CONTRARY TO ITS NAME, THE MAJORITY OF THE ULTRA DEEP SEA IS A VAST CAVE-LIKE WORLD. Shafts of light from an unknown source barely penetrate the dark, causing colorful diamond-like rocks to glisten against humid walls. The dim lighting makes the place seem like you're thousands of leagues under the sea... Eerily, an unceasing pulse can be heard like a heart beat that rumbles throughout the realm.[break][break]

Oddly enough, one is able to "swim" through this realm like Water-type Pokemon floating in air.[break][break]

One may stumble upon deep, cold pools of dark water and alien seaweed as they scout out the realm. Segments of this place open up into an astral sea, where islands of mysterious stone are suspended mid-air.

Writing to college in Slateport's biology department resulted in a chain of emails that finally landed Nenet into the inbox of a PhD student who was pursuing a bioengineering degree. The young woman held first-hand experience of the 99943 Mateno meteor and further, knowledge of the odd portals that had opened around Hoenn into other dimensions.

Plans between the two were made to meet at the and Nenet gathered her supplies for field work, all stored up in a backpack; notably, she secured access to a terastallization crystal via her work to test given its origin.

Her golden eyes wide with curiosity, when Nenet arrives the area is as was described - not underwater, but a vast cave with oddly thick air. She felt as if she were swimming. Shaking her head, Nenet raises her hand as she catches sight of another, and calls hopefully, "Naomi Sato?"

It wasn't every day that one was afforded the privilege of escorting a renowned astrobiologist into a different dimension. When Nomi had been forwarded the email sent to Slateport University by one of Mossdeep Space Center's leading researchers, she jumped at the opportunity to be the woman's guide into the Ultra Deep Sea.[break][break]
Nomi approached with an eager step and a friendly smile on her face, raising her own hand in a returned greeting. Her pink hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, and she was wearing the wetsuit she usually took with her into this particular rift, Pokeballs and other supplies attached at the waist. She recognized the elegant woman from the photos supplied by the university, as well as images Nomi had seen of her accompanying her published articles and research papers.[break][break]
"Yes, that's me. Feel free to call me Nomi, most people do."[break][break]
Nomi followed the other woman into the rift, floating forward, unperturbed by the strange, viscous watery-air that permeated the place.[break][break]
"Neffatari Nzingha, right?" She asked politely, having practiced the Alolan name several times on her own but desiring to double check the pronunciation with its owner. "It's an honor to finally meet you! I really enjoyed your paper on Minior colors and weather patterns. I recently encountered a purple Minior, and have been using your research to figure out if finding it where I did had anything to do with the high tide."[break][break]
Oops, was she rambling already? She blushed, flashing an apologetic smile her companion's way.

"Nomi," Nenet repeats, committing the name for the duration of their exploration. "It's a pleasure to meet you." She smiles as her name is correctly pronounced, and then offers, "Feel free to call me Nenet." She listens curiously as Nomi describes the Minior she found, a smile pulling at her lips when she muses, "If several fell with it then yes, they can affect the tides, as well as cool the local climate."

"I'm honoured you read my work, considering your PhD focus. If you ever want to talk we should get coffee sometime." Nenet approved of a well-rounded student - for that bio portion in bioengineering cast a wide net to draw from.

Her attention is soon drawn to the surrounding area - the cave is vividly alive in a way that's eerie, the lush vegetation you might find on the ocean's floor interspersed with bioluminescence from unknown sources. The further the travelled the higher the sense of... something - something alive -... pressed upon Nenet and. There. Yes, she was certain of it.

Pulsing steady, a distinct drum of something organic filled the cavern while dark shapes cut through the air some distance above them.

Nenet stops to begin scribbling furiously in a notebook.

"I would love that!" Nomi exclaimed, in response to Nenet's offer to get coffee. Perhaps she was swooning just a little, but the young scientist couldn't help but appreciate another brilliant mind.[break][break]
Together, the two women traversed the eerie landscape of the Ultra Deep Sea. No matter how many times Nomi visited, the strange, otherworldly realm still awed her...and still made her feel slightly uncomfortable, like she was being watched. Nenet seemed to notice, too, glancing up as if sensing something overhead, lurking above them. Nomi listened intently, at first hearing nothing...but then...[break][break]
"Yes," she murmured. "I hear it, same as last time. The rhythmic thumping. Like a heartbeat."[break][break]
More and more, she had started to think of the Ultra Deep Sea as alive in a way the other rifts weren't. Whenever she ventured here, she felt as if she were intruding upon some...creature's hidden lair. Not to mention the dream mist and the paradox Pokémon that manifested from it.[break][break]
As Nenet began to take notes - which made Nomi smile, for she often did the exact same thing when faced with a new irregularity to study - Nomi crept forward, looking around for a suitable location to set-up a research station. She'd brought along some equipment for taking samples and readings, and she had a feeling Nenet had her own academic agenda for entering this rift.[break][break]
All the while, it felt as if something was creeping towards them, slouching through the murky haze.[break][break]
"There's some kind of trench ahead," she noted. "We might find dream mist there."

Nenet smiles, promising, "It's a date, then," as Nomi agrees to get coffee sometime.

The confirmation of the beating gives Nenet pause - and she asks abruptly, "Have you ever found the source?" She has more questions, but that current one seems most pressing.

She looks down the way to where Nomi has pointed; darkness gapes before them, the land swelling upwards sharply on either side to create a valley in this otherworldly landscape. There they stand for a moment. She wants to press forwards, but that feeling of being stalked has now become oppressive.

"What pokemon have you brought with you," Nenet suddenly asks. There's a palpable shift in the air, the heartbeat around them now running faster and adding an almost frantic edge to the atmosphere.

"I haven't..." Nomi murmured, distracted by the gaping maw below. "...Found the source of it. I'm not sure if anyone has..."[break][break]
She hopped down over the ridge, swimming towards the trench. It was like an endless void, the sort of darkness that made a person feel hopeless. As she gazed into it, she thought she could make out something...something faintly pulsing...not an object, but a visible vibration, like a sound wave...[break][break]
Eyes. A thousand stark white eyes - disembodied, intense, creepily coordinated - opened simultaneously, staring up at Nomi: perceiving her. She yelped, falling back. She wasn't typically afraid of eyes, per se - the Unown were her friends, after all. But these eyes made her feel horrible, like they wanted to consume her. Hesitantly, she peered over the lip of the trench again, bracing herself for the eyes...but this time, she only saw...[break][break]
"Me?" She breathed. A corpse was floating up from the black pit, a dead and lifeless body with pink hair and a petite build. With a gasp, she covered her mouth in horror. Was it some kind of omen?[break][break]
Look away, something intuitive inside of her gently urged. Look away and it can't hurt you.[break][break]
With a great effort, she ripped her eyes from the gruesome version of herself, turning back towards Nenet, heart racing.[break][break]
"Nenet! Don't look into the trench!" Don't look deeper than you absolutely have to...[break][break]
Movement, above them. Vaguely Nomi recalled Nenet's question about Pokémon. Taking out a Pokeball, she released Valerian, the Sylveon immediately taking on a concerned expression when he saw where they happened to be.

Nenet frowns deeply, her own heart racing as she looks around the immediate area; each individual beat seems to blur in her mind in pulses of noise that threaten to distract her. Her hand slips into her pack and wraps around a pokeball, but she pauses before opening it.

Nomi's warning, unfortunately, has the opposite effect and Nenet peers into the abyss. It only takes a moment for the gloaming to shimmer and shift and within it she spies a coalescing shape; she watches. Veins and arteries lace together over a great swath of muscle, each twitch and undulation uncanny in its vivacity. The surrounding world seems wholly alive, beating in tandem, until a spectre of teeth latch into the muscle to spill out blood and viscera.

Her. That could be her.
[break][break]
That could be Nomi, or the pokemon she holds in her hand. Well, it wouldn't be her, she decides, and releases her pokeball. Hatterene appears in a burst of light, and without thinking Nenet instructs, "Investigate."

The pokemon before them grows with a brittle bursts of dark illumination as she terastallises, allowing Nenet to view the phenomenon for the first time. Pointing to the rift, she demands, "Go." The Hatterene nods, and after slinking closer to the rift, illuminates the area with a Dazzling Gleam.

There's nothing around them.
[break][break]
Her face a touch pale, Nenet asks Nomi breathlessly, "Are there pokemon here? In the place? There must be something - common ones? Like a-" she breaks off, motioning with her hands as she supplies the first thing in her mind, "-a lycanroc?" Turning from the rift drops her heart rate, the sense of impending doom slowly releasing its grasp from around her heart.

The shimmering glow of terastallization illuminated their surroundings, banishing the dread that had crept into Nomi's heart at the sight of that...thing: the corpse that might-have-been-her. The beautiful, crystalline Hatterene made quick work of investigating the trench, the DAZZLING GLEAM revealing nothing noteworthy, save for an eerie silence. Valerian growled low in the back of his throat, as if to warn anything that might be invisible that they meant business, but still, nothing attacked them...or even so much as moved.[break][break]
"Lycanroc? I don't think so. I've encountered Paradox Pokémon down here," Nomi answered Nenet, keeping her own voice quiet...just in case. "Abominations that can be quite dangerous, especially when provoked. But they only appear when the dream mist does, and there's none of that around right now..." she trailed off, squinting ahead to make sure.[break][break]
No, this was something else. A different sort of mind-altering madness.[break][break]
"There are also Nihilego...and perhaps other Ultra Beasts," Nomi continued, feeling more calm now, but still apprehensive. "Now that you mention it, I've never really seen anything common in the Ultra Deep Sea..."[break][break]
She flashed Nenet an apologetic smile, as if it were somehow within her control to determine which Pokémon appeared inside of such otherworldly rifts.

"Dream mist," Nenet repeats, making a note to research whatever that is on her notepad. More words flow onto the paper: Abominations, Nihilego, Ultra Beasts. Nomi looked apologetic but Nenet made an absent motion as if to wave off the younger woman's expression. Questions without answers were simply that, things were either known or not.

She now has more things to consider in her studies.

Her head shaking as she tries to sort her thoughts, Nenet glances to her Hatterene as if seeking comfort from its presence before she says to Nomi with a still somewhat strained voice, "I think this trip has been productive enough. Let's take a break and regroup."

Unwilling to recall her Hatterene just yet - she will when they reach the rift's exit, she motions for her pokemon to follow. The thought of leaving slows her heartbeat, and slowly her panic flees as they put some distance between them and the abyssal trench.

They hadn't been inside the rift for long, but Nomi had to agree with Nenet's assessment. They'd experienced a lot in the past hour - horrific hallucinations, bouts of intense paranoia, and a magnetic beckoning towards some beating organ somewhere much deeper below. It was a logical plan to head back to Hoenn and regroup; should they encounter a paradox or Ultra Beast now, they might not be well-equipped to handle it.[break][break]
"You're right," Nomi replied, nodding. She gathered her things, motioned for Valerian to follow after her, then began to swim back towards the portal entrance. She would spend the rest of day recording data from the outing, and making preparations for a return trip.[break][break]
"I would be happy to accompany you again," Nomi told Nenet as they exited. "It's a pleasure to explore such places - however dangerous - with someone else so scientifically inclined."[break][break]
