…and it doesn’t go into the ball. Truth be told, he was hoping it would. Navy has bigger concerns. Iron Treads rolls into a ball. He begins to spin. The supermassive robot elephant turns into a steel roller that means to barrel down on his Magnezone, Reiner, and Eris.[break][break]
“Eris…!” Navy shouts, his heart catching in his throat.

And, once more, Hattori acts. He acts when everyone else is stunned. He, more than any of the grander Pokemon in Navy’s arsenal, is willing to make a decision. He lives with the consequences. They crush him. Even still, he acts. When Iron Treads threatens to destroy Eris, Reiner, and Magnezone, the frog has the luxury of choice. Someone can be pulled away. Reiner and Eris are together, meaning it is no great feat to pull them away together. Magnezone is different. He’s alone.[break][break]
The choice, then, is this: Reiner/Eris or Magnezone. Hattori chooses Eris. She disappears along with Reiner in a puff of smoke. Reiner’s armor buzzes Hattori. If he had any hair, it would be standing on end. Magnezone is too late. He doesn’t notice what’s coming until he’s caught in the riptide. Pressed into the wall, metal pieces explode with massive force.[break][break]
Oil, viscera, and eyes spray across the humans. Eris is spared thanks to Hattori, but the rangers aren’t so fortunate.[break][break]
“Magnezone!” Navy shouts, only to realize he had never given the Pokemon a proper name.[break][break]
“Damn it.” The sheriff curses. “Damn it! Eris, are you—”[break][break]
He doesn’t finish his sentence. He doesn’t need to ask. No way she’s okay after that.

And yet, he cannot protect her, not in the way that he wishes to.[break][break]

The explosion of metal, the smell of oil and the panicked cries of people. The realisation as her fingers grasp at Reiner's chest that it could've been him instead.[break][break]

It pulls at the back of her head, an uncomfortable notion slithering up her throat. Reaching for her pokeball, she hears the way he grunts as if something has been strained.[break][break]

Dark miasma pours from this ball, shadows swallow the sky as a discoloured Togekiss takes the field. Nothing else matters but her heart pounding in her chest, her other pokemon all recalled as darkness begins its hunt. Even Reiner is called back despite his growls of protest, his warmth slipping away from her as she holds his pokeball close to her chest and stumbles back to her feet.[break][break]

"You... almost KILLED HIM!"[break][break]

As if responding to her will alone, the Togekiss slams her wings towards the ground, a dark blast of energy rippling through as shards of earth explode beneath the Iron Treads.

There’s a lump in his throat when he sees the Pokemon Eris conjures. Togekiss aren’t supposed to look like that. They’re loving things. Sweet, pure Pokemon. They’re proof of a better world, that strength need not be garbed in muscle and rage.[break][break]
This Pokemon is the ugliest creature Navy has ever seen. His eyes go between it and the Magnezone that lays dead at his feet. Rangers and officers run by. They scramble out of the way. With the interdream fog rolling in so thick across the ground, few bother to turn their heads. They don’t see Eris or the strange creature she has conjured.[break][break]
“Eris, not like this.” He says as Shuwen finds his knuckle-dusters missing. The bear grips the Iron Treads, which roars in pain. “We can’t – we gotta be better.” As easy as it would be to slaughter their foes, that’s what separates them from Rocket. Shuwen doesn’t block the Togekiss’s attack, not fully. His back absorbs some of the shock, but enough makes it through to weaken the Iron Treads.[break][break]
Just a few more feet, and Shuwen can push it back into the Interdream realm.

Fingers to her lips produces a sharp whistle, dark tendrils snapping up towards the Iron Treads as it grips it with a Shadow Hold. Pushing it back into the interdream, ripping it to shreds - What's the difference if its existence is merely going to be wiped away? Another flap of her Togekiss' wings produces a Shadow Chill that eats at the bones.[break][break]

“Bring Reiner back out. Ask him which he likes better – the Eris who smiles, or the Eris who acts like this.” He’d been nothing but hot air and smiles with Gabe. He protected his brother no matter what. Sometimes, he’s learned, protecting someone means standing up to them.[break][break]

Her wave smashes against iron rocks. Iron Treads is hit. Screaming in high-pitched agony as only a machine can, its CPU has sustained critical damage. The machine sparks. It whines. It groans. It is beaten back, forced into the mists.[break][break]
Yet it is not alone. Shuwen, too, is hit by the wave. Before he can protect himself, he too is sent tumbling through the interdream mist.[break][break]
“Shuwen!” Navy cries, running up to the edge of the rift. It’s still open, and he can’t quite see what’s on the other side. All he knows is that if he doesn’t go now, his bear is lost to him forever. Unless he beats the crap out of Kouji Matsubara again, he doubts Shuwen will just wander back into his life.[break][break]
“Shit, shit, shit.” He forgets to mind his tongue in front of the girl.

One step, then another. She makes a run for it, barely giving Navy a glance as she rushes right by and dives into the mist.

Just how many times can a man visit this place in one day? Hattori appears at Navy’s side. The frog looks up at his Lord, gives him an empathic squeeze on the shoulder, and urges him forward. Hattori’s scared for Eris. Navy is, too. With a sigh, he dives headfirst into the mist.[break][break]
He dives through the pink and its smell of noxious chalk. It suffocates him with its sweetness. Navy wants to vomit. Behind them, Hattori guides their descent with a water spout. [break][break]
They land in cages. They are impossibly large. Pokémon cry in their confines. Together in one corner, three Magnemites tremble. Navy recognizes at once what’s going on. [break][break]
“Magnezone’s memories, huh?” A fresh pang of guilt swells in his chest. [break][break]
In the other cages are paradox Pokémon. They, too, cry. Iron Valiants languish with injuries identical to the ones inflicted earlier line their iron bodies. That, too, makes him guilty. [break][break]
“Eris?” He asks, looking around for the girl.

Past the trembling Magnemites, leaving all those false Iron Valiants behind -[break][break]

She doesn't even hear Navy's voice over the rush of blood in her ears, a hunting hound dead set on bringing down a weakened beast.

“Eris!” He cries once he’s seen her. “Eris, not like this! Wait up on me!” Throwing out the first Pokemon on his belt, Tormund looks up at him and grins. It’s like they’re sharing a private joke, just for the two of them. Pointing towards the bar, the Perrserker sees what his trainer wants.[break][break]
“Har…!” A boisterous sound, punctuated by the nervousness of a caged animal. Eris is bleeding. She’s on the hunt. She’s tasted blood. Iron Valiants try and lash out at her from their cages with pink blades. Some loose moon blasts that skid off the truck.[break][break]
The truck? Beneath them, wheels rumble. Each of the cages shakes. They’re bound for somewhere else, somewhere different, somewhere new. Maybe the homes they find at their destination will be better.[break][break]
Tormund’s iron head cuts them out. Stepping out of the cage, the cat taunts the Iron Valiants away from Eris. They blast the edge of the truck. Outside is forest. Huge forest, with trees that stretch higher than the eye can comprehend.[break][break]
“Huh.” He muses, only now realizing he’s the same size as Tormund.
