He could still remember the shouting, the sounds of battle, and the cries of the fallen. It was all so vivid as he walked through the graves, almost as though he was still among the conflict.[break][break]

As he arrived at the site of the primal node, a warm breath exhaled vapor into the Autumn night air. This was the moment where his will had been broken, where he'd been tasked with potentially dooming all that he'd come to know and love just to ensure a victory for Team Rocket. What was the point of winning, if everyone lost? [break][break]

Amber eyes moved skyward, where he'd seen the spirits of the dead cross over from their plane into the living world once more, the apparition of noah faber's Machamp among them. It was the turning point for Rowan, the opportunity for redemption and change. As much as he cared for Cillian Quinn and Lulu Flint, he couldn't live with that hole in his soul much longer before it ate him alive.[break][break]

Yet, he couldn't help but ask himself as he looked up at the stars, whether or not he'd made the right decision.

Cillian often found himself here. Grief was a funny thing; it could hit you when you were least expecting it, and in those times, he mostly wanted to be alone. Though Tempest Quinn has helped him progress leaps and bounds from where he was, the expression of vulnerability still does not come easy to him. Perhaps it never would.[break][break]

Decades of trauma were difficult to undo, especially without therapy.[break][break]

So he retreats, as he often does, to Mt. Pyre. To an unmarked grave in which failed experiments lay, and at which he would often reflect upon the loss of his Kanto Pokémon. Faolan, one of those lucky enough to cross the Border, accompanies him tonight.[break][break]

And it's Faolan who senses the presence of another, letting out a soft growl to warn his master.[break][break]

Cillian isn't disguised. His Dhelmise hides in the shadows of its PHANTOM FORCE, primed to whisk him away at first sign of trouble.[break][break]

He looks in the direction Faolan has zeroed in on, and freezes.

[attr="class","rowwtw"]Gooseflesh crawled over Rowan's skin, the hairs on his neck raising. Danger was sensed before it was seen, a primal unease settling into his bones at the presence of one who sought to do him harm. "Cillian." Rowan muttered underneath his breath, turning on heel to stare his brother down with a weary gaze. [break][break]

He'd gone the entire last year without running into the man, it was no surprise that their paths would finally cross, destiny forcing them together once more. Why did it have to be tonight, of all nights?[break][break]

"Guess we knew this would happen some day." Rowan commented, his tone flat. A hand dug into his pocket, plucking free a cigarette and igniting the end with a small plastic lighter. A deep inhale drew smoke into his lungs, holding it in place before blowing the cloud outwards. [break][break]

A nearby tree shifted slightly, the bark appearing to slither and twist. Perceptive eyes would be able to see the camouflaged form of an Inteleon, watching the Rocket with trepidation.[break][break]

"What happens now?"

Scarred fingers slide beneath his jacket, curving around the cool metal of a firearm drawn out in one, smooth motion.[break][break]

Rowan's voice makes him falter. It's slight, perceptible only to someone paying utmost attention. His throat bobs with a hard swallow as grief whelms. Much as he has professed a desire to end this traitor in Rocket's name, he has not engaged in the active hunt.[break][break]

He does not miss the Inteleon. Neither does the Dhelmise who lurks in shadow.[break][break]

"You know what."[break][break]

Though cold, his tone tightens around grief he cannot keep out.[break][break]

"You knew," he growls. "And still you left."[break][break]

Moonlight gleams on gunmetal.

Rowan assumed the man had no choice but to pursue him to ensure their own safety, but were they really capable of killing their own brother?[break][break]

"That's how important it was for me, Gavin!" Rowan spat, his fists clenching ever so slightly. "I knew and I still wanted to leave!" Why couldn't they see that? The decision wasn't arrived at lightly, this was something he'd agonized over for months.[break][break]

"Call me what you want, selfish, a coward. Maybe it's all true, but at least I have my freedom now! I'm not chained to the will of a madman who would rather doom the entire region than let the League gain the upper hand!" The Inteleon advanced closer to Cillian, slithering between the headstones in case they decided to open fire.[break][break]

"I loved you, and Saoirse. You were the only family that ever gave a damn about me, and you still handed that letter to Walsh." He grimaced, the pain of betrayal evident in his eyes. [break][break]"At least our sister has a heart, she burned it instead of sending me down the river for her own benefit."

"You are a coward!" Cillian snarls back. He doesn't yell. Never yells. Their father had made sure of it. "You didn't give a damn what it would do to either of us! You chose this, you ignorant child."[break][break]

Rowan had sought power enough to swear allegiance to a criminal organization in search of it. Now, he sought freedom from his own bad decisions at Cillian's expense. At Lulu Flint's expense. How dare he?[break][break]

Shadows warp around Cillian as the Dhelmise hiding within them responds to the Inteleon's presence. The miasma shifts, too, spreading over the mountain to mingle with the ever-present fog.[break][break]

"Don't talk to me about my sister. You lost the right to say her name when you risked her life with your stupid stunt."[break][break]

Saoirse had more heart than him. Rowan was right about that. But Cillian had grieved, too, in his own way. It shows in that he still hasn't fired the gun. That he lashes out with words, at first, and not gunshots. Yet he does not holster the gun. This could only end one way.

"You said you could protect me, but you couldn't!" Fists were clenched tight, the leather of his gloves creaking and groaning from the pressure of the vise. "You can't protect me, and you can't protect Saoirse, not as long as you do Walsh's bidding!"[break][break]

An exasperated laugh escaped his lips, his posture tense and guarded, unwilling or unable to accept the blame. "If he would have commanded me to kill, would you have really defied him?"
