[break][break] Though the falsified memories covered them like a sheet of fogshine, there were some mementoes that were buried bone-deep.

[break][break] Vodnik sought too, to fill the aching in his own chest, of a family broken.

[break][break] A roar that is loud enough to make the earth rumble cracks through the earth as it leads the Cursed away from the electric field. "No, no —" Fingers dig into scales, but it is useless. Vodnik is filled with a HATRED of his own as he chases the other Roaring Moon with a ferocious BREAKING SWIPE.

[break][break] The Cursed grits his teeth, confused at the change, but even more confused to find that is nowhere in sight. With electricity crackling like firelight behind his violet eyes, they shift into a blistering blue behind his mask. Where is Fern? What happened to them? Did —

For a spell, they leave the battle. Their swift exit through spectral space renders them unaware of what comes after. Of the anger lashes out with, or of Tapu Koko’s actions in their absence. Not that they are particularly worried about either of them (this is not true, of course. They simply do not want to admit to their fretting.) Both man and deity have existed and survived and clawed their way free of battle long before Fern was ever a part.[break][break]

They are simply an accessory to it all now.[break][break]

And so they crawl through that temporal void, waiting for the right moment to reappear on the other end of the PHANTOM FORCE.[break][break]

Tapu Koko, though, grows more irritable in the wake of Fern’s departure and refusal to allow it entrance into that portal alongside them. It takes out its offended mood on the tyrantrum fixed on hunting it. Seizing power from the electric terrain that persists, the island guardian unleashes another pulsing DISCHARGE to stun the beast before spiraling upward in pursuit of Freya. A chase in the air has never bothered it, though it peels away at the sight of The Cursed plummeting forward atop Vodnik.[break][break]

This is not its chosen. No, they appear out of their portal just behind Freya and Melusine, the smack of their surprise attack aimed at the roaring moon’s tail rather than her bulk. An attempt to disrupt her balance in the air. “Okay. Okay, I couldn’t stay away,” they prattle as if they were chiding themself for having an extra cookie during afternoon tea. “This is just too much fun.”

a beloved monstrosity descends upon them. claws imbued with horrible light rake across melusine's side, dampening her already dwindling fire. she snarls a vicious hiss and freya starts, scrabbling for purchase on slick scales as the dragon darts away. the thrumming in her throat is off-kilter and she's making noises that make sense, but that are pulling at freya's stained memories. 

melusine's growls are familial and carry an anger of betrayal. 

that splintered voice does not muster a question seeking answers. cold washes over them, nettling her skin. her lips thin, turning blue. eyes narrow to slits. melusine dances around the worst of the frost, stoking dragonfire to bolster herself. 

below them, freya watches in dismay as her tyrantrum is stunned. electricity sizzles down killian's sides. a silver sheen glitters over her scales, winking in and out faster than a blink, and freya snarls an order to melusine.

the roaring moon's wings flare, drawing them into as tight a curve as they can manage, but the hard bank is interrupted by a blow to her hind leg. melusine snaps her tail and plummets and freya makes herself as small as she can against the dragon's back. 

pointed stones beckon at her call when she strikes the ground, seeking to rid them of their pest.

They do not know words. They are not human. Yet they are not quite animal either — the sounds of siblings broken are unleashed in a clatter of growls and snarls, swiping down with darkened sunbeams.

[break][break] Just like his trainer, Vodnik - too - is searching. For a thing that he does not know.

[break][break] Driven on pure instinct, the Roaring Moon's jaws snap viciously as a shark's as he chases after it's matching brethren. An IRON HEAD makes power glow around his skull in attempt to bash the other into remembrance.

[break][break] YOU LEFT.

[break][break] Chasing around the glow of frost, the Cursed is felled to his flying mount. His fingers dig into cold scales as they chase through the cold fog, breathing in INTERDREAM MIST. Memories claw at the surface, feelings of hopelessness and burden rise in his chest.

[break][break] The world they know around them is gone. Everything falls apart when they do. He wears a crown upon his head, one that feels foreign. But it's Circhester-Circhester-Circhester.

[break][break] Sudden, blinding pain strikes him and Jayden crumples against his dragon's back as they descend just beneath the spark of electricity. His heart thuds like ocean in his ears.

[break][break] Racing through pointed stones rake pain across his body, and behind his eyes burn a split-second memory.

[break][break] 'Auntie Freya!'

[break][break] 'Are you gonna teach us how to ride a dragon?'

[break][break]

[break] 'Okay. Okay, I couldn’t stay away.'

[break][break] Just like that, he's pulled out of the fog. Sharply, like he's gasping for air. Desperately, Jayden's eyes seek for . Their voice is like a lullaby, a sweet song that makes his chest ache with familiarity. Make him ground into reality.

[break][break] But instead of finding them, both dragon and man crash into the pit of stone, pain streaking through them both as a caterwaul erupts. An AROMATIC MIST from his Polteageist slips in a panic towards him, in a last-ditch effort to try to cure the hurt away.

[break][break] It works, except for one thing.

[break][break] Leaving them vulnerable to attack.

in another time, he was a king. 

they were friends. they understood each other, in a way. quiet, reserved that they were, not fretting about the past, only wanting a future. their future. stolen from them. they'd steal it back.

aoife had reminded her of delta.

snow falls around them. freya blinks and it's dust and debris, swathed in healing light. she doesn't know if the others' body lay broken beside them; she only looks up, past the fog, witnessing the monarch in all his twisted, hateful glory.

reinforcements emerge from the woods, drawn by the blood-curdling cries of the draconid. two salamence fly overhead, breathing fire to let their mistress' know they're there. they avoid the electric sand. killian's form is motionless on the ground. 

we left that wretched place.

melusine shakes the earth. pointed stones blast from the ground and into the air.

in another life, she was a queen.

[break][break] royalty had never had a place in jayden's life in their current reality. sure, of course, he knew of royalty like and but as evidenced by both their betrayals, neither could be trusted. jayden had never cared much for politics. at least, he had thought.

[break][break] and then they had been taken to that faraway place, where dreams had spun into reality. a place so alike the tangled woods that he had grown up and yet so entirely different.

[break][break] where responsibility had been thrust upon him. expectation had been thrust upon him.

[break][break] jayden lay in that pile of broken granite, watching as porcelain glass splintered into foggy shapes and fell around him. he should have been more sad about the disappearance of his poltergeist, who sacrificed it's life for his aid.

[break][break] but in that moment, he could not feel it.

[break][break] as the ice catalyzed around him, his body felt numb. the aching in his chest, the emptiness that he'd felt at the loss of chien pao, at the loss of ... all of it, in that moment, seemed to freeze before him as violet amethyst met gold-flaked eyes among the fallen snow.

When she is pulled from the sky, they are pulled with her. The snap of the Roaring Moon’s tail catches their dragapult as she shrieks warning. It happens too suddenly to prevent the spin out, and as they collide with the earth, they decide that perhaps hubris has finally caught up with them.[break][break]

They should remember her from another life too, maybe. But they don’t. Their only thought is of the sky pillar. The shared fondness of its occupants and the austere ancientness of it all. They have that at least, in the ebb and flow of their consciousness before what is left fixates on Jayden as heavy shards of stone pull him down with them. Their mask, cracked from the fall, is pulled free and tossed away carelessly.[break][break]
