VCT Champion

after all. But, the deck was stacked heavily against him, and Greyson and his Iron Valiant were to the type to respect their opponents to the bitter end.

So, when the frog deploys a

smokescreen

, Zero does little more than stand still as she waits for an attack. As expected, a

hydro pump

breaks through the thick grey cloud, but it meets the extended

wide guard

that is a violet-hued barrier.

The second the pressure ceases, she drops the guard and swings her blade in a horizontal arc, a thin line of psychic energy tracing its every movement. The

psycho cut

was powerful enough to leave grooves in the stone of the wall beyond CIAN MAHER, and for once, Greyson didn't seem to mind.

because it's only natural for an attack to follow the WIDE GUARD. froakie realizes as much as well but when it goes to leap away from the incoming PSYCHO CUT, it gets clipped, and even that's enough to knock it to the ground.[break][break]

still conscious, froakie struggles to get back up but it tries its best, wobbling and giving it everything only to be picked up by cian who had jumped into the battlefield.[break][break]

"don't worry ribbit-san. you did your part. i'll take it from here."[break][break]

after placing a kiss on froakie's head, cian recalls the water-type, then jogs back to his side before finding his next pokeball.[break][break]

it's then, as he looks across at the elite four, that he hesitates. once somewhat friends but not anymore, Greyson Connors has shown him nothing but judgment and criticism for his past. though there is a foundation for such treatment, cian finds it unfair. has he not proven himself enough? what more does he have to do?[break][break]

following his intuition, he swaps pokeballs and finds one he hasn't had to use in a very long time.[break][break]

GLISCOR emerges, an echo of the life he had escaped from. its SWORD DANCE prepares it for battle.[break][break]

Greyson know from experience that each strike would now feel like a mountain was collapsing on them.

Acting as if to leap from her backfoot, instead, it sinks directly into the stone floor in the span of a blink. From beneath the Gliscor a violet-bladed halberd emerges from

sneaky shadow

, eager to pierce and mount the bat-like creature like a prize.

though used to fighting in SANDSTORMS, gliscor is quick to adapt without it, not needing to rely on its SAND VEIL. it proves to be a slippery pokemon, much like froakie was, and swans up in the air to avoid being impaled by SHADOW SNEAK.[break][break]

it swivels, then, body turning with such acrobatic ease before lunging down to sink its THUNDER FANGS into iron valiant, leeching off the ELECTRIC TERRAIN in hopes of paralyzing its opponent.[break][break]

for now, gliscor holds its position on iron valiant, stinger flicking up in prepration of its next attack.

He had a very difficult time reconciling the Cian he knew, and his complicated past. More difficult than it had been with Caleb Harcourt, for one; nevertheless, he shakes his head, firming his resolve.

"Prove it. I don't want your apologies, or your regrets — prove to me that you're worthy of Dahlia's trust in you. I just have one question—"

Gliscor's stinger strikes the vibrating violet blade of Iron Valiant, sparks spraying as it trails downward and pierces through her shoulder. She makes no sound, simply retaliating with a punch to the bat's gut.

A whistle brings her blade up short. With hesitance, she brings the spear down, but keeps it ready in-case.

Cian's words are taken in-stride, even if Greyson doesn't respond to them directly. He had his answers, and now he just needed to ruminate on them. In the meantime...

"You're an excellent trainer, Cian." The lingering but sits heavily in the air, before Greyson fills the space. "But, I'm hard pressed to recommend you to become a Champion-ranked trainer."

He regards the complex positioning the two Pokémon were engaged in, and the hard-pressed fight to come.

"These challenges exist to push trainers to their limits, but it's also proof of the League's trust in these trainers. You have Dahlia's, you might even have others', but as it stands right now, you do not have mine."

Reaching out, he recalls the Iron Valiant to her orb. Silently, he studies Cian, thoughts whirling.

"I will give you a chance. Complete the rest of the gauntlet and earn the respect, and trust of my peers. Then, before you face kyle lopez — come see me. Then, and only then, will you get a chance at my endorsement."
