Its call beckons him. Jump.[break][break]

Distantly, he hears the voice of Frank Caffey.[break][break]

Taking a few steps back from the edge, Cillian charges forward and kicks off from the cliff, maneuvering his body into the shape of a spear with which to pierce the ocean's surface. His heart travels to his throat, fluttering wildly, his stomach dropping in tandem.[break][break]

It's terrifying. It's exhilarating.[break][break]

He cuts through the water like a knife, welcomes the pressure as if it were Lugia's own, and soon emerges the deep with a wild grin. His eyes gleam. His heart pounds. He feels as light as air, dizzy from the rush.[break][break]

"Fuck yeah."[break][break]

That split-second of certainty that you'll miss the mark, the lance of fear that's chased away by a wild rush of adrenaline. There's nothing like it. Dopamine floods his brain, drowning fear in pleasure.[break][break]

They stare up at the white cliffs of Sootopolis, and Cil shakes his head.[break][break]

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

Frank grinned, first looking up at the island, then back at Cillian. "Sure is. Killer height, too. I wouldn't have thought Hoenn had cliffs this huge."[break][break]

Sootopolis' cliffs were highly defensible; trying to scale them to return to the top was impossible. There were no docks or beaches, either.[break][break]

Thankfully, Frank had released his Xatu before jumping. The bird flew down until she hovered right above the two men's heads, then teleported them right back to the top of the cliff, a good distance from the edge.[break][break]

"Thanks, Janice," he said to her before picking up his towel and drying off. To Cillian, he asked, "Do you want to go again, or should we change and get to that restaurant you mentioned?"

In lieu of a towel, the underboss calls out his shadow Delphox to dry off with its SHADOW FIRE, basking in the warmth of the purple flame. Definitely not showing off for Frank Caffey's benefit, or anything. The fox is a strange beauty, her claws cut from the same strange, obsidian crystal as the wand she waves to cast her flame.[break][break]

He returns her after, fixing his hair.[break][break]

"I could go for a nice meal after that excitement."[break][break]

His entire body hums with the rush, driving back the negativity that's clouded him so often of late. It was a feeling that wouldn't last, yet Cillian wished to savour every second of it.[break][break]

"The walk there is lovely; it'll help get our heart rate down before we sit down."[break][break]

He points out the restaurant perched among the highest tier of the city, overlooking the sparkling bay. The wall facing the water was made almost entirely of glass, offering a view of Sootopolis spread out below.[break][break]

Then he starts to walk.

The shadow Delphox was a variation Frank had never seen before. He could not help but steal glances at her as she dried off her trainer. He had to admit, the display was a bit excessive, but he understood rich people's need to show off.[break][break]

Frank recalled his Xatu into her Pokéball, then put on a collared shirt and boat shoes to appear somewhat presentable. He hoped the restaurant Cillian picked out wouldn't mind that he was wearing swim trunks with them, even if they were nicer than what the average beachgoer might wear.[break][break]

As they walked, Frank could not help but be a chatterbox.[break][break]

"That was exhilarating!" he gushed to Cillian. "I've never done anything that thrilling before. Might have to do it more regularly while the weather's still nice. You know, I know Hoenn's supposed to be tropical but I was really surprised when I arrived last winter and it was snowing!"[break][break]

And on, and on.

Cillian takes Frank Caffey's babbling in stride; he'd married Tempest Quinn, after all, and that man could go on forever if you stumbled onto something he was passionate about.[break][break]

"Hoenn is..." How could he put this strange region into words? "It's a bit of a magnet for the most bizarre shit you've ever seen. Kanto was never like this, nor Galar where I'm from."[break][break]

He finds that it's been oddly freeing to speak of Galar without removing himself from its picture. There is no need to hide anymore, no need to shy from his past or his family name. The Quinns were well-known in Galar, but he was well-known in Hoenn. Infamous.[break][break]

"Grew up in Circhester. Never stops snowing there, if you can believe it. Hoenn's been a hell of an adjustment."[break][break]

Their conversation takes them up to the doors of the restaurant, then inside. Their choice of attire may draw a few glances, but Cillian's presence alone ensures that no one will voice any ill opinions within earshot. The staff seem anxious around him, a little too eager to rush them to their reserved seats. If Cillian notices, or cares, he doesn't show signs of it.[break][break]

They're given premium seating by the window, Sootopolis' majesty spread out beneath them. Someone brings them water and fresh bread, and Cillian orders a bottle of red wine with a seafood appetizer.[break][break]

"Get whatever you like," he says to Frank, not glancing up from the menu. "I'll cover the bill."

Frank laughed at Cillian's understatement of the year.[break][break]

"Trust me, I've seen it with my own eyes by now. Probably not more than you've seen, of course," he said. "But I've been through the rifts. Never thought I'd be hopping dimensions so easily. Then again, anything's more exciting than prison."[break][break]

Ah, had that slipped out?[break][break]

"Anyway, yeah, climate's probably the least messed up thing about this region. I don't mind it, though. It'd actually be pretty sweet to see snow again this winter, too. You think it will happen?"[break][break]

They reached the restaurant and the staff paid their outfits no mind. In fact, thanks to Cillian's presence, the two men were seated next to a beautiful, awe-inspiring view of Sootopolis. Frank took a moment to admire the cityscape before turning to the menu himself.[break][break]

"Hmm, well, let's see…" He flipped through, eyeing the many tantalizing dishes. "Is this place known for their seafood? In that case, the shrimp and scallops pasta sounds amazing."

"I've been here as long as Rocket," says Cillian easily, not hesitating to shed light on the elephant. "So I've certainly seen much, though the Rifts are some of the strangest among them."

He can scarcely remember a time when Hoenn's bizarre occurrences and weather patterns had come as a surprise. It spoke much to how the region has changed him, shaped him, and acclimated him to its oddities.

Even deep in his own thoughts, he doesn't miss the comment about prison.
[break][break]

"I can only imagine." He shakes his head. "Never been locked up for more than a couple days, myself, and that was hell enough."
[break][break]

Rocket had busted him out, but he doesn't share that particular experience; Calem's subsequent torture would hardly endear Frank Caffey to their organization.

"That was years ago, though."
[break][break]

Now, he understood that to be captured was almost certain death.
[break][break]

"Don't know," he says of the winter, frowning, "but anything's possible. I've seen snow in Hoenn more than once, for sure." He always welcomed it; it made the region feel more like his beloved Circhester. "There's always the Icelands, if not. You been?"

Glancing up from his menu at the question, Cillian affirms, "Yeah, they get a lot of their stuff fresh from the Bay and beyond. That pasta's a good choice!"

A couple days.[break][break]

The comment did not escape Frank's notice, even as he admired the view through the large window beside them. What he would have done to leave prison after only a couple of days. Instead, three years had left their scars on him.[break][break]

"I've heard of the Silent Icelands but never been," Frank said instead, turning his smile back to Cillian. "I'm happy to wait until winter for more snow, though. This weather is delicious."[break][break]

He tore off a piece of complimentary bread and dipped it into olive oil.[break][break]

"Do you ever miss home, Cillian?" he asked suddenly. "I know you went to Galar recently, but it's not the same as before, is it?"

"Still a touch too hot, for me. I prefer autumn, not that Hoenn really has any season but summer."[break][break]

He sighs, wistful. Perhaps that's what prompts Frank Caffey's next question, or perhaps the man is simply curious about him.[break][break]

Cillian takes a sip of his wine to collect his thoughts, pondering how honest he should be. Eventually, strangely comforted by the knowledge that there were no secrets from Rocket any longer, he opts for the truth.[break][break]

"Ah, Galar's not home. Not any more." Had it ever been? "My family, my real family, they're here in Hoenn. Only reason I put up with this miserable region is for them."

Would Frank realise what family he was talking about?[break][break]

"But I do miss the mountains, the snow, the old architecture of the city. Nothing like it in Hoenn." Chimney was the opposite; a volcano, as opposed to snow-capped peaks. Pyre was a graveyard full of bitter memories. "And... no. It's changed a lot since the Darkest Day." Since Necrozma.[break][break]

"Do you?" he wonders in kind, sampling a shrimp from the seafood platter laid between them.

Frank had a very loose understanding of family. He knew what it meant to be related by blood; he adored his parents and children, but that connection was not enough to keep him in Unova.[break][break]

But he understood that other people felt those familial bonds more strongly, and so he nodded at Cillian's explanation. "I'm somewhat in the same boat. I came here because of someone important to me."[break][break]

Thoughts flashed to DAMIEN RUSSO, always. Frank could have chosen any other region to start anew, but life wasn't nearly as enjoyable without Damien in it.[break][break]

When the question was turned onto him, Frank hummed thoughtfully. "I miss parts of Black City, sure. I haven't seen my kids in a few years. I loved this bagel shop on the corner of the block where I used to work, when I was a stockbroker."[break][break]

His voice took on a wistful tone, but only briefly.[break][break]

"But I guess you could say I'm pretty adaptable. Hoenn is where I've decided to build the next chapter of my life, so this place is home—for now."

Cillian's thoughts, too, flash to DAMIEN RUSSO. He recalls the other man's quickness to defend Frank Caffey, and the way he'd tried to keep cards close to his chest. He'd fumbled those cards beneath the PRESSURE, letting slip just enough.[break][break]

Relationships can be tricky, however, and Cillian knows better than to bring it up; it could damage what's built up between him and Frank.[break][break]

"Make enough money, there's always vacation days."[break][break]

If Frank misses his kids, isolating him from them will only breed resentment. Best to tread carefully, there.[break][break]

"Adaptable's a necessary trait, where Hoenn's concerned." Cillian laughs, cracking a Corphish claw to get at the meat. "Can make a killing off a desperate region. Hell, you've seen my accounts."

He was a very, very wealthy man.

"Very true about vacation days," Frank said with a smile. He dug into the seafood platter appetizer as well, enticed by the delicious aroma.[break][break]

"But I think if I went back, it wouldn't really be worth it. The ex-wife doesn't want me seeing the kids, and I'd rather not get into another legal dispute, especially while living overseas."[break][break]

Very few people in Hoenn knew this about Frank, even though it wasn't exactly private knowledge that he and Jackie had a custody battle. Revealing it to Cillian meant Frank was starting to feel comfortable around the other man, against his better judgment.[break][break]

When Cillian laughed, Frank did, too. "Yeah, I can definitely see that! CFG has seen a lot of growth thanks to the region's instability. Part of me thinks it's a shame, but…" He shrugged. "Money's money."[break][break]

He fell silent while chewing his food, speaking again after a moment.[break][break]

"Though if you didn't have this kind of life, what would you be doing instead?" he wondered aloud. "I ask myself that sometimes and I don't know if I'd change anything."

Feeling a pang of sympathy for Frank Caffey at the knowledge that his ex-wife was isolating him from their children, Cillian feels an immediate compulsion to withdraw from the topic. Empathy was a dangerous thing for a criminal.[break][break]

After a beat, in memory of the daughter he'd never really had, Cillian resists the compulsion.[break][break]

"That's brutal." His expression reflects a sympathetic wince. "Bullshit how people can weaponize the legal system."[break][break]

It was part of what he'd always hated about the League. So, when Frank poses a deep question, Cillian reflects upon knowledge he's always had.[break][break]

"I think I'd have wound up in a similar place, one way or another," he admits, shrugging. There's an instinct to look away, but he rejects this as firmly as he'd pushed away his earlier concerns. Eye contact built trust. He needs Frank to trust him. "Might not've gone down the same. I might've stayed in Galar, for one. But I think I have, mm." He laughs, genuine. "A certain proclivity toward breaking the law?"[break][break]

Kanto had shoved him down his path before he was ready, thrown him into the fire before he could grow accustomed to its heat. But Cillian had never been a good man, and there was a part of him that understood that.[break][break]

"I got kicked out of my post-grad for breaking the rules, and that was before I even really knew what Rocket was."[break][break]

They'd only been a name in the papers to him, then.
