Two Navys offer two drastically different answers to the question. Their eyes both go to the path left for them to defend. Ironsides spreads stealth rocks and spikes across the path. Each molten feather that falls bursts into flame. Tiny bonfire swords litter the path. Full grown beasts howl in pain as they try to navigate the field.[break][break]

Even if your private eye doubles as a lazy eye, it can sharpen up when it needs to. Your observational skills allow you to predict the pathing of your enemies, increasing hazard damage.

The past grumbles while the present fights. Even in his present state, Ironsides chuckles. Somewhere in his rekindled mind, a thought gives Navy peace: at least this is a proper sendoff.

a chuckle escapes with the comment about his supposed occupation. both comments check out. whatever he says, kyle is aware. he's been a client for the less legal jobs he needed to do while under the law enforcement after all.

he peeks on the screen in front of him and reads the job description. kyle smiles, not for the practical in-game effects, but because of the flavor text that might be more than just a descriptor in this scenario.

"did you know i actually met the rocket boss during this attack?" he tells navy in a livelier-than-normal tone, making small talk.

kyle cocks his head to the opposite path of the traps, where sleeping grunts block the road. he carries his poochyena across, just in case its tiny legs trip up the mountain of bodies.

"can you lead the way to the precinct? we need to arm up before we head to the docks."

kyle doesn't need to explain what was going to happen next.

“What, the one before Walsh?” The past Navy asks, losing ground to the man he will become. The fire in his chest seems to be almost done repairing the damage.[break][break]
“Sure thing, I’ll get us through the minefield.” And so he does, the molten Skarmory soaring overhead. Occasionally, the bird coughs, nudging Navy an inch or two over. It saves them from some scratches. Once, Navy nearly steps on a spike. He really does miss the things in front of him.[break][break]
“Wanting me to lead you to your place of employment, huh Lopez? Sure.” They get there. They find what they need. Everything they need…[break][break]
And when they emerge, Navy’s wearing sunglasses. Cocking a shotgun, he gets the attention of some passing grunts. He’s got pistols at his side, a rifle on his back. Discount Detective? More like Cop of the Apocalypse.[break][break]
“I am here,” the sheriff declares, “to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I’m all outta bubblegum.” The grunts look at him, confused. Turning to Kyle, scoffs.[break][break]
“Grunts these days got no class. No style.”

stocking up before the big fight reminds him of his first trip to ultra space. he wonders if thinking about it for a brief moment would change the outcome of the scenario the dream has placed them on.

"there's gum on my desk's drawer somewhere inside. it should have my name on it," he tells navy as he steps out. "oh, wait. you were trying to sound cool. my bad."

similar sunglasses adorn his eyes, though what differs him from navy is the full swat tactical gear. he opts for protective gear as opposed to the more comfortable uniform he had that day, and instead of the guns navy had, kyle brought with him a myriad of stun guns and a pair of collapsible batons.

"i've always wanted to experience police brutality." he had been reserved for most of his life, but he wouldn't be today. "blackwell should be targeting someone from the shipyard. come on. it's time."

kyle finds himself brimming with excitement. maybe if he wasn't as scared as he was back then, he could have at least had fun in a losing situation.

This dreaming Navy muses that life would be cleaner, if not better, if this was the modus operandi. If humans had to fight for their beliefs instead of sending out champions, the war would be cleaner.[break][break]
“If you’d stuck around a few more years, would’ve seen plenty. Lower Slateport’s full of bad precincts.” Peeling back the corner of his lips, he shows a few missing teeth in the far back. “Least they were nice enough to leave me a pretty smile.”[break][break]
Kicking open the door, he unloads on a grunt. Full-on in the face. Semi-automatic shotgun loaded for bear. It tears through the grunt in an explosion of ultraviolence. His insides paint the wall, leaving behind a larger than life splatter. It forms a swirling mural.[break][break]
“…fuuuck. Don’t think there’s supposed to be that much-” More grunts turn the corner. They have work to do. There’s too many swarming them for banter. For a dream, this is getting very real very quick.[break][break]
Holding the shotgun by its strap, the sheriff pulls out the sidearm. No cowboy fare, it’s a .45 caliber. Fires as fast as he can pull the trigger. Still not enough. He’ll need the stun-gun champ if he wants to get the high score in this dream.

"did you forget i'm part of the problem?" he humors navy. "the oath i took barely meant anything to me."

a baton breaks a knee-cap of a grunt that sneaked up on navy from behind. his foot kicks their head, knocking it out before turning to fire off a stun gun towards one of them that was barely out of reach.

turning to the sheriff, kyle finds himself wrinkling his nose in disgust. "that's so messy though," he whines. "someone's going to slip and fall from all these blood you're leaving behind."

another whack to a grunt breaks the chain of comments he was ready to make.

he whistles in the midst of the slog of a fight. his poochyena howls it up, which somehow helps their performance in this hack-and-slash sidescroller.

“Come on, man. You’re supposed to be one of the good ones.” Navy says with a burning flame in his chest. He adjusts his aim. He has to, lest he be branded some sort of heartless killer. Within the confines of this dream, he is a heartless killer, but best not to dwell on the details.[break][break]

You can better identify weak spots on your opponents.

Being a discount detective was good for something after all. You’d have to be a real pseudo-intellectual to act like you were special for knowing your opponent would be out after shooting them in the knee. Navy feels proud when he takes the knee out from under a grunt. He’s on the side of the angels, but he’s not one of them.[break][break]
Ironsides lands and covers for them with his iron defense. They’re doing well. Even if it’s just a dream – not even a proper flashback, but a dream, Navy takes pride in that as he begins to wake up. Lopez and Navidson. They could accomplish a lot if they just worked together.[break][break]
“Got your back, Mr. Police Brutality. Not much farther now. We’ll see objective: survive in no time.”

a yawn from his poochyena puts a wave of grunts to sleep as navy's skarmory provides them a chokepoint that limits the flow of enemies they have to deal at a time.

"that's just subjective." good ones? he cracks a smile. "do people on hoenn really have such low standards nowadays?"

he takes out a canister from his belt: a smokescreen.

"can you set up your spikes again?" he asks the sheriff. "let's make sure there's nothing between us and the boss fight."

he tosses the smokescreen up as soon as navy takes notice of his words, giving them the cover to head to their objective while potentially losing their chasers.

This mist could be said to make dreams come true. Navy looks and feels the part of an action movie hero, one of the greats from his childhood. A real Bruce Wigglytuff or Arnold Swablunegger.[break][break]
“Say, Lopez. Question before we hit the final boss.” He advances under the cover of smokescreen and spikes. Elsewhere, grunts cry. Their dumb white boots do little to negate the power of Ironsides’s spikes.[break][break]

navy's surprise is met with kyle's indifference.

"does it matter?"

his poochyena yawns in the background, putting the grunts carefully trying to navigate the spiked ground into a stupor. it starts the pile of bodies that will double as their roadblock after the spikes.

"i could explain a theory why," he tells navy, "but that would kill the mood."

perhaps the story was ending, and imagination is starting to meet reality right at the middle. there's no way to know for sure, but the thrill from redoing their regretful actions at that fated day was certain.

if he had been able to summon suicune and raikou, he already would have done so. if he could somehow slowly regenerate everyone's vitality just by existing, it would have already happened. if he had his powers in this realm, he would have done it before navy asked.

"i'm not special." especially in this part of history.

his poochyena roars the flying-type away. it will only give them a moment's reprieve since nothing will stop them from just coming back.

"this is expected though. we charged here knowing we're at a disadvantage. it's the consequences of our actions."

he picks up one of the steel feathers from the fallen skarmory. his time at johto taught him that its feathers were once used as swords, and he plans on doing such.

kyle raises it like a sword. he wants to shout, but his general demeanor stops him from acting out of character. instead, he flashes an awkward smile at navy.

"might as well go down in a blaze of glory in his honor, right?"

“Yeah. Damn right. Let’s see if we can take some admin fuck with us.” Navy picks up one of the feathers. He prattles on about being a sword, favoring offense, all the things you expect a swordsman to say, but he’s never been partial to the weapon himself. The closest he ever got was a stun-rod back in his private detective days that looked like a Paldean paddle sword.[break][break]
“Come on!” Hoisting the feather over his back, he fires. Again, again, until his clip is spent. Only when he reloads does the Pidgeot returned, unphased by the roar. [break][break]
Seeing that Navy can’t be killed with a heart shot, it chooses a different tactic. Its talons wrap around the sheriff’s arms, lifting him high into the air. Higher. Higher. [break][break]
“Kyle!” He shouts again, trying not to turn the shout into a scream.

shit, shit, shit...

kyle frantically looks around for anything useful. his weapons were of no use against a pokemon, but the thought alone brings him to the one beside him.

he points to the pidgeot. "get him drowsy," he tells his poochyena.

immediately, he cleans the grime off of the skarmory's steel feather, and once it regained its sheen, uses it to redirect one of the shipyard's floodlights to the pidgeot to catch its attention.

and once it does, the poochyena's yawn invites it for the acedia incarnate's favorite past time.

it causes the bird to descend, which was nice. what was concerning, however, was how long it would take before it loses its consciousness mid-flight.

they were near water at least, but even that hurts like hell as a landing spot.
