"A man." One last adjustment, an arm tucked around Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki to keep her balanced. If he were closer to her in age, if he were straight, someone might look on and claim it was intimate. But it wasn't, for so many reasons, and Tempest just keeps his eyes firmly locked ahead of him.[break][break]

At his side, Durandal shifts. The Kabutops sticks close to her trainer, occasionally chattering some vague encouragement or giving a shifting look to the Salazzle.[break][break]

Above, the grinding of stone shifting and settling in the cavern. Tempest bites back the smallest of whimpers, sinking his teeth into the soft flesh of his lip until he tastes blood. For as close as she is, Tsubaki would be able to feel the slight tremble.[break][break]

"Wha-" Tempest chokes on the word, has the clear his throat as he tries to force it back out. As he learned with Makoto Kurumi, talking helps. He pushes on as if nothing is wrong. "What made you leave?"

Men are liars to their core. Whether they know it or not, they can hardly tell the truth. There's only one kind of creature that can't lie in this world, and it's pokemon. [break][break]

Tsubaki tries putting weight on her leg and hisses, prompting Fuji to give the man an evil look. Still, it's a minor setback. She leans against him to support her weight, then recoils meekly. He can tell she's not used to being touched. [break][break]

"What... made me?"[break][break]

She seems taken aback by that. [break][break]

If he truly didn't care, she'd be dead. She may still be, so might as well.[break][break]

It takes her a moment to collect herself, trying to put it in words someone else could understand.[break][break]

It wasn't the invasion of the mainland. It wasn't the look of betrayal in the people's eyes as she helped mop up the streets in the aftermath. It wasn't the lives she irrevocably ruined, all for her selfish desires. [break][break]

No, she could swallow that all just fine.[break][break]

"... Ever had to confront someone you've killed? Look 'em in the eyes?"[break][break]

Answering the question with more questions. [break][break]

Temp is quiet as he listens. There is only his own heavy breathing, the crunching of rocks and dirt as they walk, and Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki's voice in the darkness.[break][break]

Tempest doesn't interrupt. He lets her words wash over him.[break][break]

You were a coward is what he thinks, but thankfully keeps the words locked tight behind his teeth.[break][break]

There are a few beats of silence, to allow Tsubaki to stew in whatever mire she's unearthed in herself. Then, Tempest answers with a question the other did not ask.[break][break]

"I joined," He starts, voice only wobbling slightly from the pressure of the earth around them. "because I fell in love."[break][break]

It wasn't an entire truth. It wasn't so clean cut. The full story was too complicated for what little time they had. Tempest had joined for money, but he wasn't in Rocket proper. He just let them run dirty bets on him. But Temp hadn't been in deep, then. It was just basic shit, shit he could still put out of with clean hands and conscious.[break][break]

"I'd never seen anyone so scary. Or beautiful. Or sad. He made me want to stay alive. Made everything better."[break][break]

Even with all the complicated feelings. Even with all the struggling feelings between them.[break][break]

"You're different, after you're loved back. People in books and movies always say it's a good thing, makes you better. I can tell that he was poisoning me. But, you know? I didn't care. Still don't. I'd slit my own wrist and let him drink it if he asked. I'd do anything for him."[break][break]

It hangs, for a moment, as Tempest sighs. Into the memories of Cillian Quinn. The depths of his love.[break][break]

"I'll destroy the League if it makes him smile. So, in Rocket I'll stay."

If she had any inkling of that feeling she's been searching for this whole time... being seen, being acknowledged, being validated, finding someone who cared for her over life itself... she would go to it in a heartbeat, and surely fall, as he had.[break][break]

"The world hates people like us. Rejects us. So we go to the only place we feel alive. For you, that's by his side..."[break][break]

Desire. [break][break]

The thing she'd excised long ago. Cut out her own heart as penance, nothing remained in its place.[break][break]

It was necessary, to live a normal life...[break][break]

"... for me, that's another world entirely. The Sea under Granite Cave."[break][break]

This world was complicated, cruel. It had taken everything from her. [break][break]

But there by the Sea, she could be anything she wanted... [break][break]

She winces, and stumbles into him. The distraction only works when she's not walking on her busted leg. One misstep and it hurts worse than she thought, bringing her back to the present.[break][break]

"... You won't kill me, so what next? What's the plan?"[break][break]

Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki stumbles. Tempest grinds to a halt, hissing out his own pain as he bends to help keep her upright. The rich ichor of fresh blood blossoms in their noses.[break][break]

"We get out. Then, when we meet again, we can fight like the dogs we both know we are deep down." Because she was right. Temp might have called himself a man, but he knew what he really was. "Over and over, till one of us breaks."[break][break]

It was a promise. A prediction. A threat. A prayer. All wrapped into one without the bow to try and pretty it up.[break][break]

"You better never give up. I hate when people let me win."

But each broken piece, each scar, is proof that she's still alive. It's beautiful, a reminder of all the times this world tried to take her and failed. What was one more?[break][break]

A small pause.[break][break]

Then Tempest's face screwed up in disgust.[break][break]

"Don't let creepy older guys use that logic to try and fuck you."[break][break]

A small groan. Ahead, there was shouts and sounds of battle. A few lights. A breath was sucked in through Temp's teeth, released in some type of relief.

She elbows him in the gut instead, but her heart's not in it.[break][break]

This guy irritates her. But even if he's creepy, and weird, and she hates him... that comment... he's worried about her well-being, however rude it might be. It reminds her of the man who took her in. [break][break]

Only one other person in Hoenn doesn't have the wherewithal to avoid making stupid comments like that, and that's Navy.[break][break]

"You're a teenage girl with issues of some sort. You're into older men." Matter of fact. Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki being in Rocket for so long was all the proof he needed she was fucked up in some way mentally.[break][break]

There was an age gap between him and Cillian Quinn. Real recognized real.[break][break]

A small grunt as he was elbowed. It wasn't full power, but he was sore.[break][break]

"He's just looking out for you." 'And so am I' is implied, but it burns against his teeth. Swallowed acid. Fuck whoever you want, I don't give a shit. I was blowing out backs before I was legal. Just be smart about it."[break][break]

With that last warning and shrug, Tempest stopped at the edge of a cave mouth. Huffing, he did his best to help Tsubaki off him so she could lean against the wall. From what he could see, it was... League. Not Rocket. Well, probably better that way. Tempest didn't kick people when they were down; not everyone was so kind as he was.[break][break]

After Tsubaki was stable, he would step back and hold onto his side. Red soaked through the dense fabric of his Sygna Suit, darkening it.[break][break]

"Fuckin.... start screaming or some shit. Someone will come running." Backing off, Tempest glanced behind him, into the dark cavern. He only hesitated for a moment before taking a deep breath.[break][break]

Without bothering to say any last pleasantries, Tempest turned and hobbled off into the dark. Durandal gave one last look over her shoulder at Tsubaki before the Kabutops followed.
