Above them is empty sky. Below is hell. Rocket and League alike battle for air supremacy. Whoever rules the sky will have a distinct advantage in the ground battle below.[break][break]
Sheriff Navidson’s been drafted. They’ll get the door open down below soon enough. For now, he’s here, doing what he does best. His Roaring Moon has been trained well. It delivers breaking swipes along the chests of birds, taking care to not cripple their wings. Grunts are sent tumbling to the ground below, but he imagines many of them will live.[break][break]
Across the sky, he locks eyes with a new target. Maybe he’ll get to have a proper dog fight.[break][break]
“C’mon, Smaug. Let’s show ‘em what we’ve got.”[break][break]

beneath him, marcus' noivern shivers with anticipation as a fresh waft of blood hits its nose. [break][break] Michael Navidson , riding one of hoenn's many anomalies, is easy to pick out. from a distance, marcus watches the way he takes out rockets with care, striking their mounts so they fall but don't break themselves against the ocean below. [break][break]how interesting. [break][break]a pat between the shoulder blades is all his noivern needs to act. the dragon gives navy none of the quarter he extends towards rocket, launching a dragon pulse that drives to take out one of roaring moon's wings.[break][break]

The pulse is met by a neck-cracking dive. Were Navy wearing his normal clothes, the force of the sudden downward spiral would be enough to take his head clean off. Gripping into the saddle for dear life, he watches as the pulse splits a nearby ranger’s pidgeot in two. Before he can so much as offer the man a hand, he’s tumbling down. Already gone.[break][break]
“Back up, Smaug.” He orders, the dragon dancing up through the air and trying to close the gap between them. Climbing is harder than falling. Swaying side to side, the macabre dragon dance tries to paint a harder target for the rider.

the roaring moon dips its nose and plummets, letting the dragon pulse whiz by and rend a pidgeot in half. twenty years of rocket business leaves marcus indifferent to the sight of the ranger dropping through the sky, but his gaze still tracks their descent until Michael Navidson begins to climb back to his altitude.

"keep away from them," he warns his noivern in a low voice. "hurricane."
[break][break]
violent winds are whipped up with a flap of the dragon's wings, a nuisance obstacle for the gym leader to overcome. as the hurricane spins in his general direction, noivern turns and flies in the opposite direction. [break][break]

“Come on, Smaug.” It would take an absolute madman to charge a hurricane. It just so happens that both the sheriff and the dragon he rides are quite mad. The dragon lowers his head. Navy leans in, close as he can get. His feet dig into the reins, bringing himself as close to the dragon as he can get.[break][break]
Smaug charges through with an iron head. The tempest tosses him. His trajectory is thrown, but his rider remains in the saddle. In that, there is a victory. Their foe has gained distance. Beating his great wings, he charges forward across the sky.[break][break]
Death and chaos reign all around them. The two are playing an exceptionally dangerous game of cat and mouse. Whoever loses plunges to their doom.[break][break]
Frightening as it is, Navy rides an adrenaline high second to none.

marcus looks back and catches a glimpse of Michael Navidson plunging through the hurricane and coming out on the other side. the dogged pursuit is impressive, but he doesn't intend to let him reap the rewards of it. long distance attacks are easier to manage than teeth and claws.

This game of meowth and rattata is going to be long. That he remains in the saddle of a miracle. Navy’s seen Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki ride the winds upon her own Noivern. They’re deadly mounts, good at keeping range.[break][break]
“Smaug, try to breathe fire. Launch a scale. Something. Anything.” He begs his Roaring Moon. Somehow, the dragon hears him over the wind. When the Noivern banks to the left, he follows. Even with the impressive wings his dragon has, his own turn is nowhere near as graceful.[break][break]
Scales trail after them. Navy has his style, and it does not involve long-range combat. Without proper training, the attempts at a scale shot go wide.[break][break]
“Covering fire, at least.” He murmurs, urging the dragon on.

marcus hears the scale shot whistle by, but chaos does not erupt — the beast missed. [break][break]his noivern hisses at the ugly sound and twists its body towards the challenge, wings snapping harshly against the air as it turns back toward the roaring moon. marcus feels his mouth go dry as the dragon-type resists his urgency to continue forward.

the invitation to rush them is written plainly in the way noivern hovers in place. rather than tooth and claw, a boomburst awaits them if they come close.

When he draws in close, he’s hit by the wave of pure sound. Helping Tsubaki raise her own Noivern roused him to the possibility of such a thing, but reality catches him off guard. The mighty blast of noise throws him back. Navy can’t hear anything. His ears are ringing. A trail of blood seeps from his ears.[break][break]
Arceus does it ever hurt. Smaug is undeterred. Navy doesn’t need to be told his mount is in pain. He feels it in the tightening of his muscles, the wide-eyed frantic need to reassert control. Dragons are prideful beasts, and that attack wounded his pride something fierce. With might only a dragon could muster, he endures. His breaking swipe aims to take the Noivern across the chest as he finally draws in close.

fuck.[break][break] a final, panicked thought as the breaking swipe connects with his noivern's chest. the dragon screeches as blood begins to bead along the slashes cut across leather skin, blemishing the white fur collared around its neck. [break][break]like the other rockets Michael Navidson has dealt with up in the skies, his noivern begins to drop. marcus holds white-knuckled onto his mount as wind whistles around them both. [break][break]"fly!" [break][break]he barks out the command. beneath them, the island they're staking claim over yawns, ready to take him to his end — [break][break]with a sudden, nauseating lurch, his noivern rouses with a lithe twist of its body and snaps its wings open, catching the air.[break][break]several hard flaps of its wings help it gain altitude. head craned upward, it opens its mouth and fires another defiant dragon pulse in the roaring moon's direction. [break][break]

There is no place for compassion on the battlefield. Navy can’t remember who told him that, but the thought sticks in his mind, right in the front. Ever the bleeding heart, he ignores that sound advice. When he sees the trickle of blood and watches the Noivern fall, he thinks the battle is over. Even a mighty Pokemon can be felled by a single well-placed blow.[break][break]
Smaug rolls its eyes when he realizes what his rider urges him to do. Dipping his wings, the dragon cuts down and begins to descend. The distance between the two riders shrinks again, but this time without any ill-intent. Going for another pokeball, he means to throw out a second Pokemon to catch man and mon before they hit the ground.[break][break]
This war isn’t just a war for territory – it’s a war for Hoenn’s soul. Operating under no delusion that the other would do the same for him, Navy prepares to try and rescue him.[break][break]
With a pulse, Noivern signals there is no need for this compassion. Smaug is caught by the blast. Navy’s ears ring. He himself is not spared from the blast. It is his turn to break into a freefall. Smaug desperately tries to beat his wings to slow the fall, but the ground fast approaches.[break][break]
“Shit,” he curses, scrambling anew for the lifeline, “Shit!”
