“Shit.” A gruff discount detective swears as he dips behind a tree. His life almost ended on the edge of a Lycanroc’s claw. That thing meant business. Heart thumping, he tries to calculate his next move. This forest is crawling with shadow Pokemon. He’s died twice. The first was to a random Froslass. The second was to his own shadow Pokemon, an Infernape named Wukong.[break][break]
“If I had known taking you in would have gotten me into so much trouble, would’ve just let you stay with Melody.” He says to a Pokemon that isn’t there. Only his ability will save him now, useless though it may be.[break][break]

If you die trying to achieve an objective, you will receive a clue towards that objective when you respawn the next night. You may gain multiple clues.

“Where the hell are you now, All-Father? Between Lopez and you, we could get through this forest no problem.”[break][break]

Clamping a hand over her mouth, she tries so hard to hold her breath as something slithers by the opposite side of the tree. Her heart races, her head screaming as she clo- No, she can't afford to close her eyes in a forest like this. Not when she needs to remain highly aware of just what lurks in her surroundings, no matter how terrifying it might be. If it's for her pokemon, if she can possibly save them from something she had unknowingly inflicted upon them, she can... No, she will do it.[break][break]

A screen briefly flashes into view, a taunting reminder of the powers she's been gifted to deal with this seemingly impossible task.

Boxes are your safe haven, a refuge from the dangerous world beyond. You are invincible within them, but cannot interact with anything outside of it. Anything that creates an enclosed space with only one entrance / exit may be considered a box.

The slithering seems to have gotten quieter, but she doesn't dare to peek lest she find an Arbok rearing its poisoned fangs at her. Instead, she chooses to set off in the opposite direction, fervently praying that she doesn't end up running into something worse.

And, wouldn’t you know it, the two players run smack dab into one another. Their bodies meet with a soft ‘thump’. Navy’s sent sprawling. At first, he thinks he’s encountered another shadow Pokemon. His death, then, will be inevitable. When he opens his eyes and sees another person, he breathes a sigh of relief.[break][break]
“Off the road!” Navy says, crawling into the bushes nearby and praying that she, he assumes it’s a she, will follow him. His name tag flashes: NAVY, DISCOUNT DETECTIVE. What the other person chooses to make of that isn’t a matter for him to decide.[break][break]
All he can do is crawl and pray, as he hears something bear down on them.

Following the call they make, she crawls into the bush right next to him, huddling as close to herself as she can if only to feel a little safer. And of course, in the moments where they are forced to be silent, she gains the chance to glimpse at his tag. The gears in her brain begin to spin, faster and faster as she begins to connect the dots.[break][break]

There's loud crackling, ragged panting and an ominous growl as something sniffs about. But just as it begins to wander closer, narrowing in on their scent - Something rustles and howls in the distance, seeming just enough to catch the attention of whatever follows. Claws scrape against digital roots, a howl echoed as the creature's footsteps grow further and quieter.[break][break]

"Navy?!" It's then, and only then, that she lets that breath she didn't know she'd been holding go. "You're not stupid enough to actually use your name for this, are you?"[break][break]

No... actually, he does seem like the kind to do that. If only because trying to come up with nicknames requires a little too much thought and not enough action.

Honesty is a double-edged sword, and he has a hard time shaking that curse. “My name’s Navy. Not my fault the system thinks it’s a nickname.”[break][break]
And that, as he sees it, is that. The end of the discussion. A point that brooks no argument. His name, given to him, that he will wear like a badge until the sun burns out of their sky.[break][break]
Besides, with a forest full of shadow Pokemon, they have bigger fish to fry. Something sniffs the air around them. Hiding in their bush, they’re safe. For now. That’s another one of his hints.[break][break]

Protip: These guys have no spatial awareness. Break line of sight and they stop caring. Unless—

“Don’t know who you are. Gonna guess you’re still looking for your shadow mon, huh?” Hunted though they are, he’s safe for the moment. There’s rumors about what happens when they find them.[break][break]

With everything they know, it’s the numbers game that lets the Pokemon win. Two heads are better than one. Something tells him the Pokemon in the woods won’t be alone.[break][break]
“If something catches sight of us, split. Hide behind trees. We’ll distract it. Keep stuff from getting focused on one person. If we keep moving through the woods, we’ll see one of our Pokemon eventually.” Once more, thinking out loud. Strategizing. “If we can catch one, our life gets easier.”[break][break]
“Let’s go.” He moves from a bush to a tree. A large, shadowy figure skulks past. True to the hint, since it can’t see Navy directly, it doesn’t stop to investigate or pursue further.

Nodding rigidly, she quickly slinks from one bush to another, covering her head in the first few moments she hides within just in case a pokemon comes bearing down upon her. If this were real life, the branches would probably have been poking into her limbs and making her all uncomfortable with sticking in here for too long. But from this position, she can just barely make out Navy's figure, ready to make a move to the next hiding spot as soon as the shadow Liepard passes by.

The Liepard sniffs the air. Eris seems to favor the bushes. Navy prefers trees. Somehow, it’s gotten neither of them caught yet. The Liepard raises its head. It catches a scent.[break][break]
…a scent? That wasn’t in the protip. The sheriff wonders just how useful those things really are. Instead of crying over spilled milk, he draws it away from Eris in another way. Pursing his lips, whistles. The high sound cuts through the air. It pierces the silence, drawing the Liepard’s attention. It skulks away from Eris, over towards Navy.[break][break]
Before it can catch sight of him, he dives into the bushes himself. Hopefully it will investigate the source of the sound, find nothing, and move on. If only he could be so lucky. There’s no consequence here beyond ejection. That in and of itself seems hollow. He wants to know what happens next.[break][break]
That urge is poison planted in his heart by all the friends made this past year.[break][break]
“Just gotta find Wukong.” He whispers.

From the twisted treelines, an Infernape howls and screeches.

Navy is saved by a wild howl. As the Liepard draws near, it is ambushed. Jumping down from the tree, the fire monkey shrieks. A mad smile rests upon his lips. Wukong was a wild thing before shadow corruption took hold. Lost to the throes of that infernal power, he is stronger. Wilder. Unrelenting.[break][break]
One fire punch from his iron fist sends the Liepard reeling. Giving an ook of triumph, he starts dancing around the clearing. The sound draws more shadows from the woods. More and more begin to circle, seeing what they can make of the Monkey King. Wukong barely notices them. He’s too busy locking eyes with Navy. A shadow Froslass charges them. Raising a lazy hand, he shoots off shadow fire. [break][break]
“Oh shit.” Navy curses. “Wukong. It’s me. Navy. Your new pal. I took you from Melody, remember?” A pink ball rests in his hand.[break][break]
“Ah, screw it.” As Wukong charges him, eager to kill him for the second time, he disappears into a flash of red light.

Because she, on her own, is useless. Because on her own, she stands no chance against a feral pokemon that chooses to rip her to shreds. Because Reiner cannot reach her here, because Mesprit may not watch over her. Because everything is pitted against her and she cannot possibly fight them off on her own.[break][break]

Something else spills through the overgrowth, a muddy wave rising to caress the branches of trees as it mercilessly crashes down on the vulnerable Lipard. Ghostly fires dance around the clearing, rage of tormented souls parading through the horde as a Basculegion invites itself right to the party. And his eyes lock onto the weakest looking creature out of all those present:[break][break]

A child. His own trainer.[break][break]

He roars, storming past the Frosslass and Navy as he lunges right at her. Suppressing her voice, Eris runs, diving for the tree hollow she'd been eyeing just moments prior. And as soon as she crosses the threshold, a status screen pops up beside her -

Invulnerable

Cetus slams right into the tree, sharp teeth ready to dig into her limbs and drag her right back out. And yet, as his maws shut down on her arm, he realises that the fright in her eyes doesn't quite translate to the pain that she must be feeling. Frustration brews, he's beginning to Thrash, ready to put his whole weight into yanking her out of the hollow if it means being able to subject her to all this pain.[break][break]

But she refuses, digging her heels into the earth and pulling back with all of her weight. As terrifying as it is to have her arm completely in the maws of a hungry beast, as long as she remains in this small space, she can't be hurt.[break][break]

"Get... IN HERE!"[break][break]

As long as she remains in here, she's unable to affect the things outside of the box... but what happens if she pulls them right in with her?
