“Do you ever want to go back? Like, permanently?” He doesn’t turn a hopeful glance on Ollie, just one of simple curiosity. It’s not that he himself wishes to leave Hoenn.[break][break]
But he does wonder if he’s not the only one who indulges his sense of homesickness with the thought from time to time.[break][break]
It would go far, he thinks, if he isn’t.[break][break]
If someone he considers a friend gets it.[break][break]
Like, really gets it.[break][break]
Pressure is something that easily weighs on his shoulders. He had thought that rising to the position of gym leader would be enough. But of course it isn’t. As soon as he did, there were mentions of moving up, doing more.[break][break]
So what is enough, really?[break][break]
A rueful smile flits across his mouth as Ollie reassures him. He leans with the nudge, and opens his mouth to counter—but then noise erupts nearby, and their brief reprieve from the skirmishing comes to an abrupt end.[break][break]
He only gives one short look at the head ranger before Lam takes off after the intruders. “Noodle!” he calls for the shinx, who darts ahead, electricity from the feline’s WILD CHARGE aiming to stun some of the Rockets.

[break][break] whatever ollie had been about to say, whether it be as deep and meaningful or careless and simplistic as he could make it, was cut off at the sudden sound of shots being fired.

[break][break] shouts of alarm echo in the distance as the rockets get attacked by both ollie and lam. electricity swells around the group as noodle goes first, followed by ollie's pokemon.

[break][break] "reeses, electrocute the ground!"

[break][break] an ELECTRIC TERRAIN sparks along the floor just as the iron thorns comes into view. ollie's quick to dispatch his WATCHOG too. "help get the civs to safety!" the watchog darts expertly along the rocks, avoiding the electricity sparking along her paws.

[break][break] little does she notice one of the rockets has a nasty EARTHQUAKE that splits the ground, aiming straight for her.

Whatever Ollie had been about to say is lost. The no he led with is likely enough for Lam to put two and two together.[break][break]
And really, he wouldn’t permanently leave either. He’s built a life here. He couldn’t go anywhere that Ikarus Rook wasn’t. Not even Alola.[break][break]
But it’s a conversation lost to urgency, and left to another time.[break][break]
Empowered by the Iron Thorns’ ELECTRIC TERRAIN, Noodle continues to circle the group of intruding Rockets at a distance. Keeping his space as he unleashes a DISCHARGE of more crackling electricity to keep them from advancing any further.[break][break]
Of the same mind, Lam releases one of his birds to assist in ensuring the safety of any uninvolved parties. “Go back her up!” He instructs the toucannon, who honks in acknowledgement before taking off after the watchog.[break][break]
In the air, unbothered by the EARTHQUAKE that ripples out toward the pair of pokemon on a mission, Loquat picks up sweep, wings flapping to draw him lower. His clawed feet outstretch in the attempt to snag the watchog by the scruff before the earth swallows her up.

his gaze is sharp, when the ground rumbles something fierce and the earthquake creates a fissure in the ground.

[break][break] "pepper..!" his warning is cut off though, with emerald eyes as wide as saucers, as he watches his watchog get swallowed up by the crater. not even lam logan's toucannon is fast enough to save her.

[break][break] for a minute, time slows to a stop. ollie is brought back onto the cliff months ago, where he'd already lost —

[break][break] no! he wasn't going to give up. he wasn't going to be pathetic here.

[break][break] not when he had lam logan counting on him.

[break][break] "reeses!" he shouts, voice taking on a rough edge. "rock tomb!"

[break][break] the iron thorns lets out a roar of defiance, before it's body is swallowed by hot-whtie energy. it's claws raise to the sky, just as a ROCK TOMB pierces the ground where they stand, crushing their opponent's numels under the weight of the attack.

He winces when the earth swallows the watchog up. Loquat has to swerve upward as his talons fail to snatch the other pokemon. And he carries forward to begin corralling the nearby civs alone.[break][break]
Lam glances Ollie’s way, and he catches the look of distress there before it’s covered up by determination. Lam lets out a breath and refocuses just the same.[break][break]
The abruptness of it reminds him of his own loss in the deep sea, though this is far less brutal. It’s not much of a comfort, though, is it?[break][break]
Shaking his head, he calls for Noodle to come back before Ollie’s Iron Thorns brings down the ROCK TOMB on their opponents. It is swift and decisive, and maybe an end to the conflict before it can really be worse. “Catch ‘em, Noodle!” The shinx works on the actual assailants as Reeses thwarts their pokemon. The shinx zips around the grunts in a wide, herding circle. Pulses of SHOCK WAVE keeping them in place from breaking away.[break][break]
“I’m gonna head over there!” he calls out to Ollie as he starts out at a jog, nodding to where his toucannon had headed. He’ll just have to pick his way around the broken earth.

it works. by some miracle, it works.

[break][break] reeses manages to pierce their opponents pokemon, just as lam logan's shinx paralyzes the assailants with electricity. something bitter sets on ollie's tongue at the sight of it; of the people who just killed pepper.

[break][break] there's no time to hesitate, though. he reaches for his comm device, calling for reinforcements to take them away.

[break][break] with a flash of his wrist, he returns reeses to his pokeball before the wild beast can do any more damage. in it's place he releases his tropius. the pokemon's SWEET SCENT is enough to stun the rockets into silence, just as lam logan helps the civilians get to safety.

[break][break] after several moments, when the rockets are set away by incoming league officers, ollie turns.

[break][break] "hey, lam! everything good?"

[break][break] in his arms is his dead watchog, limp in his arms.

On the other end, Lam is doing the same—he speaks quickly into his own comm, alerting another base to the incoming arrival of others who have been uprooted by the abrupt attack here.[break][break]
Lam is ushering the last of the group away, with his toucannon ready to caw out a BOOMBURST should the rockets try anything else, when Ollie catches up with them. “Yeah! All good, I think that’s everyone.”[break][break]
He puffs out a relieved breath, but his face quickly falls as his eyes land on the watchog that Ollie is holding.[break][break]
Swallowing dryly, he takes in her limp body, broken from the fall. “I’m sorry, man.” It feels like a pathetic, lousy consolation. But what else can he really say?[break][break]
He just expects it to keep happening the longer all of this goes on.[break][break]
Noodle catches up with them, and the little shinx blinks up at the head ranger. He must be able to sense what has happened because he weaves in between Ollie’s ankles, butting his head against Lam’s friend with little, comforting chirps.

[break][break] the apology feels empty. by now, ollie knows that pokemon death - or perhaps simply death in general - is just an outcome of war. it reminds him of that day that he spent with Melody Miro on mt. pyre, crying over the loss of his staraptor, hands full of soot and ash. ollie knows it all and yet, it doesn't make it feel any less bitter.

The apology is one that feels hollow in its inflection. It’s earnest, of course it is, but I’m sorry feels so commonplace in a setting like this one. It prompts a restless, agitated turn in Lam’s stomach. He hates this. The fact that they even have to go through any of this at all.[break][break]
But his grievances are the last thing Ollie needs right now.[break][break]
His hand lifts to settle on Ollie’s shoulder. His smile is a weak one, but no less genuine. “Yeah, of course I’ll help.”[break][break]
The toucannon flutters back toward them, and Lam recalls Loquat to rest for the time being before he turns back toward the head ranger. “Let’s go find a nice, quiet spot for her.”[break][break]
It’s what the poor thing deserves, after all. A quiet place to rest.
