Unlike the rounds he'd done previously, with larger cargo crates packed with supplies, these were for a small group based out near one of the cave mouths further from the rest. A last stock up before they attempted to scout further.[break][break]

It also wouldn't hurt if he could grab some extra full heals for himself while he was here.

Lam grins as he returns the fist bump, knuckles rapping softly against Ollie’s. A familiar face is a sight for sore eyes when you’re stuck in an endless loop of skirmishes and supply runs.[break][break]
“Glad to help—I definitely don’t mind making the runs." He follows after the head ranger, scanning the perimeter as they make their way toward the base. “About as well as it can be, I guess. Haven’t run into anything too weird yet. You think you’ll head out there at all?”[break][break]
For the most part, he’s only dealt with low level Rockets. No one severe who’s busted his chops.[break][break]
“Oh, hella.” Taking the offered munitions, he swings his personal knapsack around to stow them away for later. “Thanks, man.”[break][break]
His shinx, settled by his feet, sniffs the air cautiously. Illuminated fur glowing soft in the low light. “Kinda quiet out here, isn’t it?”[break][break]

[break][break] he glanced over at the beach. though he was sure that Navy had handled the big details, ollie had promised his friend that he'd make sure the rangers secured the areas where the local government couldn't. since rangers were used to the uneven terrain, it'd make it easier to fight along the beaches and secure resources on the seas.

[break][break] "but i'm 'stache and i will take to the skies eventually." after all, his dragonite couldn't really be in one place for too long. he'd get impatient.

Lam nods in response, eyes following that same like of beach. “Mhm, I getcha. Better to be secure out here first.” Better to have a stable center point to retreat to between skirmishing.[break][break]
Noodle eagerly pounces upon the treat, crunching at it happily as his tail swishes. “You’re gonna have a friend for life now,” Lam remarks with a laugh before glancing back in Ollie’s direction.[break][break]
“Yeah, it is. Though also a bit..” his head tilts, brows pinching together in thought, “ominous, maybe?”[break][break]
But maybe that’s just the feeling of being on edge. The lingering remnants of the events Ollie draws comparison to. “Wayyyy better. At least there’s more light out here.”[break][break]
He doesn’t feel nearly as cornered and trapped as he did throughout most of his time in the deep sea that day, no matter how expansive that place has turned out to be.

[break][break] a laugh breaks the silence as they walk a bit closer towards the entreatment camp. it's still a bit aways, though.

[break][break] but for all his bravado, ollie knows that dewford's towns shores are preferable to whatever nightmare scenarios those caves could conjure. perhaps that's why he's been procrastinating going to the frontlines, knowing that he could've just run in there if he wanted to. but maybe those things were better left to Laurence Anderson or Raziel Beckett. they were avatars, after all.

He waves off the drama. “Oh, fine fine. You got me, you already qualify.” His smile soon wanes though as they walk forward.[break][break]
A furtive hum escapes him, despite the other’s obvious teasing. The ghost of a shiver creeps up his spine at the recollection of a memory that he does his best to keep from mind, though it’s never far out of reach.[break][break]
“No, not the dark. What’s in it.” He doesn’t speak angrily, or in a show of frustration toward the ranger. The short, frank response is only a reaction to the feelings that creep up and threaten to swallow him again.[break][break]
Not something he’s keen on after working so hard to circumnavigate them for the sake of helping again. Now.[break][break]
So Lam does as he does best—let’s the negativity roll off of his shoulders, even if the anxiety itself is never completely gone.
And honestly, Ollie helps matters with his complete swerve in subject. Lam pauses, side eyeing him with obvious confusion— “Uh…avatar?” A sputtering laugh follows, “Not really, no. It’s sort of wild to me. Like, comic book shit.”[break][break]
And he’s just a guy. Granted, most superhero comics start that way for all of them, but still. He’s an actual ‘just a guy.’

The shift in discussion is more appreciated than Ollie likely knows. Lam doesn’t make a fuss about it, but dwelling on what happened out in the deep sea is a surefire way to get himself all in his head about today.[break][break]

“Right, the big meetings.” He mimes zipping his mouth shut, but grins after a moment with a shake of his head. Of course those are under wraps. He’s not put out by the code of silence, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still intrigued.[break][break]
“Nah, me either,” he shrugs. “Like, it’s one thing to hang out with tapu koko, ‘cause it’s, y’know, already tied to the league.”[break][break]
But something that just shows up? That’s buckwild. “But I dunno, seems like there’d be a reason for it, or something.” Fate? Maybe that’s too ambiguous. Or fanciful.

"what makes you think i didn't?" his eyes are bright, amused, but the day that he'd found out about Eva Morales's avatarship nearly felt like the world was crashing around him again, the same way he'd felt when he'd seen her on that tv screen. whatever big and special future Eva Morales had coming, she was always - first and foremost - his little sister.

Lam laughs, nose wrinkling. “Okay fair— did you?” He probably would have, if it were him.[break][break]

Despite the implication it might’ve had, Lam didn’t visit Tapu Koko with great frequency as it might’ve been thought. At least not at present. It’s a connection to his home, and a highly respected one at that. But in this context, just an example.[break][break]

“Yeah. I know exactly what you mean.” He nods in agreement, and right then it’s a relief to know that someone else gets it. That it would be understood if he tried to explain that he’s just Lam.[break][break]

He appreciates his friendships with those in the League, but it all feels so over his head. Vast and daunting, and way too big for him. The fear that he doesn’t measure up to all this supposed potential he’s been told he has creeps up with more insistence.[break][break]

It looms over his shoulder, waiting for him to fuck up again like he did in the deep sea. Over and over.[break][break]

Part of him had been worried that Ollie was going to broach the subject of avatars with a similar premise to other conversations he’s had in the last few weeks.[break][break]

But right now, he can’t really explain how grateful he is that that’s not the case. For a moment, Lam can breathe again. “Everything feels sort of big in this region, really.”

A short bark of laughter meets the question, dry but amused. His head tips back to look up through the foliage to scan the open sky.[break][break]

“You make that choice sound easy as breathing.”[break][break]

It’s moments like this that reminds Lam how homesick he is at times. Sure, he’s building a new home and life, but that doesn’t mean it’s always so easy to reconcile.[break][break]

And the pressure is high. Higher than he’d assumed it would be for someone who just wanted to help educate in battle tactics.[break][break]

…for the gym challenge. Not actual warfare.[break][break]

“It'd be a lie to say I didn’t think about it a little wistfully sometimes. I miss Alola a lot,” he cracks a somewhat sheepish grin as he cops to it.[break][break]

His shinx chirps up at him as if sensing his unease and Lam stoops to pick up the little cat. “But I’ve made a life here, and I just want to be useful.” It’s not about glory or honor or prestige. He cares about his friends, loves Lilycove and what he’s built with his partner there. He wouldn’t forgive himself if something happened to Ikarus Rook because he was useless to help.[break][break]
