Veteran of countless scraps in Hoenn. Hero. Poster child for children too young to know what they’re signing themselves up for. Avatar before he was even eighteen. Known affectionately as Doug when Eris Halla brings him up.[break][break]
Navy hates that he’s here today for this purpose. He’s not an atheist, he’s seen too much to doubt the existence of a god. Doug makes him think Arceus a cruel creator.. This kid should be running the roads, striking out with girls, dreaming about adulthood, not serving as a mentor for new AQUA inductees.[break][break]
Yet, here they are. At least the location’s informal. Navy sits on a pier on the edge of town, watching the horizon and fishing. His gym’s just down the way. There will be challengers coming in the afternoon. For now he watches, waits. Prays that the weather doesn’t turn sour. If a torrent starts, they’re all in trouble.[break][break]
“Thanks for coming, Sullivan.” Navy says when the kid arrives. “You want a bee- eh, maybe not.” He’s got a cooler at his side. Inside are soft drinks, beer, and some ice cream kept cool by the ice.[break][break]
“Hope you don’t mind meeting like this. It’s sort of my job to watch the sea right now.” And oh how it’s made him stir crazy. He can’t do any of the things he’s known for. He’s had to leave investigating the Ultra Deep Sea to others. His deputies and other League officials have taken over mining duties down there. He can’t be a sword or a fist when he’s forced to sit here and wait.[break][break]
“Eris talks about you all the time, you know.” That, he says with a smile. Just her name perks Navy’s mood right up.

Well, if it made it any fairer— Doug had striked out with a girl.

Doug smirked as the gym leader quickly dropped the offer, a snort getting caught in the back of his throat.

"'ppreciate the offer, Sheriff! I don't drink anymore, though. Thank ya kindly." He said, leaning back onto his arms as he kicked his feet at the edge of the pier.

He didn't immediately reach for any of the softer drinks in the man's cooler either. He seemed more focused on the horizon line, eyes drawn to the distant, merging blue.

"Don't mind it one bit. View's fantastic, nevermind the breeze!" He said cheerfully.

It was embarrassing to think this of himself, but he was pretty sure that he had achieved the mindset of a sage at some point during his Galar-stay. Probably after reaching 30 years of age as a virgin. Or maybe it was 40?

Maybe he was suited for the life of an ascetic.

"She does? That's comforting. With that in mind..." He said, half turning to the man before bowing his head. "Thank ya kindly for lookin' after her and Hideo Kino, Sheriff. I care for them a lot— but it's very hard to keep 'em out of trouble on my own."

“Smart man.” The sheriff ruminates, sipping on his beer. “This stuff’ll kill you.” His grin has a hint of wolfish camaraderie. There’s wisdom in the bottom of a bottle, and those that find it wish they hadn’t.[break][break]
“My pleasure, really. It’s like I tell people all the time: kids like them are the future. They’ll grow up and have to rebuild after we all win the war.” And he treats it like a matter of if, not when. Maybe that is foolish to this young veteran of a thousand battles, but the sheriff’s optimism carries the man through the dark times.[break][break]
“Got a few questions. Nothing weird or out there, but it’ll pass the time. You’ve been in the fight for a long time, while I was sitting on the sidelines. I could ask Kyle a lot of this, or Melody, but I think it’s best to get plenty of perspectives on this war, everything that’s happened. Can’t wrap my head around most of it. Eighth grade education don’t go very far.” He grins at the grammatical slip of the tongue.[break][break]
“So, Hoenn’s pretty crazy these days. Would you say it’s crazier now than it was back during the war with the ultra beasts?”

He didn't say anything immediately, eyes moving away from the man, to the far horizon.

"Ugh. I just hope it ends before they're my age." He snorts.

Neither Hoenn nor the international community had any intention of interfering with the rocket run Kanto.

Even if the battle in Hoenn ended in the league's victory, a spider with its head intact would not perish even if all its limbs were removed.

As things were, the war would go on forever.

Speaking of war, though.

"I wasn't an active soldier, then." He informs the other man. "Too young to enlist— though to be honest— I didn't care. I was going through an edgy phase."

Hoenn had whooped Rocket's ass with FERNANDO SILPH and kyle lopez at the helm back then.

But, once again, it had done nothing about the true, untouched rocket back in Kanto.

He had been pissed.

"I did have my house blown by a Blacephalon towards the end, though." He noted apathetically. "Otherwise, I guess it was more dramatic. The fighting was pretty intense, compared to more recent battles."

Post-Dormitum and that island conflict had been rather tame by Hoenn standards.

Beat.

"The world never threatened to end via tactical meteor strike by way of dimension hopping ninjas, though, and it is called the Three Day War, so I would say we've got it pretty handily beat nowadays."

However intense it was, it had only taken them 3 days to settle it.

Perhaps proof of the league's power and competence when not having rocket constantly nipping at their heels. Or perhaps proof that the Megalopolans were not much of a real threat.
