Shalin didn't want to be on the front lines. As the one slated to assume boruta maher 's Ranger Captain seat, though, she felt compelled to do so. Heroism would look good on her resume and fend off those looking to challenge her for her seat. It wasn't about her, though; it was making sure denizens of Dewford, and the rest of Hoenn, had homes to return to.

Stealth was not an option for the Ranger Captain elect; she made her cute but terrifying presence known as she bumbled and bobbed above the island on the back of her Beedrill, Queen Zing. As they made a sweeping turn over the north side, above deep Rocket territory, she put her hand over her mount's wing close enough for the wasp to feel the air disturbance. It was a signal for the bug-type to be ready for her trainer to activate her inert SYGNA SUIT at any moment and slide onto her wing to add volume to the already loud buzz.

Saddled on the back of their dragapult is a familiar comfort for Fern. Cecilia is their most trusted companion, and so it is obvious that Fern would select her to enter the fray upon. It is not a fight they are looking for at the moment, though.[break][break]
Of course, they will welcome the chaos all the same if it comes their way. No, they are searching for jayden cross, having unintentionally split apart from the other admin in the thick of the conflict. An aerial provides insight - or they hoped it would. Somewhere higher still, Fern knows Tapu Koko is flitting about, the admin's agitation shared by their patron.[break][break]
Rocket ground yields no success, but before Fern can turn to look beyond enemy lines, a flash of green diverts their attention. "Look at what we've found, darling," they coo to the dragapult, hand sliding across the top of her head in silent command. The spectral dragon trills and fires a warning shot at the oncoming ranger - the projectile of smaller dreepy rocketing like missiles to their quarry. (DRAGON DARTS)

Suddenly, DRAGON DARTS flew toward Shalin with speed and agility so great that it was clear no matter how much Queen Zing bobbed and weaved, there was no dodging them. Hurling her Flygon's Poké Ball skyward, the buzzing dragon flew out of it. Both Shalin and her most loyal partner glowed green, a PHYSICAL SHIELD surrounding them both and blunting the explosion of dragon energy from the Dreepy warheads.

The hostility was not met well, Shalin leaning in on her Beedrill. The noisy bug-type zipped above the spectral dragon, purple energy of her own gathering around her rear sting. The blue-eyed wasp plunged toward Fern and their Dragapult, gravity amplifying the piercing power of her barbed rear end. (DRAGON HAMMER)

The dreepy trilled as they found purchase, irritated that they connected with the security of a shield rather than the hide of the Pokémon carrying the green-haired ranger. Peeling away, the dragon young returned to their caregiver and tucked within the safety of her horns once again.[break][break]
But that didn’t mean Fern was done with the hunt, of course.[break][break]
Bound by the tether that resonated between them, Tapu Koko followed the line back down to Fern. It zipped around their acolyte, darting movement difficult to follow at that windy altitude. “Have you come to play too?” he asked of it, and its only response was the zip and twist of its body as it rocketed up above Fern to snap its shielded arms together as the beedrill plunged downward.[break][break]
The power packed into its stinger would collide against the sharp orange and black of the avian head the shield created—only splitting apart as Tapu Koko broke away, the BRAVE BIRD swinging sharply at the underside of the hornet’s thorax.[break][break]
The patron cast a baleful look down at its supplicant, as if to say get moving. Fern only grinned wildly up in return. They were a divisive pair, their tactics clashing as much as they came together with synchronicity.

Shalin's PHYSICAL SHIELD shattered upon contact with the Fairy-type god, the BRAVE BIRD striking both rider and wasp as though the shield were not there. Both of them were launched into the air, her green, insectile steed felled in a single blow. Not even Mega Evolution would save her.

Whatever that Pokémon was, it packed a hell of a punch.

There was no holding back anymore. Whistling for her Flygon, her Sygna Pokémon buzzed skyward, waiting for her momentum to reverse before catching her. Landing in the saddle, the Ranger's eyes shifted to the slippery Pokémon below, red eyes fixed on its position. "Sandy, dive at them and slice them with your DRAGON CLAW." With a nod, the green Pokémon's wings roared, Shalin fighting against apparent negative gravity as the duo came down upon Tapu Koko with draconic might.

“Nice acrobatics,” Fern observed light acrobatics. Not that he thought the flips and twists would do much good in the long run. They still sought to strike ranger and dragon from the air, no matter their bonded connection. The hornet was down, the rest would follow.[break][break]
The flygon’s slashing claws came down at Tapu Koko, and despite its impressive defenses, it came away with scratches from the force alone—much to the deity’s disdain. “Now is not the time to go easy,” Fern warned it, amusement seeping into his tone, “but I’m sure you already know that."[break][break]
He sought to lay future groundwork for Tapu Koko to work with. While it retaliated upon the flygon and her trainer with the onslaught of NATURE’S MADNESS, Fern sat upon the back of his hovering dragapult and focused. Static built in the darkening sky, and the slow rumble of thunder echoed at an overwhelmingly loud volume from their high altitude. Electricity crackled in the air and spread out around them to create a charged perimeter.[break][break]

fern can create ELECTRIC TERRAIN or an ordinary electrical field of reasonable size. those caught within the field are more liable to be shocked, revealed, and rendered with the PARALYSIS CONDITION.[break][break]

similarly, they can also summon isolated electrical storms.

Before Shalin could even comprehend that this mysterious Pokémon had to be a Fairy-type from the DRAGON CLAW bouncing off it, she and her Flygon became wrack with NATURE'S MADNESS. The Alolan deity bore its full might upon both of them, Shalin's Sygna Suit saving her Flygon's life. Wrack with PARALYSIS from the gigantic electrical field surrounding the entire battleground, she could barely feel the pain Sandy suffered from the impact of the fall. Even the Ground-type was not immune to the Charlatan's electric field, its divine power ignoring the laws governing ordinary Pokémon.

Shalin, likewise, owed her life to her Flygon, the Sygna Pokémon using the last of its energy to help break Shalin's fall before collapsing on the spot. Her suit now inert, she visibly bled, more vulnerable than she had ever been. She reached for the switch on one of her Poké Balls, in her last moment clicking it. A Noivern emerged from it, hunched over to protect Shalin from the Tapu Koko.

Little did Piccolo know she would be just as doomed as Sandy was...

An experiment in their joint abilities proved effective. Fern hadn’t been certain that the stun of the paralysis field, combined with NATURE’S MADNESS would be enough to fell the synced pair, but in the end–that was all they needed to do. With the flygon and her rider driven to the ground, Fern would say that it was a job well done. The objective was achieved and they could go back to their search for jayden cross in no time at all. He stared down at the green tangle that had made impact with the ground.[break][break]
And then she had to release yet another defender.[break][break]
Fern sighed, drifting down in the air so that he was closer to Shalin, but still above her. His head tilted to one side, the motion giving his canid mask an uncanny, stilted feel as he looked down at her. The glow of her sygna suit dimmed, and he was sure that she probably couldn’t hear the disappointed cluck of his tongue.[break][break]
“You really should learn to quit while you can.”[break][break]
Their attention shifted sideways to the Tapu Koko and they waved a hand idly. “This isn’t even all that fun anymore,” he complained to it. It was a pity, though, that she kept bringing out dragons. Fern bore no fondness for enacting this sort of wrath upon a grouping he was partial to.[break][break]
But that was a private thought, and this was not the time or place.[break][break]
“Do you yield?” He asked her then, peering down with curiosity as electricity continued to crackle around them. It wouldn’t matter what she said, not really. Tapu Koko’s pincer-like arms began to glow with the bright pink premonition of another wave of NATURE’S MADNESS. A storm simply brought down to earth.

There would be no answer to Fern's question as the nimble Tapu Koko floated anove Shalin and her guardian Noivern. Shalin's consciousness was fading fast. She clicked the button on her radio to transmit a signal, only managing "HQ... this is..." before she passed out from blood loss and the shock of absorbing her Flygon's shared pain. Piccolo fervently defended her, bravely standing in front of her trainer to the very end.

The second bout of NATURE'S MADNESS exploded over the bat-like dragon. With no Sygna Suit to protect her, the light of the Fairy-type attack melted the Pokémon's body, just as if it were being thrown into the sun itself. The light, bright enough to cast shadows over the unconscious Shalin's internal organs, would have burned the trainer's eyes and permanently blinded her if she didn't collapse face first.

Not a trace of the Noivern's corpse remained. If Shalin's help didn't arrive soon and Fern was feeling particularly vindictive, she might suffer a similar fate...
