“Yeah.” And oh how he wishes it wasn’t so. “Ultra beasts in the sea. Ghosts in the sky. Dead—” he hates himself for using this word. Really, truly hates himself, but it conveys the point. “—zombies come up from the rifts. Zombies of dead Pokemon. Smart enough to get out. They get themselves into trouble. Had a Venusaur plant itself in the ground and start killing passing Pokemon. Sneasels snatch kids. It’s bad, man.”[break][break]
Bad is an understatement. Jirachi listens curiously from the backseat. Whatever the wishing star thinks about all of that, he doesn’t share his insight. Burgers, however, rouse him, once they order and peel out.[break][break]
They settle into a quiet spot on the beach soon after. It’s on the outskirts of town, overlooking an empty stretch of sand. A blue ocean stretches on endlessly. Far off, hints of distant landmass sit on the edge of imagination.[break][break]
“There aren’t enough rangers down here to deal with everything. Not enough military personnel or law enforcement officers.” Tearing into his burger with a frustrated bite, he tries to soothe himself by looking at the ocean. “Guess there are bigger fish to fry on the mainland.”

He could only cringe at how bad things were down here.

(Wasn’t it also here, out at Dewford that some people had gone to, where they’d met the eponymous so-called ‘Father Winter’ and had seemingly been transported to another dimension?)

“…is that why you really chose Dewford?” he guessed once he’d taken a bite out of the burger he’d bought. To be fair, he’d picked up the tab on quite the spread before them—but he didn’t mind that.

He then searched through his head, trying to remember if there was someone—nope, there was nobody willing to take the Dewford spot in the Ranger captains roster. Most everyone had taken the big cities and then some…

“With you and the yee-haw’ing though, I believe you and your overwhelming charisma are up to it. Then again, having some help out here would definitely relieve the load you have on your shoulders. I’ll see what I can do.”

He would take a mental note about it, also adding the little bit about the Ultra Beasts seemingly appearing out of the seams in Granite Cave.

They’re kind folk, don’t know what they’re dealing with. Guess this isn’t the best attitude for a guy with my job, but…”[break][break]
He looks first to Lars, then to Jirachi. The star busies itself with a solar system of chicken nuggets floating around his head. Navy’s grim frown brightens.[break][break]
“Don’t play with your food, kid.” He says like the star was any other child. Jirachi listens, bringing one to his mouth. Black eyes watch in with quiet intensity. He, too, listens.[break][break]
“You have to make your own justice. These people dunno how to deal with Rocket or the rift. Someone’s gotta help ‘em. They haven’t had a gym leader in years, these problems aren’t going anywhere. You get it, don’t you?” He turns to Lars. “You’re doing the same thing, but for the whole region.”

And that’s bumpkins for you. Once you’re one of them, they will absolutely defend you to their very last… which was what exactly happened to Navy out here.

He couldn’t blame the other for picking Dewford—despite the fact that it was mostly isolated from the rest of the mainland, there was also that rift down within Granite Cave to contend with… honestly, it was a surprise that nobody from the Rangers had volunteered to be the Oldale captain yet.

(Must’ve been because of the remoteness of the location, for one thing.)

“I don’t blame you,” he hummed quietly as he picked through the last of his fries, smearing ketchup all over them before shoveling them into his mouth.

“It gets tiring, having to manage everything across the entire region,” he breathed out as he took another drink from the almost-empty cup of soda he had. “But… somehow, I manage.”

The tiredness in his voice was evident even from here, though.
