[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie dreamed about her youth, but in a fantastical Kalos that never was and yet nevertheless rang true in her mind.

In her dream, her mother led her through the palatial, pillared halls of their ancestral manse, their steps clicking crisply along intricately patterned marble floors or sinking deep into rich velvet rugs. Servants bowed low as they passed, addressing her mother respectfully as "Countess Lefevre" and smiling with amused tolerance at Aurelie clanking past in full armor. Her mother, a vision of regal beauty as always in a rich sapphire gown decorated with peacock feathers, acknowledged it all as her due.

They reached a set of magnificent double doors, wrought from polished, shining copper and inset with gears and cogs that clicked and turned in quiet, steady lockstep with each other. Her mother turned around then and reached out to hold Aurelie's hands, encased in articulated steel gauntlets.

"Lili," her mother said, the pet name only her family called her (and in real life, tears crept from the real Aurelie's eyes, unknowingly), are you sure about this? Your skills have ever been in the making and creating of things: weapons, tools, art, even food. Are you sure you are sure you are suited to this path?"

Aurelie swallowed, looking at her mother's deep, twilight-blue eyes, full of compassionate wisdom. She bit her lip, thinking of the sacrifices she would have to make and the time away from her family and her forge that her choice would cost her.

Then she remembered her brother, waiting beyond the great doors, already acknowledged as a genius and a prodigy with all the glory and power that that entailed. She looked at her mother, knowing she was right. And suddenly Aurelie hated them both, for their perfection, for their effortless skill, for their beauty and wisdom as faultless as the delicate masterpieces they both created.

For a moment, she trembled with hatred. But only a moment, for love soon surged forth and won.

All she said aloud was, "I am sure, maman."

Her mother smiled at her then, radiant as the sun. "Then I will support you, mon coeur. I believe in you always." She rose up on tiptoes to kiss her daughter's cheek and then turned toward the doors, pulling them open.

Inside the soaring, vaulted grand hall lined with sparkling crystal windows and adorned with clockwork and mechanical wonders of all kinds, the assembled bannermen of Anistar City stood waiting, as well as a few noble visitors from Snowbelle City and even distant Lumiose City. And there, at the throne-like seat at the end of the hall, at the end of the long red carpet lined with a double colonnade of white pillars, sat her father, Count Lefevre, with Aurelie's younger brother beside him.

Aurelie and her mother approached the high seat to the sound of loud, widespread applause and acclaim. The great hall was alive with celebration. Her heart danced as she bowed her head respectfully and knelt before her father, hearing the sibilant metallic ringing as he drew his sword—fashioned for himself by his own hands, of course.

"For your valor, for your loyalty, for your strength and integrity, I dub thee..." he intoned, pausing at just the right moment for the huge crowd to hold their breaths as one. "...Dame Aurelie of Anistar."

He tapped her once on each shoulder with the sword, knighting her for true.

"Arise, my daughter, the newest and certainly the fairest knight of them all." A chuckle rippled forth from the crowd of nobles. "Arise, and claim your place as a defender of the realm. And rejoice, for the glory you have earned today and the renown you will surely win on the battlefield as well as the forge, my dearest Aurelie."

She rose to her feet then, and her father smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He came forward to take her hands as her mother had done before, and her brother rushed to embrace her. Basking in the sound of cheering, the feeling of soaring triumph, and that loving, beloved embrace, Aurelie knew with unquestionable certainty that she would do anything for her family and that they would cherish each other always.

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Nodding off at her worktable at the end of a long day of tiring work, Aurelie dreamed of Pokemon.

In her dream, the grand banquet after the knighting ceremony lasted for hours, with multiple courses laid out until the great table fairly groaned with food. Count Lefevre's bannermen grew merry with revelry, and the newly knighted Aurelie grew restless. She glanced repeatedly out the windows at the moonlit night, longing for escape.

When she could take it no more, she left as soon as courtesy allowed. Taking off her armor piece by piece, she left only the sword belt around her hips and hurried outside, breathing in the cool evening air with relief. Then Aurelie rushed headlong over the lawns surrounding her family's sprawling manse full of mechanical wonders and into the fields beyond, pausing at a familiar spring-fed pond with high, stony banks.

The world smelled of moss and mist, and it also smelled, rather pleasantly, of leaf mold and drying grass. Silvery moonlight filtered through the clouds overhead, casting seemingly every pebble and blade of leaf in stark, sharp relief. In her dream, Aurelie looked toward the far end of the pond, where she heard the faint whisper of footsteps.

The creature that emerged from the mist was humanoid in size and shape, slender and graceful, with a crested head like a legionnaire's helmet and two angular, blade-like shoulders and arms. Glimmering white and blue in the twilight, the shining Gallade unerringly met her gaze with its luminous garnet eyes.

Within the dream, Aurelie remembered that she had been searching for this Gallade for some time, having heard stories of its swordsmanship prowess. Taking out a Pokeball, she simply flung it directly at the Gallade. With a swift, sure movement, the Gallade easily struck the little ball out of the air with a sweeping, sword-like arm and bowed to her with exquisite courtesy.

Then it sprang toward Aurelie across the pond in a single, balletic lunge and landed lightly beside her. Moving almost too fast to see, the Gallade feinted a sweep at her ankles, before spinning a fluid, flowing cut toward her shoulder. With the poise that comes only in dreams, Aurelie dodged by leaping straight up into the air, moving as weightlessly as a shadow or a ghost.

In an exultant moment of perfect balance, she landed on tiptoe atop the point of the Gallade's extended right arm.

Then the Gallade slashed at her with its other arm, and she was forced to backflip onto the ground, her sword belt rattling around her waist. Aurelie landed on the ground in a low, spinning crouch and swiftly drew her sword. The Gallade whirled yet another attack at her and another, and she brought her blade up to sharply parry each one with cat-quick reflexes.

On and on they fought, in an elaborate and beautiful dance of slashes and sidesteps and stabs and last-minute parries whose speed outraced even the moonbeams pouring from the heavens. The moon glided toward the zenith of the sky and slowly descended as the hours passed. Gradually, the sky lightened as dawn approached and nocturnal Pokemon began withdrawing into their burrows, yet Aurelie and the Gallade continued tirelessly.

It was mid-morning when the Gallade finally ceased its attacks and bowed again to Aurelie, this time with deep respect. And this time, she returned its bow and held out her hand toward it. The Gallade accepted her hand, and together they walked across the grass toward her family's house side by side.

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Smiling softly in her sleep, Aurelie dreamed of adventure and love.

After her knighting ceremony, it fell to Aurelie to appoint her...well, formally they were referred to as squires, but it was hard for her to think of them that way. The two she chose were her dearest companions, the two people outside her family that she loved most: her heart and her soul, and . Aurelie never asked them to serve or obey her, only to come with her on her knightly quests and journeys.

It didn't hurt that their skills beautifully complemented her own. While Xiura was a wise and learned priestess who had studied the secrets of white magic and healing since her early childhood, Jack was a master woodsman who excelled in stealth, guile, finding clever solutions to challenges, and wielding the wicked serrated daggers Aurelie had made for him. Together, Aurelie felt they made a formidable team.

Every month brought a new knightly mission or assignment from her father, the Count of Anistar City.

"All right," Aurelie would say, curling up beside Jack and Xiura. "This month we're apprehending the bandits setting fires along Route 18." Jack quickly located and sabotaged the bandits' hideout, and their arrows glanced off Aurelie's armor or were blown away by Xiura's magically summoned winds, so they proved no match for the trio.

The next month, she told them, "We've been asked to investigate a tower that the local village believes is haunted." It turned out it wasn't ghosts but instead a power-hungry warlock attempting to summon demonic familiars. Aurelie wound up rushing in recklessly to attack him, necessitating that Jack and Xiura work together to rescue her. Thankfully, the warlock's spells and charms proved no match for Xiura's holy magic, and he too was eventually dispatched.

Later on, Aurelie said, while drawing Jack and Xiura close with one arm each, "This time, we have to seek out a rare magical crystal that purifies poisons and infections. But it's in a hidden cave guarded by a host of wild Rhydons." It took a great deal of persistence and ingenuity, but eventually they located the cave and dodged the Rhydons to retrieve the crystal.

By day, the trio adventured far and wide on knightly quests. By night, whether they stayed in a fine inn, a common hostel, a palace, or a tent, Aurelie and Jack would push their beds or bedrolls together while Xiura arranged the pillows and blankets. Once the three of them were folded in together in a tangle of arms and legs, everything felt warm, soft, and luxurious, a safe haven of intimate, tender happiness.

Snuggling in beside each other, they would kiss, embrace, and make love, or simply cuddle and whisper secrets and confidences in the night. They hid nothing from each other, not their tears or their laughter, their darkest fears, deepest struggles, fondest dreams, or brightest joys. There was no jealousy between them by now, only a deep well of mutual love and devotion.

"Let's stay like this forever," Aurelie murmured drowsily one night, after a long day of tracking down and punishing swindlers and con men. "My heart, my soul... Let's stay together no matter what life throws at us. Always."

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Thinking about cotton candy and Ferris wheel rides as she fell asleep, Aurelie dreamed of an evening at the traveling fair.

The encampment of wagons, tents, and stalls had sprung up seemingly overnight outside the city walls, as colorful and unexpected as a sudden cluster of mushrooms after rain. Almost immediately, music and entertainments were set up to attract the local citizens, as well as merchants selling treats and trinkets. There were performances and games of all kinds, from classics like apple-bobbing to races and prize fights open for betting.

Aurelie's father eyed the traveling fair with disfavor and distrust. "I don't trust that they aren't thieves and miscreants, trying to hoodwink the money from our pockets," he stated bluntly. "I want my most loyal subordinates to attend the fair and keep an eye out for any wrongdoing. If they're here to steal from my city, I want to know right away."

Of course, Aurelie was happy to volunteer. The fair sounded exciting and delightful, full of curiosities and shows she'd never get to see otherwise. She hoped the folk running the fair weren't genuinely nefarious, as her father suspected, though at least if she did find evidence otherwise, she knew her father and his bannermen would appreciate her contribution.

Heading into the fair, she savored the bright colors, lively music, happy voices, and tempting aromas that surrounded her like a rosy mist. Feeling freer without her armor, she bought a bag of candied nuts from a vendor and munched on them as she approached a large stage. Two imposing-looking men stood atop the wooden boards, flexing their muscles and waving to the gathering crowd.

"Aaaand now," a barker shouted, "the final showdown between our reigning champion Andel and the scrappy young challenger, Tarkus, is about to begin! Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets and enjoy the show!"

Aurelie perked up as the two men began punching and slugging at one another with huge, meaty fists. Remarkably, the younger and taller of the two had odd greyish-toned skin and the familiar features of . As he landed clever jabs and cuffs into the champion's sides, cheers rang out from the crowd.

"Tarkus, Tarkus, he's our man! If he can't do it, no one can!" the crowd chanted. The champion began to look disgruntled, especially as the chant grew louder and Tarkus' punches grew more powerful. Even Aurelie got swept up in it, cheering along for Tarkus.

At last, the champion picked Tarkus up bodily and simply threw him off the stage. Aurelie immediately booed, and after a shocked moment, so did many others. The sound only seemed to incense the angry champion further, while Tarkus dazedly tried to climb back to his feet after landing awkwardly on the grass.

"I…am...going...to…fix you...for good," the champion snarled, starting to step off the stage and balling one fist.

"No," Aurelie said coldly, stepping forward in front of Tarkus. "I am Aurelie Lefevre, daughter of Count Lefevre of Anistar City and an anointed knight and appointed protector of the city. I order you to back away. Now."

The champion eyed her suspiciously. Without her armor, with only a pair of daggers at her belt, Aurelie supposed she didn't look particularly knightly. But then he took in her red hair and gulped, recognizing her for her father's daughter.

"This isn't over," he snarled, glaring behind her at Tarkus.

"Yes. Yes, it is," she countered, matching the champion glare for glare. As he turned around on his heel and stalked away from the stage, Aurelie turned around and offered her hand to Tarkus. "Well fought, sir," she told him. "I hope we'll be getting to see a lot more of you...and getting to watch you win."

[attr="class","aurelie_lyrics"]All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Her jaw clenching with tension, Aurelie dreamed of war.

Rumors had been circulating for months about a ruthless warlord out of Kanto named who seemed intent on subjugating every region in the world. At the same time, an ambitious neighboring baroness who looked hauntingly similar to had raised an army and moved to occupy some rich lands belonging to Count Lefevre, which she'd been coveting or years. She made it clear that nothing but outright force would dislodge her or her army.

With no other choice, Aurelie's father assembled his own army on the vast plains outside the city. His daughter, now one of his foremost knights, rode to battle against the baroness atop her Rapidash, both of them clad in shining steel armor. To no one's surprise, the warlord also invited himself to the conflict, no doubt hoping to wreak more havoc and carnage to destroy both armies.

As the army's esteemed general, Aurelie's younger brother sat tall in his own saddle, issuing orders and watching as they were obeyed with swift efficiency. Riding to the forefront of the army, he drew in a deep breath and loosed it in a thunderous shout. "Forward, Anistar!"

Roaring in answer, with Aurelie's voice among them, the army advanced.

A storm of arrows from the baroness' archers rained down to meet them, but their armor and shields were well-made, of course, and the arrows did little harm. Under the cover of the arrows, both enemy infantries surged forward to engage theirs and each other's. In the distance, Walsh's archers began shooting into the melee, wounding friends and foes alike.

Blood began to flow in rivers of red as the armies met in the center of the battlefield. Amidst the milling chaos, Aurelie and the rest of the cavalry charged. Both opposing armies gave way as she plunged into their ranks and broke through their lines, driving fiercely toward the baroness and warlords' banners.

Strangely, she felt utterly calm and invulnerable as she wheeled her Rapidash around in a circle. She swung her sword tirelessly, laying about her on both sides with sweeping, skillful strokes that dented enemy helms and snapped their swords. Behind her, Aurelie heard the sound of horns and a distant, triumphant cry: "The General! He's captured the baroness! He's forcing her to surrender!"

The victory fired Aurelie's blood, inspiring her. Raising her sword skyward, she rose in her stirrups and howled out a challenge. "Walsh! Walsh! Come and meet me!"

When Walsh recklessly rode forth to answer her challenge, her Rapidash unleashed a blazing FLAME CHARGE, causing his Glastrier to stagger backward. Taking advantage, Aurelie lit into him with a fury, her sword feeling feather-light in her hand as it bit and slashed at him with snake-like speed. The man snarled and howled at Aurelie like a madman or a raging beast, his armor streaked with mud and gore.

Finally, her sword darting forward like a tongue of flame, Aurelie stabbed sharply at an exposed gap in Walsh's armor. Her sword pierced through into his yielding flesh, and she leaned forward to drive the blade deep with both hands, burying it nearly to the hilt. Walsh cried out once, a sound of astonishment and rage, and then slid to the ground limply, dark blood leaking from the gap in his armor.

A gasp rippled across the battlefield as the shock of his death spread through his army, filling them with disbelief and panic. Dismounting, Aurelie swiftly lopped off Walsh's head with a single stroke. After that, the battle turned into a rout, with the baroness' army surrendering and the warlord's army fleeing.

Aurelie smiled wearily and sank to the ground, regarding the decapitated head of Walsh still gripped in her fist. "I've defeated you," she whispered, staring into those lifeless eyes. "Your reign is over. And if another tyrant like you rises to power...I'll defeat them too."
