Isaac wasn't wrong, but that didn't make Doug's contract any less ridiculous if you asked him.

"Enough. Ya wanted a check up, yes?" Doug surmised, slapping away the blame hot potato. "Alrighty."

He crouched back down to look over Eris, crossed arms atop his thighs as he gave his favorite little gremlin a squint, as if trying to peer into her soul.

"... Oi, Lele, I don't have x-rays. Lil' help here?" He called out after a moment.

A moment of silence and nothing followed, before Eris' hat suddenly rose off her head.

A conical hat poked beneath it as Lele rose with a yawn, floating out of the hat like a bunny getting pulled out during a magic show.

The ever radiant Tapu Lele lazily fell atop her avatar's back, locking her arms around his shoulders and reclining her rounded chin atop his head as she gave Eris a half lidded once over.

Doug wondered briefly what she was seeing...

[attr="class","inner-finally"] Isaac’s right, but that doesn’t stop her from giving him the stink eye. And she’ll sniff, scrunching her nose as she watches Doug crouch down to her level.[break][break]

How awestruck she is when Tapu Lele comes right out of her hat, her mismatched eyes gleaming with such wonder even as she reaches out to catch her falling cap. And her wide eyes are briefly directed right towards Isaac, her lips mouthing something along the lines of ‘did he just see that?’.[break][break]

He probably did. And yet, she really needs him to agree with her right in this very moment.[break][break]

But the weirdest thing probably isn’t how Lele made her entrance. It’s most likely the way that underneath soaked sleeves and layers of clothes, there seems to be far more bruises than one would expect. Bruises that seem unusually scattered, almost as if she’s just been put through a hell of a fistfight. But she seems awfully calm for just how messed up she seems, leaning over to Reiner to whisper something that garners a snort - Blissfully oblivious to just what may be wrong with her.

For his part, Isaac took a step back from the group. Doug was hard at work here, and he didn't want to interfere with Tapu Lele's Lelevision. Even then, he couldn't help but wonder what the drowsy healer saw. All he could do was hear what Eris told him, kickstart her healing, and hope for the best. Anything beyond took a much more practiced and proficient hand.[break][break]

At least Eris seemed happy. So long as she was, the agony of waiting was manageable.

'If only' He thought wryly as he felt Tapu Lele's weight settle atop him.

Isaac would likely soon realize that he had it backwards: Doug was the one entertaining Tapu Lele's nonsense.

"I keep prayin' you'll gift me that power any day now." He said wryly, smiling wide at Eris' wonderment, barely resisting the urge to reach over and pull on her cheeks.

Valiantly resisting the urge, the youth eventually had his attention stolen back by his matron, who reached down and casually plapped his cheek twice.

He blinked, briefly, before his eyes widened.

"Huh?!" He gasped, causing a giggle to tumble out of the deity as she casually slid off his shoulders, falling off like a sandbag into his shadow— and disappearing into it as one would beneath a deep lake.

Doug didn't pay attention to her theatrics, though— He was holding out his hand towards Eris, making a 'gimme' motion.

"Eris." He said, pursing his lips. "Let me see your arm."

Amidst all her wondering, the newest wonder added to the pile is the way Doug wants to see her arm.[break][break]

"Isaac healed the bruise I got from Cill-"[break][break]

As confident as she is that Isaac had indeed caused the last big welt to vanish, she falls silent when she pulls up her sleeve and spies the new patches of red sprawling all over her arm. Even Reiner seems to reel at the sight, his brows furrowing as he lets out a confused grunt. Not once had she been hit as this trio thoroughly wiped the field of hostile Rockets, he had made sure of it.

Clearly, she and Isaac were united in their merciless abuse of pretty much every power they had access to.[break][break]

She probably would've gotten a kick out of his dragon-slaying spear.[break][break]

What he liked a lot less was the welt already developing along Eris' arm. That wasn't there when he first asked to check on her. That wasn't there during the battlefield, because if anyone tried to approach her it was a toss-up whether Doug, Reiner, or Isaac himself would put them through a world of hurt first. It wasn't from him, was it? It wasn't like she was dangling by an arm while they ran like the wind.[break][break]

Something was rotten here.[break][break]

"Eris. I'm gonna need you to talk to us here." A soothing blue light crackled from around Isaac's body, bathing Doug and Eris in the light of his aurora. It was thin and wavering, his own nerves making such concentrated calm a pain in the ass to sustain, but he had to do his best. They depended on it. "Can you tell us everything that happened before I found you? If you retrace your steps, maybe we can figure out what happened."

"Did he now." He said blankly, slowly rolling a wide eyed, flat lipped gaze over to Isaac, as if demanding an explanation. "How c u r i o u s."

Doug was many things, and apparently, hypocrite was one of them, because he was about to rail Isaac's ass for treating the injured without medical training.

But first...

He turned his attention to Eris' injuries, eyes narrowed.

"Lele—" He began to say, before glancing down at his shadow. "... Shit. Garo!"

From afar, his Orbeetle, currently on watch duty, suddenly swiveled in place to face the group of youths, before zooming up towards them like a t-posing 3d model, virtually motionless as it hovered over them.

"X-rays; I wanna know what I'm dealing with." He said as he gently dragged a hand over Eris arm, the bruises disappearing in his digits wake. "Y'all better pray this is just bad diet."

And by y'all, he meant Isaac.

"Have you been eating your veggies, Eris?" Well, maybe Eris too.

”I’ve been eating them!” Indignant is her squeak, her nose scrunched up as glares at him. Even Reiner, who often winds up being the one who eats those cursed greens, attests to it. Not for the sake of covering up their crimes, but for the fact that he wants to know just what's wrong here.[break][break]

”Fought Cillian, but Isaac healed that bruise. The other two Rockets I ran into never hurt me.”[break][break]

Her heart wavers for a moment.[break][break]

If you wanted to come back, I’d protect you, y’know.[break][break]

She drops her gaze, unable to look Isaac in the eye.[break][break]

Nothing shows up on the x-ray. Nothing out of the ordinary as least.[break][break]

”I’m fine. Must've just bumped something by accident.”

Sure, he didn't usually need to fight through an army to do that. But, semantics.[break][break]

As Eris insisted on eating her vegetables, Isaac decided not to rat her out. Whatever was happening here, it wasn't malnutrition. He knew from experience. Instead, it was something different. Something stranger. What made splotchy bruises just show up on the skin like that? And how could Doug get rid of them with just a wave of his hand?[break][break]

The closeness Cil had to Eris got Isaac's heart skipping a beat, but luckily he was the only one. The other Rockets she encountered, apparently, looked the other way. Good. For every Rocket strangely eager to wail on a child, there was another with a sense of decency. Fearful as Isaac was about what they might do to her, knowing people in the organization still had standards helped.[break][break]

How long until their superiors tried to beat that out of them?[break][break]

At the girl's nervous, averted eyes, he put a hand on her shoulder. "I'm glad you're okay," he said, warm relief spreading past the nerves that once made up his voice. "And if you're ever in need, if any of them do try and hurt you . . ."[break][break]

He hadn't been there this time. Next time, he would be. He had to be.[break][break]

It seemed that ruled out the battlefield. Personal experience ruled out malnutrition. But random bruises didn't just show up the fuck out of nowhere. "Think, Eris. Notice anything funny the last few weeks?" Isaac asked. "Weird mood swings? Trouble sleeping? Bruises you didn't remember having? Any of your Psychic-type Pokemon's vibes off? Anything strange like that."[break][break]

Sometimes, you just had to shotgun your way through the evidence.

But back to the topic of possible causes, Isaac is quick to rattle out a whole list. When she's alone, she doesn't have mood swings, only severe moments of lethargy. Moments she's been attributing to her inability to sleep.[break][break]

The nightmares had been filling in the space that Chu-e left.[break][break]

”No, my psychic pokemon are fine… Reiner would know since he's always with me.”[break][break]

The Luxray perks up, his eyes wide as he looks at her backpack. Then he begins to whine, baring his teeth until he releases it in a sharp bark.[break][break]

”Mes? What about…” Her brows furrow, a frown crossing her lips. ”No, I don't remember her doing anything… I know I find new bruises when I wake up sometimes, but those were happening even before that.”[break][break]

It's a whole conversation exchanged solely between them, his snout scrunched up as he sneaks a sidewards glance towards the two men.[break][break]

"No, I-" Following his gaze, Eris falls silent for a moment, then sighs. "We'll just- We can figure it out after we're done stopping Rocket, yeah?"

"Tips?" He echoed dryly, hoping that was just Isaac's cute way of calling his qualified First Aid training.

He dragged his skeptic gaze over to Eris instead, squinting at her indignant squeaking before glancing over at Reiner, the more reliable source... who confirmed as much.

He sighed in relief... briefly. At least she was eating her veggies, that was good to know. Not that it helped any with whatever this was.

Less good? Knowing that she had fought (and worse yet, been injured) by Cillian Quinn.

"I knew I should've freakin' stabbed him." Grumbled Doug under his breath, regretting he couldn't take a more severe pot shot at the man now.

He didn't get to wallow in the misery brought along by his inadequacies— Eris had some brilliant deductions to make regarding her bruises—

And he had a single response to said deduction.

"No." He replied flatly, blanket-rejecting her dismissal expeditiously. "Not how this works."

Unless she had rolled down a rocky hill in the middle of their fight, that was seriously unlikely.

He considered what it could be, knowing what he did... In the meanwhile, Isaac had taken the direct approach, shotgunning a myriad of questions at the girl.

Well, any extra info helped.

Doug rose to his feet as Eris finished answering the questions she could, cupping his chin thoughtfully.

"Bruises while asleep..." He said, humming thoughtfully "Garo."

His Orbeetle's gaze shone, before it pulled a doctor's briefcase out from the trenches, plopping it besides their group.

"There's a large number of things it could be." Doug said as he popped it open, reaching in. "Eris is right though, now's a bad time. Luckily..."

He pulled a big syringe.

"A blood test should confirm the problem." He said. "Or discard a lot of possibilities at least."

He moved to face Eris, smiling.

"We can leave the test running while we deal with this mess and come back to the results."

[attr="class","textbox"]Oh dear. That wasn't an Eris Halla sized needle at all. Knowing he had approximately half a second before Eris turned feral and started tearing this entire bunker apart, Isaac took her hand in a warm, supportive grip.[break][break]

"Eris," he said, his voice firm and gentle. If she was facing him, instead of the needle, all of this would be okay. The blue aurora rippling off his body began to stretch skywards, its calming light shining down on the three of them. If Suicune's powers would ever have his back, he needed it to be now. "Look at me real quick, okay?"[break][break]

"I made up my mind. Once this battle's over, I'm going on a big, long trip to Alola." In his dreams, maybe. "But I've never left Hoenn before. I'm gonna have no idea where to go or what to see. Her mouth goes dry, her tongue swept across her lips and raking across the many small cuts left behind. Though she isn't quite sure what she's meant to be feeling here, her time with Mesprit has made her more and more aware of emotions that don't quite belong to her. He knew he wasn't fooling Eris. Maybe if he'd seen Doug draw his needle that slightest bit sooner, catching a glimpse before Eris did. However, despite her knowing his game, she still played. Was it to try and make herself feel better? Or to make him feel better for the pain, necessary yet horrible, he had to put her through?[break][break]

He couldn't pretend nothing was happening. Instead, he gently wiped the tears from her face, his hold on her hand that slightest bit firmer. "It's okay. You're doing great," he said, his voice as soft and unyielding as the light they were all being bathed in. "I'm so proud of you."[break][break]

She'd be okay. He wouldn't let her not be. Sometimes, you just needed to hurt a little to save yourself a lot of hurt in the future. Isaac would rather Eris be scared of the pinch than dead from some blood disease. Maybe that, too, was why she played along. Maybe she knew, so long as he and Doug were here, they wouldn't let anything bad happen to her.[break][break]

He couldn't give away the moment the needle came. It'd take away what thin veneer of comfort they were trying to pull together. However, as soon as Doug took the shot, he'd give her hand that last little protective squeeze.[break][break]

He really was so proud of her.
