And thus the boss fight began. Howard wasn't familiar with the process, admittedly. It wasn't like Varoom Kart 64 had a boss mode. It was just you facing off against seven other people in their own Varooms. It didn't lend itself well to boss fights.

Thus this was new to the archaeologist. Still, he'd win.

Shirley lunged forward alongside Shalin's Beedrill, the virtual beast recognizing the type-advantage that it held over the opponent. While Shalin took point, his Aerodactyl used Fly to dodge any potential attacks, before lunging forward to strike the Tsareena.

Your Pokémon soars to the top of the pyramid to attempt to soften up the Tsaarena for Queen Zing, the dance among the three Pokémon continuing. Shalin is starting to tire, mostly responsible for directing her mount out of the way of the red-eyed Grass-type's ACROBATICS.[break][break]

In an act of desperation, the Tsaarena's aura flares to life, its eyes glowing a brighter red. A wave of pure hatred dislodges Queen Zing, but Shalin and her wasp stay airborne, thanks to your decision to reinforce them defensively prior to the battle's start. Recovering from the harsh aerial attack, the Pokémon shifts its attention to you and your Aerodactyl, bending its legs in preparation to knock it out of the air with a vicious HIGH JUMP KICK.[break][break]

Even in a virtual world, Shirley is as strong as ever. Her wings cut through the digitized space like a scalpel as she aimed fast and true towards the Tsareena's form. The blow landed, but the fight was not yet over.

There was, as always, a second phase.

"C'mon, this'll be easy!" Howard breathed at the screen. The virtue of games was that Howard did not need to show his ability on the field. He could press buttons and the game would do it for him.

He rarely worked with Shalin, despite their quest together. The chance to do a combo attack was too delicious to ignore.

"Alright, how does this work? Alright, Shalin." Howard muttered at the screen as he tapped away at buttons. "We're gonna do something really cool."

A Drill Run to pierce through the beast's defenses, and an Iron Head to nail it in.

"Let's call it... Ground-Cracking Spear."

You urge Shalin to coordinate a combination attack with you. She abruptly reins her Beedrill back, her foreleg stings whirling rapidly from a DRILL RUN, pinning the attacker down. Her stomach sinks as her mount raises her deadly rear stinger, thrusting it into their large foe from behind with enough force that it might seem the friendly Beedrill is trying to playfully buck her off.[break][break]

There is nothing playful about the brutality the Beedrill subjects the Alpha to. The grass-type sounds an unnatural squeal as her foe starts vibrating her wings at full speed and power. The trapped Pokémon squirms and screeches as toxic and corrosive Queen Beedrill venom ravages its insides, leaving room for your half of the combination attack to land the finishing blow.[break][break]

Even after the giant gives up the ghost, the Pokémon continues to mutilate the Tsaarena's flesh with vibration so powerful that Shalin's legs start throbbing in pain. It takes several minutes before she is comfortable continuing through the newly-opened passage you can see light out of. She switches ride Pokémon yet again to Prance, a Wyrdeer, who is quick to strap her on with a PSYSHIELD before ascending the shallow staircase to the top, outdoor level of the ruins.[break][break]

All that is on top was a dais with an image of the legendary Pokémon Regigigas mysteriously wavering under its surface. Shalin mentally guides her mount toward its center and the source of the chrome light. The two are covered in the same light as she reaches for the similarly-colored medallion roughly the size of her open hand.[break][break]

You got the CHROME MEDALLION, one of the Medallions of Eight! A relic of the Worldshaper's divine strength, the unparalleled raw might it bestows defies the passage of eons.[break][break]

"I don't know about you, but I'm starving. How about we head for Lavaridge Town and get ourselves a nice dinner? My treat!" she offers, the Medallion in hand bestowing her with a surge in vitality. At last outside of the ancient pharaoh's tomb, you are free to leave.[break][break]
