kyle didn't stand out much during his childhood. despite this, all those that know of him spoke highly of him even before his ascension to the throne.

"oi," he shouts back in jest to the chanting, "shut up!"

he chuckles. this is the type of cheering he's used to: playground jeering and trash talk rather than the big stadiums that the pokemon league offers him.

kyle grabs navy by his hand, followed with a tap of his foot on the navidson living room flooring.

"i'm skipping this boss. call it a speed run strat."

sacred sword slices the entire room up: from the furniture, to the appliances, and finally, the room itself. the floor breaks beneath them. kyle recalls his terrakion as the figure of navy's father disappear above during their freefall.

a salute from him was the final message he gives to his fans before both him and navy drop down into the void.

a cushion of grass break their fall. verdanturf park was their destination. it's where kyle spent most of his childhood after he got adopted, and when contact between them got limited.

The boy clings to his friend as they enter a freefall. Screaming bloody murder, his chest feels piping hot against Kyle. Flesh begins to knit. Whether reflection or real, the marks left indicates there will be a nasty scar – the second in his gallery.[break][break]
When he lands, he looks about curiously. A whoosh of air is there above them. Michael watches the sky nervously, as if he expects the great monster will fall upon them any second.[break][break]
“I missed you after you left, you know.” The kid says. “…a lot.” He squeezes Kyle’s hand, looking around the park. “What do you do for fun? Play weird video games where you date girls?”

the rural countryside of verdanturf greatly contrasts itself from the urban streets of slateport, but the setting doesn't necessarily affect anything else.

what did he do?

"school," he answers, uncertain with the recollection of his own childhood, "but you're not entirely wrong."

the wind whistles. no other voices can be heard in the background.

"do you want to visit my home?" he asks. navy had been there in real life, though the apartment he probably was more aware of the one he owned at slateport. "have you been there before?"

at this age and point in time, he probably hasn't.

a spotlight from the sky shines down on a large enough suburban home, with a dirt path straight to it emerging from the ground. no dogs would be barking by this area, as verdanturf was a ghost town for kyle at some point of his life.

With your new family, I mean.” It’s an innocent question, and he seems to grow in real time as the question is asked. No longer a mere child, he’s a teenager now. Navy’s teenage years are a far cry from heroic. Somewhere along the way, he fell in with a bad crowd. A pierced eyebrow, dark clothes, and a bad slouch mark him as a 14 year old’s idea of a rebel.[break][break]
“Wonder if you’ve got anything to eat in there. I haven’t been home for a while.” Given what Kyle had seen earlier, any fool could guess why. Running the roads is preferable to a night in Joshua Navidson’s company.[break][break]

"not really."

he enters their home and finds it furnished much like he remembered his home was as a child. it's too neat, and too proper. one wouldn't expect a young boy in his adolescence to be living here.

light from the outside filters through the windows, providing the only source of illumination in the house. walking by the dining table, he finds a note. it's the usual excuse of his adoptive parents going home late.

"there's food in the fridge if you want," he offers. "there's not really much here. did you expect something else?"

the change in navy's appearance is taken note of. he would've been made fun of if he shrunk down to an appropriate age, as he usually wore a uniform of a popular school in verdanturf.

immersing himself in his own memories have made it the case.

“Ooooh…” What he does next is a peek into another universe: one where he was allowed to simply exist, rather than stepping up to the plate for a younger sibling. Navy goes to the fridge, listening to Kyle and piling food up. It’s artistry, how he can fit so much food between two slices of bread. The sandwich sitting on the plate is supermassive, cresting the hill of an event horizon that will send all of the ingredients spilling across the table.[break][break]
“So your parents were always busy, huh? Guess that explains why you never talk about ‘em much. Doesn’t really feel like home.” He speaks between mouthfuls of food, an undignified savage through and through. He’d look like any other punk, were it not for the scorched hole in his shirt. Inside burns an inferno, working to pull the heart back together.[break][break]

"they're good people," he argues, "they're just, uh, made an error in judgement."

family was apparently not that high in their list of priorities. they both valued their careers, and kyle can't fault them since they already dragged him out of the system.

"it's not ideal, but we make do."

eyes wander around the house. the walls were decorated with pictures of him growing up, from the day he first got here, to his football matches, to his graduation, his induction to the force... affection was there, at the very least.

"do you want to play outside after you're done with that snack?" he asks. walking up to the door, he opens it to reveal the actual turning point of his life.

As far as food eaten by a figment of himself in interdream mist goes, it’s great. Whatever god holds sway here affords him good food, if nothing else.[break][break]
Crossing the threshold with Kyle, he’s the person he was the day Slateport attacked. This creature has changed very little between that day and the day he stepped into Galar, at least physically. His hair is blue. His hairstyle is the same. Only his eyes have truly changed. They’re a sleeper’s eyes, forced awake by fear amidst this hellish scene. A train speeds out of Slateport station.[break][break]
“What the hell, man?!” Navy cries. He had this conversation over the phone the first go-around. “Team Rocket, seriously? Thought those guys were just some clowns from Kanto with bad fashion sense. The hell are they doing in our town?!”

a health bar appears on top of their heads along with their names. that's what kyle noticed when he turns to see his friend.

on the other hand, his would read in a more extravagant manner, which goes against his preferences, but with an equally demeaning meaning.

"isn't it obvious?" he answers navy, "the best part is that there's nothing we can do about it."

he can't stop himself for being amused as he looks far away. troops were starting to lay siege to the city with their fully evolved pokemon. opposing them were the likes of him, who doesn't have anything better than a poochyena.

hoenn was peaceful beforehand. there was no need to be strong.

"what would you do in this situation?" he asks this navy. "would you die for others or try to live another day?"

a quick tap on his belongings confirmed what he feared. his pokemon were gone, replaced with the ones he had that day: six barely-trained poochyenas.

When he speaks, it is in two voices, perfectly overlaid with one another. Two voices, one of the past and one of the now.[break][break]

One is spoken with the uncertainty of a man sitting on the sidelines. That man, that mercenary masquerading as a detective, speaks like a man watching a sports show on TV. What stakes he has are personal, tied to him. Beyond that, he trusts in other people. Bailey Cooper and all the other old guard will do right by people. That’s just how he sees it.[break][break]
But beneath that man, a truth then concealed, is an idealist with a burning desire to fight. There’s regret in that man’s voice. Regret that burns his heart. The kindling placed there by Kyle and his connection to Ho-oh flares up. He draws a single pokeball – Ironsides. The one thing connecting his past and his present. He only owned this one Pokemon the day this happened.[break][break]
“We gotta help ‘em, Kyle.” He throws out the bird. His steel armor is molten courtesy of MATIAS SILPH. Beneath the frame, the bird’s skin bubbles and pops. It rolls its eyes, even in death, and flicks a wing to cover for one of the Poochyena.[break][break]
“How did we let this happen?!” A younger man asks.

the skarmory's appearance disturbs him, but he can't bring himself to ask about it. it's one of the weirdness this space by the mist shows them, and the symbolism it pertains can be asked later, if he even remembers by then.

"help them how?" he asks, then turns his gaze to the ground and smiles wistfully. "what would you do in my situation?"

a measly poochyena, who roars away trainer pokemon, only for them to replace them with another, and a dying skarmory, whose sturdy wings, that were once its key features, now failing.

objectively, the best thing to do was to regroup and fight another day when they have a more advantageous position. kyle ran this scenario in his head multiple times when it happened. he was weak, and were easily lambs to the slaughter.

a sigh, and he holds his head up to answer the voice. "i'm not sure. you tell me," he tells the other person.

“We gotta—” A younger man begins. Somewhere along the way, an older voice cuts in. He speaks with confidence that he little possessed when this day truly happened.[break][break]
“see how we’d do.” Ironsides finds it in him to roll his eyes from beyond the grave. A soft sigh escapes the bird’s beak. Instead of questioning his trainer’s order, he flies in front spreading his wings and releasing a mighty shriek. Ghosts of grunts past recoil away in shock. Whether they just see a Skarmory or this grisly sight makes no difference.[break][break]
“I’ve told myself time and time again. The two of us, putting our heads together…we could’ve made a difference.” Even someone who doggedly insists on not seeing life as a story or game can see the writing on the wall: this is a last stand. There is only one objective that could be listed on the screen here. Survive. They have to hold out for as long as they can.[break][break]
These grunts have fully evolved Pokemon. They were ready. Navy and Kyle have the gift of hindsight. There’s only so many avenues of attack. Ironsides spreads spikes across all of them. As his feathers melt, the bird resolves to make them fight for every inch.[break][break]
“Come on. It’ll be fun.”

fun.

it's really the only motivation that works on any iteration of kyle. he supposed it's what tethers him to the world even if the reality all points to everything being meaningless.

it'll be fun.

"how can it be fun when your skarmory's almost dead," he nonchalantly banters back. "but you're right. it's not fun if there's no challenge."

if memory serves, roar belonged to echo, who at this point of time only had moves like yawn or howl. he clicks his tongue as he realizes the mist recognizes his need for excitement to give him a temporary team for this stage of the game.

"let's get them here. howl."

the poochyena sings its song. the soulful howl rises from the noise of fear and panic. he supposed only the lower ranked grunts would answer to their call, as the higher ups have their own objectives.

Ironsides’s Iron Defense buys time for Echo and the other dogs. It’s up to Kyle and them to make the most of it. Ironsides suffers in silence in death as he did in life.

a defensive tank and a backline non-healer support is all they have for this scenario. kyle smiles as a bead of sweat rolls down his temple.

they have to get creative in this scenario, but kyle wasn't omnipotent. he chooses to stall for a bit, figuring that he needs to adjust to being back to zero before he can pick and choose the right choices.

"create a choke point. yawn on our left, echo."

a surprise pops up in front of kyle in form of a translucent screen. he supposed it pays to have his head full of fantasy novels when the interdream zone works on their favor. if they're in an rpg, then skills would be a thing.

as acedia incarnate, your pokemon's sleep-inducing moves are more potent.

pokemon pile up in front of the poochyena as they all drop on the ground, their bodies eventually blocking the small corridor while leaving the skarmory to defend the other.

titles given to them at the start act as pseudo-avatar abilities, if his understanding was accurate. he quickly turns to navy as he successfully slows things down on his end.

"oi. will being a discount detective help us in this case?"
