Word of a new Gym, in Lilycove no less, caught his attention.

However, when he realized that the Gym involved two people going in together on a… well, he would address that when they got to that point.

With him and his completionist tendencies, it had been a while since he’d actually gone out to get a new badge—why not call on the only other person he knew that enjoyed collecting badges?

(Hello there, cousin!)

Hopefully she’d gotten the message and the address of the former Stark Badge’s Gym—which was now known as the Tagteam Badge’s staging grounds.

Collecting Badges… Yeah she used to enjoy that. But lately her mood had soured whenever she looked upon her badge case. They reminded her of the League, of how they threw her away. Still, when Lars messaged her for help she could do nothing but answer the call.

And so here she was. With a greeting wave she approached her cousin by the entrance to the new TagTeam badge, by her side Aggron walked ready for battle.

Now all the had to do was walk inside, right?

“Heyo!” He looks down at his memo, though he’s been trying to familiarize himself with more notable faces within the league. The shared last name clicks, and Lam looks back up at them, grinning. “Nice t’meetcha, Anderson’s plural!” His hand lifts in a lazy salute of greeting.[break][break]

Casual friendliness hangs in his voice, slouches his posture. If anything, he’d prefer this setting to not be so somber or serious as some of the other gyms he’s encountered. Of the same mind as Johanna Joy, even if his gym is meant to be a learning tool, battling in this arena is something he wants his challengers to enjoy and find the fun in.[break][break]

“You got a preference for indoor or outdoor pitch?” he asks as they step into the open arena. A side door will easily take them outdoors if their decision leans that way.

The first thing he realized was that the current gym was making use of Callan Young’s previous Gym structure—so in a way he’d already been here previously, but that was when there was another person at the helm.

(This was before Callan had gotten his fancy promotion and now restationed at Evergrande for work.)

“Yo,” he began, perhaps more genially than he really meant to. “For the record, we’re cousins. Lots of people seemingly getting the wrong idea about me an’ her,” he added with a cackle.

“Well, Eli, what do you prefer, outside or inside?” he turned to ask her for confirmation. “You pick.”

Surely her decision would swing the state of the battlefield, considering he was aware of what she’d brought along (and was potentially field-destroying if left to rampage long enough).

Lars’s little joke did manage to urge out a little smile and a chuckle of her own. And yet she did not add to the joke, instead diverting her attention to the question posed.

“Let’s do the outdoor pitch then.” Elinor confirmed.

And as she spoke the Aggron did a few initial warm-up stretches, readying itself to unleash hell upon what unfortunate Pokemon Lam would put in front of it.

A laugh follows Laurence Anderson’s joke. “Duly noted! Family ties, then.” He grins, glance moving between the two Andersons. “Must be nice to have a lot of family around. You work together often?” An important, preemptive note to make before the battle really got under way.[break][break]

Of the two of them, Lars definitely seemed more outgoing. At least at the moment, anyway. Maybe after things really got going, there would be a shift in mood. But at least Elinor Anderson’s cousin was at least able to coax a smile out of her. He nodded as the choice fell to her— “Alright, out we go!”[break][break]

The sun had risen high over Lilycove, warming the sand of the pitch they made their way toward.[break][break]

Lam offered them both a thumbs up. “If you’re good to go, so am I! You can start us off.” The massive aggron was impressive to say the least, but he didn’t doubt his own choices. The toss of two pokeballs send out two of his fliers—a steely grey corviknight, and a flygon, respectively. The pair weaved through the air on their end of the field.[break][break]

“Funny you mention that little bit about working together,” he cackled.

“Because whenever there seems to be a region-ending calamity… we never find each other on the battlefield. Dunno how that works, but there you go.”

(Maybe that would change down the road.)

And in no time flat, it was actually go-time. Clicking the Safari Ball open, his Gardevoir, Lynette, would take to the field—but not stand directly at the front line.

“Let’s get this party on the road. Lay down the ground, girl!” he began; and without further ado the Gardevoir spread her slender arms up to the skies—before laying down a Psychic Terrain across the battlefield.

Interesting how this was going to turn out; all things considered. He wouldn’t exactly consider himself a ‘front liner’ due to his preferred battling style—it was best to leave that to cousin dearest to handle.

Gardevoir is out on the field, and used Psychic Terrain to start things up! (1 / 5)

The battle began and they were already in quite the predicament. Flying opponents vs land-bound fighters. Both trainer and Aggron gazed upon them for a moment pondering their options.

“Let’s start slow, Gron.” Elinor announced, as she noted, that Lars was setting up too.

With a nod the Aggron gathered water near its mouth, the small droplet quickly grew into a huge blast as the Aggron fired a HYDRO PUMP toward the Flygon. (Or tried to at least, moving targets and all that.)

Lam barked out a laugh, head tilting back slightly. "The irony, huh?" he replied, smile turning crooked as he shifted toward playful goading. "Better hope that doesn't turn out to be your downfall, then!"[break][break]
It was only a teasing joke, of course. Lam fully expected them to manage just fine.[break][break]
And then they were off! The PSYCHIC TERRAIN spread around them, and he quickly tried to parse out whether or not he could use it to his advantage...probably not.[break][break]
His flygon darted through the air, trying to make himself hard to catch - the arcing jet of water still caught him at the last moment, sending him into a short-lived tailspin.[break][break]
Ladon's wings beat rapidly in the effort to regain balance, the incessant buzz swelling to a louder pitch until it broke in a loud BOOM BURST sent back toward the aggron.[break][break]
Meanwhile, Lam's corviknight kept its distance and bided his time - the shine of metal in his feathers as he built up an IRON DEFENSE against whatever was going to come his way.

There was… there was a reason why he’d changed a few things around with Lynette before they came crashing into this Gym.

He wondered how long it would take before the greenette across them would realize just what he was going to be up to.

“Steady now, cousin,” he said her way, before the shiny Gardevoir raised her hands, ever so slightly—they would need to ground the Corviknight first, however fact of the matter was that the first step of the entire thing was already there.

“Show them what you’re capable of, Lyn! Chain!” he would say next; and that was the cue for the Gardevoir to release the power of her Expanding Force attack.

Now, normally, this attack would deal the usual amount of damage however—the little trick to all this was that the earlier Psychic Terrain would boost this move’s power and try to hit both of the Gym Leader’s Pokémon at once!

Gardevoir is out on the field! Psychic Terrain (2 / 5)

Gardevoir then used Expanding Force, which is boosted when used on Psychic Terrain + strikes all opposing Pokémon on the other side of the field!

The Boomburst washed down upon Aggron, and the large steel behemoth didn’t even try to dodge. It’s steel-hard body doing its best to handle the powerful vibrations.

“Don’t worry, Gron can take hits like a tank.” Elinor replied.

Through gritted teeth the Aggron took aim. It knew as well as it’s trainer that they needed the fliers down on the ground. There were options of course, but since they had a battle partner, the most obvious choice could not be used as it would hit them as well.

But Aggron figured Gardevoir and her trainer had a plan. And so he continued to fire jets of HYDRO PUMP toward the Flygon aiming if not to hit at least to move it closer to its companion.

Whatever it was that Lars had in mind, Lam remained unaware of it for the time being. But if it made for a good show, then he welcomed the challenge with open arms.[break][break]
As the ranger gave his relative the heads up, though, the gym leader’s attention darted back to the gardevoir. “Brace yourselves!” he called out to his own team, though it very well may have been too late for that. The powerful blast flared out, making both of his fliers to waver and dip in the air.[break][break]
Butternut cawed, only barely able to stave off the worst of it with his shored up defense. The corviknight’s angle tilted and he took a plunging dive straight for the gardevoir. The metallic shine of his feathers gleamed in the light just before he attempted to slam the other pokemon with a STEEL WING.[break][break]
Even the massive aggron endured its teammate’s onslaught. It was Ladin who took the harder blow. Balance knocked askew, the flygon shrieked as he attempted to clear his head of the psychic damage. So wrapped up, it left him open to the HYDRO PUMP, and the waterlogged dragon crashed down toward the pitch.[break][break]
As he neared impact, the flygon’s wings hummed, beating at the earth as he cratered in the ground— drumming up a panicked EARTHQUAKE that rumbled across the ground underfoot.

With the way things were going, the two Pokémon on the Gym Leader’s side of the field were catching on to what his gimmick was all about.

Tempted as he was to go after the Flygon, the Corviknight was out for blood—but so was she; and in a moment’s notice the shiny Gardevoir had changed targets; aiming the Moonlbast that was originally intended for the Flygon, instead towards the Corviknight.

(Because the moment a couple of Steel-type attacks touched her, she was toast.)

“Eli, can Gron catch Lynette?” he asked her as he tilted his head in the direction where the Gardevoir had leapt into the air before the Earthquake shook the area; an attempt to meet the Corviknight head-on with the burst of lunar fae energy.

“We can’t keep going after different targets! We have to focus-fire on one of them, and then once the first one’s down, we can get the other!” he added a few moments later.

Gardevoir is out on the field! Psychic Terrain (3 / 5)

Gardevoir leapt into the air; to meet the Corviknight head-on with a Moonblast attack originally intended for the Flygon! (leap is to avoid the Earthquake on the ground, so good luck catching her, Gron! Gareth will have your head if you dinnae catch her!)

They managed to get one target out of the air. Unfortunately in so doing they gave an opportunity for the Flygon to cause a powerful Earthquake to wash over the battlefield.

Aggron knew it could take hits. But it had to be cautious and as it heard Elinor call out. “Gron prepare to catch Lynette” all it could really do was throw up a quick PROTECT as it moved into position.

Luckily the mild-green aura protected it from the effects and power of the Earthquake, but it did little else. But hey, at least Gron was ready to catch the Gardevoir?

Butternut cawed as the MOONBLAST propelled him back. Though the attack itself did little damage to his hefty, steel-clad wings, it still served to push him away from the action itself.[break][break]

And with his flygon still uprooting the earth below, it allowed for a gap between offensives.[break][break]

"Nice coordination!" he called as the aggron threw up a defense so that it could properly catch the aerial gardevoir. Especially for something on the fly.[break][break]

"Again, Ladon!" The flygon's tail lashed in understanding, and the ground began to rumble again with the tremors of a second EARTHQUAKE.[break][break]

His corviknight wouldn't be pushed from the fight again so easily. High in the air, his talons gleamed in the light with a metallic sheen. He slashed them, HONED CLAWS preparing an attack as he circled - waiting for the right moment to dive.
