Tonight was an important night, for the ecosystem of the Petalburg Woods, the Ledian's mating cycle was taking place during the full, sparkling moon, and of course the pollination of their population was imperative for the continued livelihood of the forrest.[break]
It was a quiet, breezy night, the sun had set already and the full moon shone bright in the night sky, but it still didn't glitter as much as the dust that covered the leaves and branches of the surrounding trees, the buzzing of Ledian a constant hum.[break][break]
Yuina remained quiet, and remained nestled within a group of tree trunks, careful not to disturb the bug types in the trees, with her partner that was with her on this mission, another ranger named Gwendolyn.[break][break]
"Noct will be able to keep an eye on things in the shadows, and I have an Electrode for backup if we need it. We should be able to keep any flying types from hurting the Ledian for sure," Yuina spoke in a low, quiet tone, but she smiled all the same, excited at being out for a mission, delighted at being able to help the Pokemon, and happy to have a partner out with her to work together!

A night assignment? This must have been a pretty big assignment if she was being asked to accompany another ranger at this time of night. She would have been up anyway, so there really wasn’t any reason to ignore this. So here Gwen in Petalberg Woods. She rested by Yuina, careful not to disturb her too much with questions. The bug types flying around were something else. Gwen couldn’t take her eyes off of them flying around as a strange feeling of excitement filled her systems. "This is beautiful." she told Yuina. "Do they do this a whole bunch?"

It took some amount of remiding from Yuina that the rookie was able to remember exactly why they had come here. This was mating season of some kind, and they were vulnerable to other flying types. A pokeball found its way into Gwen’s hand that contained her first ever Pokemon, a Magneton. "I’ll be ready if any come! Don’t worry." She whispered to her partner. It was hard to take her eyes off of the many Ledian around them. There were just way too many in one space now.

While Yuina still had very little going for her in the knowledge about Pokemon department, she could at least try and do her research ahead of time to make things make sense. She didn't even know what the Pokemon Ledian was before being assigned to this mission, so she did a little digging and a little research before hand to make sure that she could be prepared. Though... She wasn't prepared for questions from her partner on this mission...[break][break]
"Hmm? Oh, uh, I'm not really sure... I don't know what their mating cycle is like...," Yuina said, still quiet, but also maybe a bit defeated, she hoped that Gwendolyn didn't see her as some higher rank ranger than she was? If Yuina had to guess, they were likely on the same level... But she also wanted to be helpful still, they were supposed to be successful after all.[break]
"What I do know though is that nocturnal flying type Pokemon is what we need to be most concerned with," Yuina returned then, having done research on this bit to make sure she could be prepared for what they might face.[break][break]
"What we could expect to see that might cause some trouble are things like Golbat, Noctowl, or maybe Honchkrow," she explained, though her own frame of reference was very small. She'd just learned about these Pokemon as she was doing research on the Ledian. She knew they were flying type Pokemon each, but that was about it...

Even if Yuina didn’t know much, Gwen couldn’t fault her for it. She was just as clueless about most of the Pokemon in the region as she was about Ledian specifically. Still, just seeing them so active like this caught her eye. ”It’s okay. I don’t really go outside like this a lot. It’s kind of nice seeing this.” She kept her eyes peeled, looking around for any approaching predators as she’d move about and try to get a better view on things. There were five minutes into this kind of duty and things were going smoothly. But just as it did when things were at their best, a surprise came up!

One Ledian cried out in pain, dropping to the ground as it had been poisoned. Its wings buzzed in an irregular pattern while trying to lift itself. The offender was a Golbat in the sky. One of a small pack that had begun to dive bomb the mating cycle. Gwen jumped back in surprise, calling out her Magneton. They bunched up Pokemon and let out a series of soulless chirps while she worked to defend any of the Ledian that tried to fight back. An Electro Ball burst into a pair busy trying to capture one Ledian, sending them back. One Golbat did retaliate against her, hitting Gwen with an Air Cutter as she’d dive out of the way and tumbled across the field.

”Yuina! Do we have a plan? Th-There’s way too many!”

Fortunately it seemed that what bit of research she did do placated her partner in this, and for what it was worth it seemed they might have been on the same experience level? At least that was comforting, to a point though, if something wild happened that she hadn't looked at in her small bit of research beforehand... Hopefully they would be able to handle it though?[break]
"Well, thank you for coming out here with me? It's nice having a partner to go out and help the Pokemon with," Yuina returned, hoping that this was at least a bit of positive reinforcement perhaps? And encouraging enough that they might work together again in the future? She hoped that succeeding here with someone on her same level too might help both of them with just a little bit of confidence in what they might try and set out to do in the future.[break][break]
Just when it seemed things might have stayed quiet for the evening, the sound of echoed clicks and screeching started to fill the air above the buzzing hum of the Ledian, and as one Ledian fell to the ground after being attacked, the field was being descended upon by a colony of Golbat. They were diving in for whatever they could, and Gwen sent out a Pokemon to defend, but as an attack slashed through the leaves and branches of the tree trunks they huddled in, Yuina knew they had to go on the defensive.[break][break]
"It's okay, we got it! Noct," Yuina assured, and she called out for the ghost that she knew had stayed in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike. The ghost's large and imposing figure appeared, just barely, in the darkness, shrouded by the shadows of the trees, and she lifted her hands out at the swooping Golbat, using Telekinesis to hold the handful of them suspended in her dark grasp. The bats screeched and clicked, but couldn't break free, and that was their perfect opportunity.[break]
"Now Gwen, your Pokemon can get them," Yuina called, hoping that this would be enough to fend off the Golbat!
