Zev walked from room to room through the darkened hideout, checking the defensibility of each one. His eyes immediately searched for exits, hiding places, and ambush spots—good locations to put his Pokémon. He'd brought a full belt of six on that night, plus the pistol in its concealed holster and the combat knife sheathed at his hip.[break][break]

He was there to put an end to the string of raids on Team Rocket's smuggling safehouses by League authorities. The Lilycove Police Department had gotten bold. They had recently hit a hideout with caged Pawmi and PAWMO; Paldean Pokémon were still wildly popular, and Team Rocket had been raking in considerable earnings from their sale.[break][break]

While the rescue of those Pokémon had not made a huge dent in the crime syndicate's income, it had been the last straw. And so Zev was sent to defend against the next raid—and hopefully stop them for good.[break][break]

But he wasn't alone. A new grunt was assigned to assist him in the hope she would learn a lot from the experience. He'd read her file on the way to Lilycove, but nothing about her background stood out. She was young and angry with the League—the same as many other recruits.[break][break]

"There are two main entrances: the front and back doors," Zev said to her as they reconvened in the main hall of the hideout, an abandoned house in one of the city's poorest neighborhoods.[break][break]

He released his Ariados and Starmie, small enough Pokémon that would not cause too much damage to the hideout in the event of a battle.[break][break]

"Cops usually don't go through boarded up windows, but we should have Pokémon out on each floor, just in case. What do you have?"
