Nenet wakes from her impromptu nap as confused as she is warm; briefly her sleep-addled mind convinces itself she will never be cold or chilly again in her entire life. Cracking open her eyes, she's met with a pile of Rockruff puppies and a Yamper sprawled over her whole body, weighing her down, while Luna is nestled between her legs, the Lycanroc's chin on Zev's knee on the other side of the couch.

Doing her best to not disturb the slumbering pokemon, Nenet croaks out an amused, "Zev," as she lightly shoves his thigh with her foot. "Did you put them up to this?"

A low noise sounding in the back of her throat, she offers a lazy smile as she observes Zev over the pile snoring between them.

Zev looked up from his phone at the sound of Nenet's voice and the feel of her playful shove. He'd been reading emails sent back and forth between other Team Rocket leadership regarding the fateful CLASH AT ROUTE 105.[break][break]

The battle where Nenet had gotten injured.[break][break]

He shook his head, the start of a smile curling the corner of his mouth. "They're just so attached to you," he said. He couldn't blame them; he was the same about his wife.[break][break]

Putting away his phone, he reached down and began to massage her foot. "How are you feeling? Have a good nap?"

Nenet hums in the back of her throat at Zev's reply, her body going lax again beneath the weight of the puppies. Shifting her hand minutely its wraps around the nearby remote and the TV flickers on, its volume low; some sort of Pokemon documentary flickers onto the screen, showing a fleeting shot of wild crystalblooms before shifting to a graveyard.

"I think so," she answers after a moment's pause. "Odd dreams that I don't really remember. Just a few impressions of things, you know?"

"What have you been doing," she asks in turn.

Ever since the battle at the Ancient Tomb, vague impressions of convictions and certainties flickered through Zev. He chalked them up to the influence of Zamazenta, Zacian, or perhaps one of the Ruinous Beasts.[break][break]

Yet he could not deny the manifestation of his older self he saw formed within the interdream mist on Route 105's new island. The crown, the authoritative bearing…[break][break]

"Catching up on work, mostly," he replied, turning his thoughts away from the anomaly to the documentary on the television. The narrator was saying something about the CHILL brought on by the presence of some Ghost-type Pokémon.[break][break]

Zev didn't bother elaborating on which work; Nenet surely knew.

Nenet gives a little nod; she could easily guess what Zev meant and she had no desire to dig. Her gaze instead drifts away from Zev towards the TV for a moment, her hand absently moving to lightly pat the nearest belly of a Rockruff - Arceus only knew which.

"Do you need to go out tonight," she questions, half-paying attention to the documentary. Giving a barely-there shove of her foot upon his thigh to garner his attention, Nenet assures him, "I'll be alright for a little while."

Zev shook his head.[break][break]

"No, not tonight." He gave Nenet's ankle a squeeze before gently extracting himself from the dog pile on the couch. "I'll stay and make you something to eat. Are you hungry?"[break][break]

The Rockruff puppies raised their heads as soon as he mentioned food. Ignoring them, he padded into the kitchen.[break][break]

In the background, the narrator of the documentary described how ancient humans used to leave food for Ghost-type Pokémon at the bases of FUNERAL PYRES.[break][break]

Opening Nenet's refrigerator, Zev peered inside. "It looks like you have enough ingredients for either chicken long rice or a poke bowl."

The documentary mumbles something else about pyres, and in some re-enactment of an old ritual a Growlithe lights one on the screen, flames licking up the screen.

"I could eat," Nenet admits after a moment's thought, her attention purposefully shifting away from the flames to avoid her memories. Her golden eyes follow Zev into the kitchen instead as she lies there, her expression turning thoughtful at the following question. "Poke bowl," she decides, the answer causing not a few Rockruff ears to suddenly prick.

Before she knows it there's a mad scramble off the couch and towards the kitchen, though the Yamper, Jupiter, lies legs up snoring loudly at Nenet's hip. She tries not to laugh as the Rockruffs dance around Zev's feet.

"Do you want me to come help," she asks as she lightly thumps her hand against the Yamper's thick side.

Once Nenet made her decision, Zev removed the ingredients from the refrigerator. He continued to ignore the Rockruff as they swarmed him, their paws tapping excitedly on the tile floor.[break][break]

As one might expect from that year's Steel Chef, he started with the mise en place. The documentary's narrator continued to drone in the background about other FIRE-TYPE Pokémon used as assistants in ancient rituals.[break][break]

"Only if you're feeling up for it," Zev said in response to Nenet's offer. "Poke bowls aren't too difficult to make, though."[break][break]

Her recovery was going well, and he wasn't the type to coddle her. But if she preferred to rest, he would let her.[break][break]

After preparing the ingredients for his and Nenet's meals, Zev cut the leftover raw fish into small morsels. Then he turned to the Rockruff pack crowding his ankles. Upon seeing the food in his hands, they sat down in a line before him.[break][break]

"Good," he praised them before feeding each one a portion of the fish. Their tails wagged adorably in response.

Nenet watched Zev move about the kitchen for a few minutes before she carefully levered to her feet; Yamper was duly collected in her arms, the puppy's snoring abating somewhat at the change in position.

"Good job, babies," she praises the Rockruffs as she passes through to the refrigerator, leaving Zev to finish their meal on his own. She trusted him enough in her kitchen after all this time, and his grasp of Alolan cooking left her quite content after showing him some basics early in their relationship. Shifting the load in her arms, Nenet pulls out a bottle of chilled Alolan sake to drink with the meal and a pair of glasses to set on the table.

As Nenet takes a seat the Rockruffs bound over, dancing around her chair like some rendition of the funereal pyres seen on the television before they all go to flop on beds supplied along the wall. Giving Jupiter a little tickle on his tummy, she coos softly to the puppy who wakes slowly.

"Thank you for dinner," she murmurs warmly to Zev when she finally looks up again.

"Of course. You took care of me when I was injured, so now I'll take care of you," Zev replied as he reheated leftover rice in the microwave. It was the only part of the poke bowl that needed heating; everything else was already ready for consumption.[break][break]

He brought the rest of the ingredients to the table, pausing there to watch the documentary's current scene. A pack of Lycanroc surrounded a BLAZE BREED TAUROS in a tactical maneuver. Working together, they took down their prey.[break][break]

"Are you going to train the Rockruff like that?" Zev asked Nenet, gesturing to the TV as it showed the Lycanroc gorging themselves on raw, bloody meat.[break][break]

At mention of them, the puppies looked at him curiously from where they lay on their beds.

"Mm, and then we got married," Nenet muses. Her expression turns as impish as it does playful as she informs him, "Let's not have any major changes after this round. We would both be terrible parents."

Her attention turns towards the television as Zev points out the hunting Lycanroc; she watches as on the screen, the BlazeBreed Tauros gathered himself for a Flame Charge, the air simmering around him like the flames of the previous pyre, only to be taken out at the heels by the pack.

"Do you think we can? I think they're already content with lining up for a bit of fish - we may not be able to convince them to work harder than." She looks down to the Yamper in her lap, Jupiter's mouth practically salivating as he spies the meal set before Nenet. "Especially this one," she adds before lightly tapping the Yamper's nose and ordering him to behave.

Zev scowled as he returned to the kitchen to fetch the reheated rice. "We're definitely never having kids," he agreed, his tone icy.[break][break]

Children were utterly despicable, unable or uninterested in carrying out even the most basic orders. Rebellious or irrational behaviors aside, they were also physically, mentally, and emotionally stunted compared to adults.[break][break]

There was a reason he'd chosen to open a bar instead of a more family-friendly establishment.[break][break]

Bringing the rice to the table and taking the seat opposite Nenet, Zev glanced over at the Yamper in her lap.[break][break]

"At least Pokémon can be trained," he said, tone softening to neutral. "They're young now, but once they're adults, they should obey commands as well as their mother. Right, Luna?"[break][break]

He looked over at Luna, who still lounged on the couch. The blue Lycanroc responded only with a low huffing sound.

"It was a joke," Nenet assures Zev gently, her hand lifting to lightly caress his wrist before picking up her fork.

Her attention turns to Luna with a look of mirth once more, her nose wrinkling playfully as she says to the Lycanroc, "You didn't need to be trained, did you baby girl? You were perfect already." The thump of Luna's tail on the counch is her response, and Nenet laughs, agreeing, "Yes, I thought so."

With a wink spared for Zev, she digs into her poke bowl, the occasional sliver of fish sneaked out and given to Jupiter who wiggles excitedly every time. Meanwhile, the TV continues on in the background with a perhaps ill-placed add for a grill, promising unparalleled heat and cooking perfect, after the bloody reverie shown only moments ago.

"I have wondered," Nenet muses as she takes another bite, "whether you wanted to send them to some sort of formal training." She points her fork languidly towards the Rockruffs. "I don't know how much time either of us have to devoting to it all?"

Zev tucked into his poke bowl as well, noting how Nenet pampered the Yamper in her lap but choosing to say nothing. Instead, he watched the TV with some detachment. The commercial changed to an advertisement for Pokémon food, depicting the three Hoenn starters: Treecko, TORCHIC, and Mudkip.[break][break]

Nenet's question diverted him from the banal ad. "I like the idea of formal training," he said with a nod. "After your incident, I want to make sure you have a team of strong Pokémon trained to protect you without needing to wait for your command."[break][break]

He tapped his chopsticks against the edge of his bowl in thought.[break][break]

"I could have them trained in Team Rocket's facilities," he offered at length.
