Eva is pleasantly surprised to hear his answer. In a way, she expected something cynical and dark, “That sounds nice,” she muses out loud, letting subtle memories of their vacation to Alola infiltrate her mind. There’s a hint of mourning that tickles her stomach, both for what once was and what will never be.[break][break]

It’s Eva’s turn to thread carefully although she knows Matias wouldn’t be easily offended. Still, no need to fan the flames of the HEARTH unnecessarily. She keeps with the casual tone of the conversation, letting a bit of gentle teasing drift into her voice, “No offense, Matias, but your work really isn’t rocket science.” Quite literally.[break][break]

It wasn’t like Matias needed help battling. He’s one of the strongest in the region and Eva couldn’t see him taking Fernando’s advice kindly, anyway.[break][break]

“I’ve been pretty swamped with work. After Priam I…” she cleared her throat, sipping the tequila to untie the knot, “I didn’t have assistants. I didn’t trust anyone so I took it all upon myself. I needed help,” and he was there for her. Whatever she needed.

Eva holds back her laugh until he chuckles. She shakes her head gently, erasing the brief picture of Matias in a lab coat carefully sorting samples from her mind. Ridiculous, “Sorry, but, I don’t think you’d make a good lab assistant. Your brother was much better suited for the job. Very good at it too. I think you would have found it boring.” Eva wouldn’t subject him to such torture. [break][break]

“Oh?” her brow raises at the mention of Priam. Intrigued and obviously still invested in the young man’s well-being, “He was always a good guy,” her tone leads with a somber note, “That’s why it was all so hard to believe,” her lips part slightly to ask another question but zip back shut. Knowing the way Matias fights, she probably doesn’t want to know the outcome of the battle.

Classic Matias, the man who doesn’t know what he wants - because he wants everything. She exhales sharply out of her nose, exhausted by the notion but never willing to erect stable boundaries. Her gaze finds the almost empty glass, and she quickly shoots back the remainder of it, “If you want to spend more time with me, you can just ask,” she lifts her empty glass to rattle it playfully, reminding him they are spending time together now, however brief it may be. Her fingers push the empty glass towards the back of the bar, eyes narrowing suspiciously on him, “You let him get away? That doesn’t sound like you.”

Eva recognizes the vulnerability, accepts it, and is gentle and tender in the way she smiles back at him in appreciation. She treads carefully on delicate ground. [break][break]

She gently squeezes his hand when it finds hers. It’s a fleeting touch, because she raises it to gently rest on his cheek. Every fiber in her being tenses, flashes of uncertainty ripple across the surface before dissipating like waves crashing on the beach. Her mended heart smothers her desires. [break][break]

“You know I’ll always be there for you, Matias. But I don’t think I can give you what it is you’re looking for.”[break][break]

Her hand falls back to her side and her body language shifts into a more defensive gesture, withdrawing to create more space. For once, she chooses to be selfish and protect her own well-being rather than give every last drop of herself to someone else until she’s left with nothing.

“Comfort in something familiar,” she says without missing a beat. At least, that’s what it looks like to her. What else could he possibly mean when he said he missed her? The way she makes him feel? By reaching for her? Those are memories he’s trying to recreate and he would only be disappointed in the results. She’s saving him from that disappointment.[break][break]

And if he did find comfort, what then? Cast her aside until the bitter cold drives him back?[break][break]
