THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

Finally, after a ridiculously pitiful (and distracting) attempt to get the tent pitched (in more ways than one, as it turned out,) Emerson finally manages to get the stupid thing set up. "Alright," he huffs, hands on his hips as he looks at the tent in triumph before he looks back over his shoulder at caden maher. "It's done. Operation camp out is a go."[break][break]

It feels sort of like a death wish, trying to last out 'til morning in this place. So that's why he's asked the other to come with him. For the reassurance of a familiar face. And Caden usually seems so level-headed. So surely as spooky as the place is, it's bound to go better than the last time he was here.[break][break]

Right...right??[break][break]

"Seems like it's getting darker earlier than usual," he mutters as he finally takes stock of the place. Sure enough, the sun is dropping fast. The fog and general air of the place makes it seem even darker.[break][break]

[attr="class","body"] Not many things surprise him. But in the last months, he's become almost a different person.

[break][break] But it did surprise him when emerson whitlock asks him out on the excursion, and is surprised even more when he allows him to distract him. His lip is still curved into a slow, knowing smile even as he and emerson (mostly emerson) works away at building up the tent.

[break][break] A hand placed on his lower back, Caden leans in. "Good job," he murmurs lowly in the shell of his ear, leaning down towards him.

[break][break] Moonlight shimmers in the distance, glowing with the threats of nightmares or ghosts. Caden is not particularly interested in it. He's interested more in Emerson — but before his hands can sink disastrously lower, his limbs lock up.

[break][break] Something mysteriously grips him, and the sight of blood-red eyes gleam in the shadows.

It’d mostly been an innocent invitation…mostly.[break][break]
A means of taking his mind off a particular person who made his blood boil, but also because he really did need to gather some more research after the last time. And again, Caden seems levelheaded enough to be a good person to have in company.[break][break]
Granted, he’s also proving a distracting companion.[break][break]
Color flares in his face as the other leans low and close, the hand at his back eliciting a shiver. “Uhhh, thanks. Um, not usually very good at all this, er, outdoorsy stuff—“ And there he goes, rambling away as if this were the first time Caden had ever made a move on him before.[break][break]
How embarrassing can he be?[break][break]
But then Em can feel the way that Caden stiffens in place, like petrified stone. He peers up at the dark-haired man, brows furrowing. “What’s up?” It’s only then that he catches the flash of red beyond Caden.[break][break]
His voice drops to a whisper, and Em backs up toward the tent a few steps. “There’s something behind you.”[break][break]

[break][break] It was not a feeling he liked, but had recently become more accustomed to as of late. After the beating endured by THEO BECKETT , and countless other Rocket's after his brother CIAN MAHER 's betrayal, the Rocket Grunt hadn't had a choice in the matter.

[break][break] But this feeling of fear was unlike any of that. No, this was different. This was supernatural.

[break][break] "Emerson —" His voice is in an invisible chokehold around his throat, forced into petrified stone by some unforeseen force. "What the hell is —"

[break][break] He glanced to the side, where the other spoke of, and sure enough. He saw it. Something.

[break][break] Shadows that pooled from the ground, crawling up into existence. Dread sank into his bones.

Panic races through his system as his stare remains locked onto Caden. “W-what do we do?” Otherworldly energy curls around them. Reaching out through the mist with oppressive force.[break][break]
Ghost. Is it another ghost? This feels wholly different from what he’d experienced at the waterfall, though. “Wait–” That was it![break][break]
“I think I have something.” He pats his pockets, but the cleanse tag isn’t there. “J…just stay right there! I promise I’ll be right back!”[break][break]
The tent is right behind them, so it must be there in his bag–on top of the clothes haphazardly shoved in the main pouch. But when Em turns around, he finds himself swallowed by the mist. “Wha-?” He hadn’t moved that far…had he?[break][break]
“Caden?” he squeaks out, eyes locking on the pale red glow of another set of eyes. Though he has no idea that it’s the observation of an impartial marshadow, spectating.

[break][break] His words, his plea, goes unanswered as the red locks of emerson whitlock disappears into the mist. His stomach twists, reminded that this isn't the first time that someone has left him.

[break][break] "It's not like I can fucking go anywhere!" he grinds his teeth, locking his jaw.

[break][break] 'No. Fuck this. Fuck Cian. Fuck - '

[break][break] He isn't going to be scared, he isn't, but he hates how much his body trembles. How he can't move against the shadows lurking towards them both, and the fact that he can't fucking move doesn't make it any better.

[break][break] Gritting his teeth, Caden fights gets the mounting FEAR that paralyzes himself into place. His muscles tense with the effort of it, teeth grinding like gravel, before he finally is able to kick his bag on the floor. A pokeball rolls from it, releasing his Musharna.

[break][break] "Scare them off!"

[break][break] The Musharna blinks owlishly at him before floating into the air, body sparking with MOONLIGHT that bleeds through the horizon, hopefully cutting through the smog and cloud in a beacon of light to ward off the lurking spirits.

He’s made it back to camp somehow, stumbling his way through the mist. Emerson knows it, because he abruptly trips over something and goes crashing to the ground. “Ow..” he mutters pathetically, knees stinging. But it was his bag. [break][break]
His heart thuds as he scrambles to unzip the pouch and there it is—right on top, as he’d thought. Clutching the tag, he frets over how to get back to Caden with all of this mist when he notices those red eyes again. He stares back, and soon the marshadow drifts into sight. “Show me the way back.”[break][break]
He doesn’t know who he is to make demands like this, but for some reason, it obliges.[break][break]
The sudden glow of the attack from caden maher’s musharna helps, and he darts forward, feet thudding against the gravel as he follows the remnants of glowing MOONLIGHT. The marshadow drifts to the side, expectant eyes continuing to assess Emerson silently.[break][break]
Out of shape as he is, his breathing is winded and face flushed by the time he nearly collides with Caden again, but now he’s triumphantly holding the CLEANSE TAG aloft.
“See! Told you I’d be right back!” He holds it out, and pulls his dedenne’s pokeball free of his pocket. “Light this up for me!” Lightning should have the same effect as fire, right? The static of Dumpling’s PARABOLIC CHARGE flares to life and singes the tag.[break][break]
With luck, it should free Caden from that supernatural bind holding him in place. Still out of breath, Em plops to his knees as he watches the result, mouth hanging open.

[break][break] Surrounded by ghosts no less. Caden didn't ordinarily consider himself a scaredy-cat. As kids, that title was better left to CIAN MAHER . (Or, at least, that was what Caden would tell himself to make him feel better.) But there was something unsettling about being paralyzed and stuck in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but creepy ghosts to keep you company.

[break][break] Would his soul stay here if he died like this? Would his body?

[break][break] ... Where the hell was emerson whitlock ?

[break][break] Almost as if his irritable thought conjured the other boy into existence, they appeared. A flash of red hair and a brilliant white light that had him flinching backwards.

[break][break] "Fuck," he hissed, throwing a hand in front of his face. "Watch it! You're going to blind - "

[break][break] He blinked, staring at the back of his hand.

[break][break] He could move!

[break][break] Irritation all but forgotten, Caden ripped away from his spot on the ground and hastily grabbed their backpacks. He barreled towards emerson whitlock , reaching to grab the other boy up by the elbow. (Why the hell was he so calm? Why the hell was he so ... okay with whatever this was?)

[break][break] "Let's go," he urged, hating the way he felt out of breath. "I'm fucking done with these ghosts."

[break][break] So much for a sexy night in a tent. Hell no, he wanted back in his bed.

Luckily, this isn't the case.[break][break]
Caden tears into movement (and Emerson definitely doesn't blame him for that.) Suddenly, he's being yanked forward by the arm, and the little redhead lets out a yelp at the almost painful, panicked tug as he stumbles over his feet.[break][break]
"Wait, wait, slow up!" he whines, reaching to grab his own back from the other. He wanted to make a joke about their bad idea, but it felt like that might go over badly.[break][break]
Em looks back over his shoulder to see the marshadow dutifully following - but he'll deal with the new addition once they get back to the rift.[break][break]
"I'm sorry." They repeat it, voice pitiful. Quiet, and a little guilty.[break][break]
