Caleb really wasn't well enough to be out of bed. His injuries were still raw, barely healed, the constant aches and pains of recovery his new reality. There was only so much John Sullivan had been able to do: now it was up to his own body to finish the job. Through it all, he suffered.[break][break]
It was ironic, then, that he was visiting a hospital - but not for his own sake. He was here for someone else, someone who deserved the care and attention of Hoenn's premier medical specialists far more than Caleb ever would.[break][break]
The Ranger gently closed the door of Isaac Merlo's private room, then sagged against it. He sighed, taking a deep breath that aggravated his recently-cracked ribs, tender and tenuous.[break][break]
Isaac was alive. That's all that mattered. The relief was so potent and rich, he felt drunk off it. Against every possible odd, Isaac had survived his encounter with Cillian Quinn. It had come at a terrible cost, Caleb knew - but what didn't, for men like them? The younger man was a defector now, just like Caleb. Amnesty was a mercy, but it didn't take the grief away. It never would.[break][break]
When he opened his eyes, straightening, Caleb thought he saw a familiar face making its way towards Isaac's room. He blinked a few times, disbelieving. And then, when it was truly impossible to debate his recognition, a pang of bitter sorrow spiked in the pit of his stomach.[break][break]

[attr="class","postbody"] The papers fell upon his desk in disarray. Ever since getting to Head Ranger, it seemed like the amount of paperwork that he had to deal with was endless.

[break][break] Ollie didn't know how Laurence Anderson had done it for so long without wanting to tear his hair out from his scalp. 'Or maybe he didn't,' a stray thought mused, temporarily finding refuge in the thought of his long-time friend balding. Only to be brought back to the gruesome reality of his paperwork as a young Ranger walked into his office, throwing yet another stack of papers.

[break][break] 'Ugh... no wonder Anna quit.'

[break][break] The reminder of annalise henderson sobers him more, fills him with regret, at the thought of their ex-head ranger still in recovery. Ollie shuffled through some more paperwork, wondering where wren rourke had hidden the reports of her capture and subsequent retrieval. Ollie had asked him to set them aside so that he could look through them properly. Maybe there would be clues of Caleb Harcourt in there too —

[break][break] And that's when he saw it.

[break][break] 'Isaac Merlo. Dewford Hospital.'

[break][break] "Hey!" he shouted. "How come no one showed me this?"

[break][break] He stood from his chair, whisking off his jacket in a single motion and headed for his destination without delay. Dewford Town. Ollie didn't know him, but he knew Isaac Merlo's reputation.

[break][break] In other words, an ex-rocket. Maybe he'd know where Caleb was.

[break][break]

[break][break] As Ollie stepped off Dewford's shores and towards the hospital, he was filled with a sense of trepidation. The last time he'd been around those rifts was when they'd all stepped into the Ultra Deep Sea together.

[break][break] The place where they'd taken refuge directly after in a makeshift medbay — the very same place that he'd found out about annalise henderson's disappearance and capture — was now empty, simply filled with beach sand and shoreline. Wind whistled through the air as Ollie stepped into the hospital entrance, glancing around for a receptionist.

[break][break] "Hey, do you know where Isaac Merlo is?"

[break][break]

[break][break] She directed him towards the door.

[break][break] It wasn't the first ex-rocket Ollie would've met, but it was going to be the first one that he met as a Head Ranger. He still felt like an alien in this skin; felt like this wasn't him.

[break][break] The things he had to talk to Isaac Merlo about, now, as Head Ranger felt so much more serious than it would've been if he was just Ranger Captain. But this was something he had to do. If not for his position, then for himself.

[break][break] His thoughts were so stuck in the clouds that he almost didn't notice the familiar figure if not for the fact that Tofu let out a sharp 'Pikapi!' from his perch on his shoulder. Ollie blinked. Huh?

[break][break] 'Wait - '

[break][break] "Caleb?!"

[break][break] Emerald green widened into saucers at the sight of Caleb Harcourt standing across from him. In the flesh. It was like someone had sucker punched his gut, knocking the wind right out of him.

[break][break] It all happened in the blink of an eye.

[break][break] It didn't matter that they were in the hospital. That he was Head Ranger. That he was supposed to be visiting someone else.

[break][break] He sprinted across the floor like he was running off a cliff's edge —

[break][break] Ollie hugged Caleb Harcourt.

Caleb froze as Ollie's arms wrapped around him.[break][break]
Time seemed to stand still. Perhaps a different man might have hugged him back, a cathartic release of pent-up emotion, allowing in the welcome comfort of a beloved friend's embrace. But all of the years of torment, of disappointment, of failure had shaped Caleb's heart, turning it against anything that attempted to console him. The last remnants of his resolve had finally shattered during his recent capture, the redemption he'd been seeking since escaping Kanto slipping decisively out of reach, and so, despite Ollie's best intentions, Caleb flinched.[break][break]
"Ollie," he muttered coldly, doing nothing to return the hug. An awkward silence hung in the otherwise hectic hospital corridor.[break][break]
"Why are you here?"

It felt all too real — like he was young again and watching his sister sign up for war, watching her sign her life away for a thing that he couldn't control.

[break][break] He hadn't thought about what it would be like to see Caleb again — if he could see Caleb again. But when he saw his childhood friend standing there, all whole and real and there, he couldn't help it.

[break][break] It was like life had color again. Life had spun into motion.

[break][break] His body seemed cold and unfeeling, as if he was hugging stone, and not the boy that he'd had dreams about.

"Were you?" Caleb asked softly, ignoring Ollie's question. "Worried about me?"[break][break]
His voice sounded far away to his own ears, like he was hearing it through a radio. A flat monotone, unfeeling. His stormy blue eyes did not meet Ollie's; he could not bear to take in the other man's unfettered relief.[break][break]
"So you were looking for me, then?"[break][break]
It was a cruel question. The Rangers had reports, easily accessible. Nobody had been looking for Caleb: especially not Hoenn's Head Ranger. Caleb wasn't an idiot, he knew there were competing priorities; he knew there were, hierarchically, other people that had needed saving.[break][break]
But still. But still. Anger burned in the pit of his stomach like a toxic kindling, one spark away from being ignited. It wasn't so much that Caleb thought himself worth saving; it was that the newly defected Isaac Merlo was. And if the League didn't give a shit about former Rockets, if "amnesty" was just a word that made them feel good rather than do good...well. Caleb could not leave Isaac to such a fate.[break][break]

[break][break] the thought lurked in the back of his mind, pushed to the front of him. guilt yawned like a crater in his chest, the same guilt that he had felt when annalise had finally woken up from her sleep.

There was obvious guilt reflected in the Head Ranger's expression, but Caleb's heart was already hardened against it. Penny, Caleb thought bitterly. Of course Ollie would listen to her, his longtime confidant. But what was the point of a government intent on protecting its citizenry if it did not have the means to do so? The venom that had replaced the blood in his veins hissed at him that politics was always personal. Altruism would always lose to selfish gain.[break][break]
But Ollie cares, a smaller voice whispered, trying to remind him. Ollie actually cares.[break][break]
Unfortunately, caring didn't make a goddamn difference if it didn't lead to doing.[break][break]
"I'm here, because a better man than you - than all of you - risked his life to save me."[break][break]
Caleb glanced down the corridor, to where Isaac Merlo lay beyond a sterile hospital door.

[break][break] confusion filled the head ranger's expression as caleb shrugged him away; the rejection felt like a slap to the face.

[break][break] had caleb ever done that before?

[break][break] "what are you talking about?"

[break][break] he'd been so ecstatic to see that caleb was here, that caleb was alive and in one piece that he hardly had tried to think about why that happened. he had assumed that caleb would've been happy to see him too. but at the torrent of emotions that currently ran through his childhood friend's face, it was clear as day that the other didn't feel the same way.

[break][break] he followed those seablue eyes towards the hallway, past the dim artificial lighting that illuminated it and to the door. then it clicked. why ollie had come here in the first place, and why caleb was also here.

[break][break] "isaac saved you?" he blinked. "that's..."

[break][break] he struggled to find the words.

[break][break] "that's great! that you guys are both okay. that he was able to save you."

[break][break] ollie's face crumpled into a mixture of relief and regret.

[break][break] "i really was worried for you, you know."

[break][break] 'but you didn't try,' a nasty voice inside his mind reminded him. a voice that sounded eerily like the one that he had heard from the ultra deep sea. 'you didn't try because you're a coward.'

[break][break] he'd tried and he searched for anna. but wasn't that just because Greyson Connors had gotten the intel? because DEREK HOFFMAN had been willing to accompany him? why hadn't ollie searched as hard for caleb?

[break][break] because he assumed that other people — other people that caleb cared about more — would have done so?

Something was starting to click for Caleb, like a final puzzle piece falling into place after nearly two decades of trying to make sense of a clumsy kiss in a dimly lit dormitory kitchen. When they were younger, Ollie's unbridled optimism had always been so undeniably attractive - a sun shining through a morning window, lighting up an entire room with its charismatic brightness, capable of bolstering spirits in a matter of seconds. But that had been a different time: things had been simpler back then.[break][break]
Now, the stubborn attachment to a sunlit optimism fell...flat. Because it didn't acknowledge that there was pain. Suffering. Nuance. All Caleb wanted was for Ollie to validate that he was hurting - that this whole situation was fucked up beyond belief - but instead, the Head Ranger acted like nothing was actually wrong. It might be true that he was genuinely glad to see Caleb alive, but there was a vivid difference between being alive and being alive and okay.[break][break]
"It's not great, Ollie," Caleb snapped, shaking his head. "Isaac almost died for me. Can you even imagine what it's like to have to make a choice like that?" He would never forget the moment he'd finally decided to flee Kanto, the terror he'd felt boarding that tiny ship in the middle of the night, waiting for Rocket to realize what he'd done and send their assassins after him.[break][break]
"You run an amnesty program for people like us, but do you even understand what we've been through?"[break][break]
He doubted it.[break][break]
It stung. That Ollie should hand out kindness like cookies, to every person who seemed even a little hungry for it, and not stop to think about what each person in his life actually needed. Actually wanted.[break][break]
Especially Caleb.

[break][break] The truth was — Ollie didn't know. He'd run away from it, from Kanto, from Eva Morales, from Caleb Harcourt, from PENELOPE LIVY. He'd run away from all his responsibilities, forcing everyone else to live the life that he didn't want to live. The life that he'd refused to live.

[break][break] Ollie's sunny optimism could be infectious, yes, but it could be just as much as a poison.

[break][break] And the only person who'd known that - at least, before - was PENELOPE LIVY.

[break][break] And she'd left him for it.

[break][break] Stubbornly fierce in his love, but also in his friendship with people like willow atkins. Ollie had refused to believe anything less. He'd refused to hear what PENELOPE LIVY had to say, back then, and he'd lost so much for it.

[break][break] Just like he was losing Caleb now.

[break][break] He took a breath, steeling himself. He shouldn't get upset. Not when Caleb was here, was alive. Ollie reached for his wrist, an attempt to breach an understanding.

Caleb almost let Ollie grab him, pull him into some semblance of balance - of reconciliation. But he jerked away, putting more distance between them. He'd overstayed his welcome here, and the more they argued, the more Caleb felt sick with fatigue and disappointment.[break][break]
He couldn't bear to listen to Ollie's pleading. It was easy to say "you didn't tell me" without acknowledging that he'd never actually asked. The push and pull between the broken and the whole was a dance Caleb did not know the steps to, and the more he tried to make sense of it, the more he fumbled - falling over his own feet.[break][break]
You should have confided in him. You needed someone when you first came here, but you didn't make any effort to reconnect.[break][break]
The guilty voice in the back of his mind only caused him to withdraw further, crumpling in on himself as he embraced his own self-loathing. It would be better this way. Ollie could go and be with the people he really loved, rather than continue to be weighed down by Caleb's messy self.[break][break]
"I need to go," he choked out, looking away. "Go and talk to Isaac, Ollie. He deserves your kindness - your understanding - more than I do."[break][break]
He brushed past Ollie, then, and did not look back.
