[attr="class","inner-finally"]How quick he is to accept her invitation. It's nothing as thrilling as fending off pirates, or crazy as fighting gods. Nothing like exploring newly discovered ruins or delving a little too deep into caves chock full of tera crystals. Little does he know that it still means a lot to her that he'd partake in such a seemingly mundane activity, that it briefly helps to cover the holes left in her heart by those she loves.[break][break]

With Reiner's guidance, they're returned to the place where they'd started, greeted by the soft scent of char even with the heavy salt. Cold water rushes to cover their tracks, still clinging to their skin as if bemoaning the loss of several new friends. It's a wonder how wild pokemon haven't rummaged through the backpack she's abandoned, nor taken it into some hidden dwelling beneath the sands. Either way, she's more than happy to roll with it, reaching in and pulling out two sticks.[break][break]

With a 'bzzt' and a buzz, the sparklers are lit, the lone bucket pulled close with the remnants of the first still smouldering within. Unlike before, she smiles in the faint glow, watching the lights bloom as she offers one for Isaac to take.[break][break]

With misty oceans below and the full moon hanging high above, it was a beautiful night for the beach. Isaac only wished he'd thought to bring food. Oh well. Next time, surely. Sonething told Isaac this was far from the last time he'd spend the night like this.[break][break]

He made it out. Eris made it out. The scars, the guilt, those would always linger. However, the chains were pulled from their bodies, and the wounds they left in their wake could finally heal. It was a step, and maybe that was all Isaac could ask for.[break][break]

"You're good at this," he pointed out, noting how easily and confidently she held the sparkler. Isaac had it ever so slightly distant from himself, taking her burn warning quite seriously. "Never really had any of these before. Clearly, it was a bit too much excitement for sleepy ol' Lavaridge."[break][break]

"Wonder if that's why I'm always so Much. Gotta make up for lost time, yeah?"

An oxidiser that creates oxygen to burn. And then, you've got the binder that mixes the two up so you can put it on a stick to make a sparkler."[break][break]

As she explains, she begins to move the stick around, idly tracing patterns in thin air and giggling at just how intently Reiner watches the light.[break][break]

In some ways, Eris was far beyond her years. In others, she'd regressed behind the curve. It occurred to Isaac that, most likely, she hadn't been to school in ages. When was her last checkup?[break][break]

How much baggage was she carrying without a therapist?[break][break]

As the target of his worry shifted from the sparkling flame in his hand to the child by his side, Isaac'd grip on the sparkler eased. He looked much more natural with it now. Isaac had always been prone to neglecting his own self preservation when others were in need, and sometimes that payed off.[break][break]

"Sounds like fun," Isaac said, realizing he had no real birthday traditions to bring to the table. Last year was the first he could've even spent celebrating, and between how busy he was and his own reluctance to be celebrated he kept it on the downlow.[break][break]

Maybe he and Eris weren't so different.[break][break]

"I still gotta figure out mine. But, there's a lot I gotta figure out still. And you sure didn't help with that, buddy!" Isaac's callout to the ocean was met by the mists quivering slightly. Was Suicune laughing? That little shit. "I think next year's gonna be the year for it. No more excuses."

In a way, it's been somewhat fun: lighting sparklers without adult supervision, playing around until the sun rises upon the horizon. But the cold of the seasons has always matched her heart in wrapping the idea with a bittersweetness.[break][break]

The ebb and flow of waves reflect the flames dancing higher, the sparkler in her hand slowly but surely crawling towards its end.[break][break]

[attr="class","textbox"]The best way to honor his memory would be to do just that. It occurred to Isaac that he was unsure if Eris meant Chu-e Choi or her birth father. Just as grimly, it occurred to him that for all intents and purposes it didn't matter.[break][break]

Either way, he'd make sure this memory lived on.[break][break]

His own sparkler was winding down, too. How long had they been out here? It felt like they'd spent all night together, and yet also like it had passed too quickly. It was bittersweet to see it go, but it wouldn't be the end. Not if Isaac had any say in the matter.[break][break]

"S'the funniest thing. I've spent so much of my life running, it's hard to know what to do once I stop." Running from his sibling, superior to him in every way. Running from his father, whose scorn cast a cloud of darkness over his life. Running from his home, as if distance could suddenly fix everything. Running from Rocket, because he refused to let his story end there.[break][break]

Running from himself. He was so tired of running.[break][break]

"Did you know Elisabeth Fiorelli's place burned down? The old floristry?" Surprisingly, she hadn't been the one to do it. For as willing as she was to let Petalburg fall into disease and decay, she'd always left the old building standing. Had she come back to finish the job? Or did someone else put it out of its misery? "I kinda wanna see if I can fix it back up. With the woods touched up, it just feels kinda . . . sad, leaving it like that."[break][break]

"It's silly, but. Maybe if I'm able to help, they'll let me stay there." The closer he could be to the Woods, the better. Zephyrus, Dandori, Ceres, and Sectonia were already holding down the fort, but he couldn't keep that burden on their shoulders. "Been too long since I've had a place to stay. And I bet Michael Navidson'd be glad to have me stop haunting his backyard, at least."[break][break]

He had no idea if he'd even be able to settle down. When he and Locke gave it a try, their restless asses barely hung around their home. Wandering was in Isaac's DNA, and it only got worse when Suicune gave him the restlessness of the northern wind. On the other hand, the Woods had been the place of his rebirth. It felt like a home in a way Lavaridge never could.[break][break]

It also reminded him of the life he could have led, had he ever swallowed his pride and learned to slow down.[break][break]

"You do know wherever I go, there'll always be a place for you, right?"

"Chu-e's wasn't the one that made that promise." His name feels weird upon her tongue, a bitter numbness slathered across as she mulls it over. "And if he had been... he's broken it several times over."[break][break]

By death, by abandonment. By reasons so far out of her control.[break][break]

"It's weird, right? Kinda like... there's so much going on and suddenly-" With the swish of waves, her sparkler quietly fizzles out. "It's not even like... explosive. You're not left with anything big that you have to immediately deal with. But you're just... so used to dealing with things constantly?"[break][break]

Her eye catches upon the curling wisps of smoke that drift onwards.[break][break]

"I think it'd be nice. Putting the place together again. Places like that remind me of home, back in Vermilion. Away from people, lots of nature. Could even have a whole garden..." To give an idle mind food for thought, to fill idle hands with a purpose. She regards his offer for a little moment, peeking at him through the corner of her eye.[break][break]

"I don't know if I'd stay though."[break][break]

[attr="class","textbox"]The bitterness stung. Chu-e Choi was far from perfect, but they genuinely loved Eris with all of their heart. For a moment, Isaac wondered if he should let sleeping dogs lie. However, Suicune wasn't the only secret he'd been waitimg for the right moment to reveal.[break][break]

"Eris, wait." From out of his bag, Isaac pulled a simple, carefully wrapped gift. Inside would be a hand-woven bracelet, its artisan unmistakable. "I know there's a lot you're hurting over. I'm mad at them for it, too. But . . . they wanted you to have this. Told me you'd know what it meant the second you saw it."[break][break]

Isaac couldn't replace the home she'd lost in Hoenn any more than the one Kanto burned. Unlike that one, at least he was able to keep a piece of this home safe for her. It was the only fitting payment for the trials he'd helped Chu-e overcome.[break][break]

"Hey, sis. I became a brain surgeon for you." Ha. She'd find that more farfetched than the avatarship.[break][break]

At her bittetness, her curiosity, and her hesitation alike, all he could offer was that warm smile. He remembered how his chest siezed when the woman he loved offered to move him in, how he felt unworthy of her presence in the throes of his deepest traumas. He knew how it felt to hesitate, even when it should be a good thing.[break][break]

"You don't have to stay if you don't want to, silly."[break][break]

"All I want is for you to know, no matter what, there's a place for you in the world." It wasn't just an invitation. It was an open, unending offer. "A warm bed, a room of your own, and whatever food I can whip up for you. If you want it, my door'll always be open."[break][break]

A wry smirk spread across his face. "Unless you'd rather have to pick the lock. I know you love outsmarting me."

It takes a moment for her to acknowledge its existence, another for her to finally reach out and take it.[break][break]

They're based on some old Kalos legend, he said, where an old woman captured all the bad in her village. He made them when he was feeling lonely and unloved to feel better.[break][break]

2 years ago, when she'd broken so many rules, when they'd sat down and talked a little about the messed up things in their heads. She's quiet when she lays her eye upon it, still as she listens to him ramble on about a home for her.[break][break]

The magic in them only works if you give them to someone else.[break][break]

Her cheeks burn, her vision grows blurry until she blinks and her tears kiss the sand. He knows. He knows what's happened to Chu-e, he's at least seen him.[break][break]

He's alive.[break]

Why hasn't he come back?

Her fist clenches around the bracelet, crushing the wrapping as she punches Isaac's shoulder.[break][break]

He knew. And he'd never told her.

There was never enough of it, and what little there had been was never right.[break][break]

From the innermost workings of Sootopolis, to a hospital bed, to an island rife with horrors, to a rift in the fabric between dimensions, to an active warzone. Even now, in what precious little time he and Eris spent together, there had been laughs, panic, smiles, tears, and rage. All the while, this little secret burned a hole in his soul, waiting to be delivered.[break][break]

Just like with her hesitation, just like with her fear, just like with her pain, Isaac didn't dare fight it. In fact, as her tiny hand smashed into his shoulder, he turned it ever so slightly to make sure she didn't hit bone. Right now, even as she attacked him, she was his only concern.[break][break]

"It's okay." A small, trusting smile spread across his face. "Let it all out."

It wasn't the answer Eris wanted, but it was the answer Eris would get. Chu-e Choi had sworn him to secrecy, and frankly, Isaac agreed. The last thing he wanted was for Eris to charge off towards Hoenn's deadliest city. At best, she'd get herself killed. At worst . . .[break][break]

It didn't matter if she rained blows down on him with every word he said. He'd been tortured to an inch of his life more times than he was comfortable admitting. An angry little girl wouldn't break him, even if her pain broke his heart.[break][break]

"And they're at peace. And they love you with all their heart. But they were afraid where you could go, they could never follow." Not with the time they had left, though Isaac dared not say that part out loud. "All they want is for you to be happy. To shine more than the brightest star."[break][break]

It was what Isaac wanted for her, too. They both knew she could.

In a way, it was true. Chu-e Choi was as much of a Rocket as they were a member of the League while in Dahlia's custody. They'd just traded one cell for another, the unknown for the familiar. Isaac was sure Eris wouldn't see her once-pa raising hell on the battlefield anytime soon.[break][break]

But that wasn't what Eris meant, was it?[break][break]

He knelt down in the sand to face her. He hesitantly prepared to reach for her, a gentle hand on her shoulder if she needed reassurance or arms to bury herself into if she needed to be supported. He refused to force the issue, however. She was in a raw, painful place. If she didn't want to be comforted, that was her right.[break][break]

"They've done a lot wrong, Eris. Cast a real long shadow. And they didn't want you to be stuck in it for the rest of your life." Isaac remembered asking them about how to handle his ex-Rocket guilt. Their response was to ask him how many war crimes he committed, then to stop being a little bitch and suck it up. Fundamentally, they saw themself on a completely different level from whatever Isaac and Eris were. "They didn't think they could make it right."[break][break]

"Not with the time they had left."[break][break]

Way to go, rip the bandage off. Tell the child her pa was dying. Best birthday gift ever. Though it was better than having her think they lied to her and ababdoned her for no reason. Isaac felt like the biggest piece of shit in the world.[break][break]

Was that fair? None of this was his fault. Chu-e had been the one to run off and leave Isaac holding the bag. They could've told Eris the truth. They could've had an honest, hard talk. Shit, they could've at least had the courtesy of faking their death. Instead, they just disappeared, the gift they'd hoped would serve as an apology instead stoking the inferno that was Eris. They'd said not to trust a snake, and Isaac should've listened.[break][break]

Could Isaac blame them, though, when he had done the same?[break][break]

No. It was different. Rocket were a bunch of grown-ass men. Cult of personality or not, they could put on their big boy pants and cope. It was a disappointment to many. A big one, to some. But it wasn't as unforgivable as abandoning a child. He could understand where Chu-e's head was at, and hate himself for it in private, but it wasn't the same.[break][break]

Mostly.[break][break]

One of these days, he'd find Asher Baran again. Until then, he could only hope the Pokemon he gifted him would light his way.[break][break]

"It was stupid." Not the first word Isaac expected to bubble from his subconscious, but he'd take it. "And reckless. And shortsighted. And . . . damnit, I'm pissed at them for it. But they thought they were protecting you. They didn't think they'd hurt you this much."[break][break]

"They still did. You've got every right to be mad. But, just don't hate them for it. Please."
