Despite being down in the valley of Route 111, the sun above was still brutal, leaving very little shade to hide underneath. Doing her best to ignore the weather Nenet trudges on with her Metagross scurrying alongside the cliffs to the east. They're there for one thing: to catch more pokemon for Nenet's collection and study.

A movement beneath a small copse of trees draws Nenet's attention. She heaves a sigh, pulling out a bottle of water and sipping at it before striding towards the movement in hopes of finding something to catch.

With a stretch and a yawn, Jack eased himself to his feet from where he was resting at the base of the tree. He had welcomed the brief respite from Route 111's beating sun, but if he was going to catch any pokemon today, he needed to get moving. Poe's ghostly form shimmered into view from around one side of the tree and as Jack turned toward the lampent, he saw a stranger approaching. Resisting the urge to shout in greeting and spook any nearby pokemon, Jack instead waved to the stranger jovially.[break][break]

Nenet's eyes sparkle as she places a trainer where she expected a pokemon. She lifts her own hand in greeting, praising as she gets nearer, "Good call," before some rustling in the dry grass draws her attention.

A little Cyndaquil springs out and her Metagross bolts into action; dropping from the cliffs above, the Metagross slams down into the ground and pins the unsuspecting Cyndaquil with a well-placed Hammer Arm.

Tossing a pokeball to catch the dazed Cyndaquil, she they says to the lazing man with a touch of mirth, "Don't get a sunburn."

A curious bonsly peeked her head out from a clump of grass, curious of the commotion. Jack smiled at the pokemon as it asw enveloped in an undulated violet beam from Rayth's confuse ray. With a casual flick of his wrist, Jack tossed an empty pokeball at the little pokemon as it spun dazedly in place.[break][break]

"Get a sunburn and ruin this beautiful complexion? I wouldn't dream of it," Jack replied, winking to let the woman know he wasn't that full of himself. Well not quite that full of himself, at least. "The name's Jack, by the by. I'm out on my Ranger patrol and catching some pokemon," he announced proudly as a kind smile flickered on his lips. "I'd offer my assistance but it seems like you and your metagross wouldn't need it."

Nenet watches as the Bonsly is disposed of and caught before she grins with amusement at Jack's reply. She asserts, "Good man," as to guarding his complexion.

"Nenet," she then supplies before saying, "I would say I'm surprised I've never met you before, but I shirk as many of those Ranger meetings as I can." Her golden eyes sparkling now she asks, "Where do you usually patrol? I'm based in Mossdeep, but only go every once in a blue moon."

As she speaks, Nenet glances over to watch her Metagross already engaged with a Graveler; heavy blows are exchanged until the Graveler flops over in a daze, after which Nenet tosses a pokeball to catch it.

"Oh a fellow Ranger!" Jack exclaimed excitedly. "To be honest, after the big meeting we had before the meteor, I skip as many meetings as I possibly can, too," he confessed, rubbing the back of his head with an embarrassed grin. "I'm based out of Verdanturf but it's a pretty quiet station so I end up taking assignments all over. I've only lived in Hoenn for a couple years so it is a good excuse to get out and experience the region."[break][break]

While he was taking, he noticed a strange pokemon approaching. A quick glance at his pokedex identified one of the new Paldean pokemon. Without a sound, Rayth appeared behind the glimmora and encircled it in a hug. The lampent's flame burned brighter as it sapped the energy from the foreign pokemon and Jack was quick to throw a pokeball before his lampent could drain it completely. Turning back to his compatriot, Jack said, "I haven't had a chance to visit Mossdeep yet. The only thing I know about it is that it has a space center. I'll have to see if they offer tours so I can write about it for my travel blog."

Nenet gives a faint nod of acknowledgement as to Jack's relatively new status to Hoenn as she confesses, "I've only been here a year myself. I moved to be closer to study the meteor."

"At the space centre, coincidentally." She grins now, mirth laced in her voice as she offers, "Come by sometime and ask for me, I'll give you that tour. Actually." Nenet pauses, pulling out her phone and tapping through a few screens before offering it to Jack, "Give me your email and we'll set something up? My schedule is erratic."

A glance over her shoulder reveals her Metagross scrapping with a Onix in the nearby scrub. They slam into one another, pieces of rock flying at their impacts until the Metagross finally seems to get the upper hand. As the Onix lies there dazed, Nenet throws a pokeball.

"Oh wow that is so cool!" Jack enthused as he tapped his e-mail into Nenet's phone. He glanced briefly at the metagross and onix before saving his contact information and passing the device back.[break][break]

A suspicious lack of sound caused him to glance around to spot a confused cyndaquil struggling weakly in the arms of his lampent. Jack made a shooing motion with his hand and Rayth released the pokemon before Jack tossed a pokeball at it. Turning back to Nenet, he asked, "Now that the meteor business is over, what are you studying at the space center?" Jack tilted his head curiously before adding, "Sorry, I've never met someone with such a unique job before."

As Jack tapped away on the phone, that fleeting moment allowed for a Salandint to scurry out from the rocks. Nenet and the lizard observe one another briefly, and when it doesn't move, she simply tosses a pokeball and hopes for the best.

With that accomplished she then takes the phone back, her eyes brightening as Jack's question. "I study Minior mostly. I hope to one day surmise where they originate from. Otherwise I do astrological calculations of star trajectories and estimated gravities for the Observatory. Too much math, basically."

"And don't apologise - I do love talking about my job." She winks playfully, and then asks, "Tell me more about your travel blog?"

Jack's mouth formed into a silent O of amazement as Nenet described her work. "Your job sounds like the coolest job ever if it weren't for the math!" he joked to Nenet.[break][break]

"I guess my job is kind of cool too," he replies after thinking for a moment. "I started writing about different places I would visit in Galar back during uni. Pretty soon some of the local tourism boards were sponsoring me to attend their trips and events and it sort of took off from there. When I moved to Hoenn, the blog got event more popular. So I split my time between writing and Ranger duties, and try to combine them when I can."[break][break]

Jack spotted a small torchic at the same time as Rayth, though the speedy little pokemon ran circles around the pursuing lampent. Jack lined up a throw and tossed a pokeball as the torchic passed. Turning back to Nenet, he said, "The blog is called Beyond the Horizon, if you ever get bored waiting for one of your experiments to finish at work. I'm always taking destination suggestions too!"
