Calpurnia did not enjoy war. It was a nasty, silly thing best left to rudderless men. Her last foray onto the battlefield had cost her two lab subjects. Finding replacements for them added more nonsense to her schedule. Still, it offered plenty of opportunities for field testing.

Today’s first subject? A gaseous substance distilled from Musharna meant to instill hallucinations. Many of them inspired violent actions. Guns shot at the open air as Pokemon turned to battle phantoms and imaginary foes. Buried just under the ground, the dispersal system had unloaded all over a squad of League scouts. After receiving the alert, Kelpie made a beeline for the affected area.

Out of sight—somewhat camouflaged by her tactical gear—the scientist took notes on the victims. Things like their reactions and physical symptoms made it to the top of the list. One by one, the soldiers slumped into a restless sleep. From her perch, the scientist made small talk with her Purrugly. “It almost makes you want to buy the dears a pillow.” The oversized cat heard nothing but white noise. His dual-colored eyes were riveted by the erratic motions of a fretful Togedamaru. Mmmmmmmm.

After a while of milling around, one of the subjects scampered off into the bush. “Oh dear. I do hope he doesn’t get lost.” Calpurnia commented with a teasing little titter. This man would be found and his erratic behavior tied to something biological. A base antidote was quickly thrown together. Someone just needed to administer it.

About the time the delivery person appeared, the Togedamaru rushed toward them. Its stubby arms waved wildly as it squeaked. A warning, perhaps?

Contact had been lost, and naturally, Paxton was sent in to help. Supply requests were beginning to pile up and the next restock had never made it to their destination. The calls weren't answered, but every so often snippets of the radio would cut through the radio silence. [break][break]

Paxton treads carefully, rifle on his back and hands out as he moved silently through the brush. On his way to the supply route, he freezes as something stumbles out, roughly, panicked. He tenses up but they go right past him, quickly mumbling something unintelligible and bringing with them the lightest of pink mists at their heels. [break][break]

"Whoa there- wait-" he said trying to keep them form going off. "Where's t he rest of your team? Where are you going?" he questioned. The person doesn't seem to understand so he repeats himself quickly. They mention something of more people and Paxton has half a mind to let them leave altogether. But that'd be dangerous too. So with a lot of effort, he tries to silence them and shamble back to the clearing. He doesn't get there all the way with his comrade shaking and resisting moving back, but it's enough to see downed bodies. [break][break]

Unclear if they're still breathing. His Riolu moves forward, darting out of the underbrush to check on them. "Robert-" he called with a hiss. But it's too late. His companion runs through, shaking in panic but still staying close to the bodies. Paxton is left with no recourse but to send back a report of what he's found. As this happens a Togedemaru rushes up to him, though seemingly not violently. "What the-" he began before looking up the way the steel rat had come from, only to meet eyes with Calpurnia Kubrick . "Shit." he muttered, freezing on the spot. As if she was a Tyranturm and could only detect movement.

Unfortunately, Purrseus’s patience with his food ran over its usual limit. The cat licked his chops greedily—his sandpaper tongue tracing each point of his jagged fangs. His haunces wriggled as he prepared to pounce. His springtail lashed back and forth, rustling leaves behind him. Dinner is served.

The tottering little rat waddled up to Paxton. “Toge!” Its squeaking intensified as it drew near. Panicked eyes—forced to watch people fall into nightmarish slumber—stared up at him. As a steel type, he’d been immune to the gas. A fact which greatly disappointed the woman in the shadows. As he reached for Paxton’s pants, a shadow fell over him. With a thump, the Purugly’s hefty form fell on top of it.

Thick claws dug into it as the feline rolled away with a look of barely disguised glee. Its teeth pried at the little scales, eager to get to the gizzards underneath. His trainer—quite over his juvenile behavior—ignored the cat entirely. As Paxton froze, her lips perked upward. Though such things were invisible behind the mask, her amusement was audible. What a silly reaction.

It was not as if she was some great, frightening beast. Tsk. Tsk. And, then, there was the gun. What a nasty, distrustful thing to cart around.

“What’s wrong, dear?” She stepped flippantly over a prone body. The man’s breathing was shallow enough to seem dead. “Cat got your tongue?” Behind her back, she rolled the last gas canister between gloved fingers. She winked. “Meow.”

In the underbrush, the rodent was finally able to put up a fight. Its sparks lit up the forest as the steel type tried to nuzzle its predator.

Paxton didn't expect to cut quite so close to the Rocket, and as the Togedemaru is attacked he seems to snap back into it. If only because his partner ran back around and smashed into the big cat with a violent QUICK ATTACK while the Togedemaru struggled too. Paxton backs up, putting distance between himself and the trainer as he lets out another pokemon. [break][break]

A small Chespin jumps out before him as he shoulders the rifle. A Chespin jumps out and moves on the offensive. With a small cry the grass type uses ROLLOUT at Kelpie, aiming to bat away the canister in her hands that she held liek a threat. [break][break]

"So you're the reason my squad hasn't checked in for a bit." he said back as his pokemon begin to move. "What'd you do to them?"

If he refrained from playing with his food, the Purrugly might have enjoyed the snack. As he pushed his weight down on the little orb, electricity raced up and down stocky limbs. “Purrseus!” Calpurnia’s irritation spiked, but there was zero indicator he heard her. The extra layer of fat deadened the arcing current to an annoying tingle. Oh! Look at him wiggle! What a useless little creature! With a hissing laugh, he let his claws dig in. Lost in this delicious, predatory indulgence, he forgot about the ugly boy and his uglier partner.

Until the little pup’s bulk smacked into his side. Though heavy, that attack was enough to shift his right foot off the squirming, bleeding hedgehog. With a hiss, the fat cat turned his dual-colored eyes on the little pest. “HSSSSSSSS!” With a great burst of power from his back legs, the towering cat attacked with claws wreathed in fairy energy. Still sparking from his nuzzle, the Togedemaru raced off into the nearby bushes—some stuff was better left to the professionals.

At the spiky woodrat’s appearance, the woman behind the mask sneered. He thought that thing would be enough? Her toddler was more intimidating. With a sneer, she stumbled out of the Rollout’s way, her gloves digging deeper into the slick surface of the canister. As she straightened, a hand moved to pull mussed hair away from her mask. Her singsong voice was full of bitterness, “Three on two? How very chivalrous of you.”

With a click of the tongue, she flicked a Pokeball to the ground. “I suppose we best even that up.”

At his question, she laughed. Why on Earth would she tell him that? “What a bleeding heart you are.” The woman purred. “I certainly did not kill them.” Yet. From the light, a Charizard burst—a striking likeness to the one owned by her layabout nephew. With a snarl, it spits an Inferno from its maw, aimed at not just the Chespin but one of the sleeping men behind it. "I do hope there is no collateral damage."

Paxton is quick to slap another pokeballs down to get his Riolu some backup. "You're a strong independent woman. Chivalry's dead." he said back, lacking any and all enthusiasm as his Chespin skittered to a halt and turned to face his target. [break][break]

"That wasn't the question I asked." he countered, statement deadpan as his Riolu got back up and FEINTed at the Purugly, trying to pull one over the bigger cat. [break][break]

As the INFERNO strikes up Paxton moves, darting straight towards the scientist and aiming his fist at her gut, intent on forcing her to drop the canister of whatever the hell she was carrying. [break][break]

His Chespin handled the flying menace, blasting a MUD SHOT straight up at Charizard in an attempt to cover for the fallen officers.

The woman’s laughter spills across the clearing. Her voice modulator distorts it into static. “I do love men telling me how independent I am. “ It was mansplaining at its finest—an ironic attempt at equality. The demise of chivalry drew an equally resigned expression. A sigh passed between her lips.

Memories of her husband’s own behavior surged through her mind: countless doors opened and jackets laid over puddles. “Nonsense! It just needs some mouth-to-mouth.” Unfortunately, she doubted this fool knew anything about romance.

Beneath the one-way mask, Calpurnia felt her lips perk up. “It was the one you implied.” After all, was it not his job to be concerned about his squadmates? To wonder what pathogen had carried them off into Cresselia’s embrace? “Certainly more important information than an ingredients list.” A warm chuckle followed. “What would a manlike you even do with that?” Above them, the Charizard easily dodges out of the Mud Bomb’s way. As it sees the man rush its trainer, it smirks and dives toward the grass type instead. Its claws lit up purple as it aimed a Dragon Claw at the little balsa knight.

Self-defense lessons gave Calpurnia the peace of mind to deaden the blow, though it does double her over. Gloved hands tighten reflexively around the metal container. Behind her mask, her face twisted with rage. She remembered her father—always happy to lay a hand on others. “Now, that wasn’t very smart.” The woman’s normal sugar tones are laced with arsenic. The canister beeped once as she dropped it to the floor. A pinkish-blue mist—similar to cotton candy—unfurls from its top.

Behind them, the bulky cat took the Feint head-on. His bulk ate up the attack with minimal signs of discomfort. The fur on his elbows stands on end as the cat’s teeth ground together. How dare this filthy mutt touch him. A feral transformation comes over the typically stalwart beast. Pouncing on the pup, he attempts to cut it apart with a series of vicious Aerial Aces. His teeth soon join the fray, nipping and pulling at anything he can get. His bulk aimed to push the uppity dog into the dirt.

"Tch, fair enough." he said, though its unclear if he's talking about chivalry or the status of his men at this point. "Take it to far smarter people than I to deal with." he grumbled, glaring at the stranger in such close proximity. "Shit!" The grenade-like object drops to the ground, and Paxton shoves the woman back as hard as he can. He dives for the canister intent to scoop it up and toss it as far as his arm can manage before it goes off fully. [break][break]

His Riolu fares worse, yelping against the barrage of AERIAL ACES and crying out in pain as he tried again to FEINT the cat and shive hard paws into the armpits of such a bulky creature. His Chespin stands fast, waiting for the dual type to pull in close before jumping and tucking into itself as he used a quick ROLLOUT aimed at the Charizard's head to keep him off. [break][break]

"This isn't just a colored flare, is it?!" he asked though he doubted Calpurnia would tell him.
