The deafening click of the door closing followed Tempest when he exited declan walsh's office. He stood there, dazed, staring at the nameplate on the metal door for a solid thirty seconds before snapping out of it.[break][break]

Turning on his heels in a quick movement, Temp's footsteps padded on the Sub's floor just down the hallway. Towards the office of one Cillian Quinn.[break][break]

Tempest looked rather somber and thoughtful when he stepped in front of Cillian's office. Then he blinked, realizing that Ellis was waiting, and his expression relaxed. In fact, his whole body did. A slow melting of tension that was replaced with a giddy energy.[break][break]

"Ellis! Hi! I really, really need to see Cil right now." Ellis had no doubt seen him come out of Walsh's office. "Is he busy right now?" He tilted his head, giving his best impression of a sad puppy as he looked to the younger man for answers.

Ellis had, in fact, noted where Temp had come from. Ellis doesn't miss much.[break][break]

"Yes," Ellis responds almost automatically; Cillian was always busy. Even when he had no appointments, if he was on the submarine, he was working. He didn't take visitors.[break][break]

Yet for every rule, an exception.[break][break]

"I'll tell him you're here."[break][break]

Unspoken, yet understood: He's never too busy for you.[break][break]

And indeed, after some brief communication between the two that Temp would not be party to, the heavy portal flashes with pink fey energy and swings inward as the FAIRY LOCK is disengaged and the door opened with Sylveon's TELEKINESIS.[break][break]

"Hello, love."[break][break]

Cillian looks tired. He always does. But there's a softness in the lines around his eyes as he looks at his husband.[break][break]

The door closes behind Temp almost gently, glittering as the lock is replaced.

Ellis speaks to Cillian Quinn, or at least Tempest assumes from his time here many times before. A sudden thought strikes him, and fumbles to pull his pack with his pokeballs open as the man talks. About the time that the door lights up in allowance, Tempest make an 'a-ha!' noise as he pulls a large, fat, ripe mango of all things from his bag.[break][break]

Tempest beams as he sets it on the desk for Ellis, giving the other a little wave as he goes inside. He'd brought a whole bunch of them for Makoto Kurumi as he had previously promised; but there would be no harm in sharing one with the frazzled man.[break][break]

Entering, Tempest beams when he sees Cillian. Even tired and hunched over paperwork, he was the most beautiful thing that Temp had seen all day. He wants to run his fingers through his the other man's hair to smooth down the flyaways.[break][break]

Those soft feelings are resisted, only barely. Tempest looks like an excited dog when he goes to stand, clean and streamlined and official, in front of Cillian's desk. He steels his face- or tries to, anyway. It's clear to see the energy thrumming under his skin and the twinkle of mischief in his eyes.[break][break]

"I just came from talk to Walsh." Serious, so serious, but also not really serious at all.

As Cillian's office door closes with finality, a very confused man holds a mango in both hands.[break][break]

Inside the office, Cillian watches his husband with barely disguised amusement. It would be difficult for anyone else to read him, but Temp would know to look for the press of his lips, the twinkle in his eye.[break][break]

A secret hangs between them that Cillian already knows.[break][break]

Yet who was he to deny his husband the chance to tell him, when he looked so excited at the thought?[break][break]

"Did you?"[break][break]

The laptop in front of the underboss is closed with a soft click.

Bouncing forward, Tempest reaches to grab for Cillian Quinn's hand. Pull it up to kiss his knuckles.[break][break]

"You're looking at Beast Quinn, babe!" He squeezes the other's hand and leans down to be closer. His chest swells with pride at the admission. It felt like his hard work was paying off.

Cillian's hands are rough with scars, but Temp kisses his knuckles with a tenderness that makes Cillian's heart melt.[break][break]

The news is what he expects. Temp was not the only promotion; alongside him, Shred Zeppelin and howard slayte would ascend. The underboss has learned not to get attached too quickly. As quick as they took their positions, so they might vacate them. He doesn't know the others well.[break][break]

For Temp, however, he spares a sly smile.[break][break]

"Am I?" He pulls his hand back, tucking it beneath his chin and leaning back in his chair as though appraising a work of art. "Mm, I don't know about all that. You don't look like a Beast to me. Where are your claws?"[break][break]

With this humour, his own secret divulged: he'd already known. Of course.

"You should worry more about the teeth." Grinning wide, temp shows off his bite. Sharp incisors glinting in the light of the office.[break][break]

But Tempest breaks character easy, even in the middle of a flirt, to flop down without grace into one of Cillian Quinn's office chairs.[break][break]

"You knew! Can't get anything under your nose.' Tempest sighs, dramatic. There had been some vague hope it would be a surprise, but he doubted that Walsh made these choices lightly. There were probably meetings and emails and maybe even faxes before anything was finalized. Cillian had probably known before Temp could even guess.[break][break]

"Stinker. And to think I was going to break out the Fry Daddy for dinner to celebrate..."

"Worry?" Golden eyes gleam with mischief. "Hardly."[break][break]

His own canines reflect the office light as he grins, reaching out to slap his husband's ass as Temp retreats to sink down into a chair.[break][break]

"I'm an underboss, love. 'Course I knew."[break][break]

While there were certainly times that declan walsh made decisions while keeping his underbosses in the dark, promotions were rarely so hush-hush. There were lists, recommendations, discussions, sometimes an argument or two.[break][break]

If he had any regrets, it was in souring his husband's excitement.[break][break]

But he couldn't lie to him.[break][break]

"We're celebrating you," Cillian points out, fiddling with a pen. It flips nimbly between his fingers. "I think you ought to pick what we have for dinner, and I'll do the cooking. I'll even take the night off."[break][break]

No one in Rocket could deny that he needed the break.[break][break]

"Congratulations, babe." Sincere, this time. "You earned it."

The smack echoes in the room. Looks like Cillian Quinn hit it at a good angle. Temp would be feeling the sting for a few minutes yet; but that was more than okay.[break][break]

"Now you're trying to take my perfect housewife title? For shame."[break][break]

There was no heat in the words, only a teasing; sighing, Tempest tilted his head back in the chair and closed his eyes. It smelled like cigarettes and Cillian's cologne in here. Comforting, helping to ease the tension in his shoulders from the excitement. The tense meeting where he hadn't know what to expect.[break][break]

"The only thing I want to eat is that ass." A dreamy sigh, straight laced as he said it. Tempest tilted his head back up and raised a playful brow at the other. "Spicy curry sounds like a good second, though."

Though Temp's flirting lacks Cillian's cheeky charm, it still brings colour to the underbosses cheeks. Heat spreads, denied now for the sake of discussion. But it settles, lingering low, for, "Later."[break][break]

A promise, spoken in a low rumble.[break][break]

Right now, after hours of sitting at his desk, it's hardly the gourmet his husband's dreaming of.[break][break]

"You got it," he purrs, already making a list. "We can stop at the store on the way home." Leaning forward, pen dangling between his fingertips, Cillian plays upon earlier words. "You're not my perfect housewife any more. You're a working man, now." His eyes twinkle. More seriously, he probes, "How does it feel?"[break][break]

He's seen the position ruin people. He would not see it ruin Temp.

If they're leaving soon, Tempest is eager to go. It's not often that Cillian Quinn gets a chance for snatches of time off. So, Temp would savor whatever time he could get without his husband deep behind his desk. It is not something the brings resentment or frustration, Temp understood very well Cillian's place in Rocket. But he couldn't be shamed for being excited over a little extra cuddle time.[break][break]

"Swamp ass." Tempest nods sagely, agreeing that right now might not be the best time for the main course.[break][break]

How did it feel?[break][break]

Instead of a playful answer or some deflection, Tempest's face screws up as he gives it a proper roll in his mind.[break][break]

"Nerve wracking. But I'm happy. I want to be more reliable." Not that Tempest wasn't reliable, but he wanted to be more. He wanted people to stop looking down on him. Cillian would understand what he meant, he was sure.

"You are reliable." Firm, but not harsh. It's warm, instead, affirming rather than scolding. He knew how difficult it was for Tempest to view himself as worthy. Because, "I understand."[break][break]

It was one thing to hear it from a partner, from a friend. It was another to be relied upon by the masses. To be validated in your strengths, to be trusted. From his position on high, Cillian has watched his husband blossom into his role as protector.[break][break]

"You should know something," he says, after a pause for thought. "I never once mentioned your name."[break][break]

To someone else, it might be seen as an insult. But to Temp, Cillian thinks, it's exactly what he needs to hear.

The deep seated temptation to argue, to deny, is still there. But it's easier to push down, now. Snuffing out the voice was almost second nature, before it tried to sink claws of doubt into Tempest's chest.[break][break]

Instead, after a long moment, Tempest just smiles and reaches out to take Cillian Quinn's hand in his.[break][break]

"I know."[break][break]

A soft confirmation.[break][break]

Brown eyes flick up to meet amber, quickly softening.[break][break]

"You didn't?" It's almost breathless. Cillian knew about Tempest's doubts. His fears. Hell, Temp had tried to keep his desire for power under wraps for so long because he was worried. Another feeling, though, was never really worried at all. Trusted that Cillian would know that trying to step in for him would hurt him worse then anything.[break][break]

But the confirmation from the other still warmed his chest and brought color to his cheeks. It always felt nice to know you had placed your trust in the right people.[break][break]

"Thank you."[break][break]

Temp's voice cracks with a gooey sort of sincerity.

They've bickered over Temp's worth in the past. It's easy for Cillian to be frustrated with his partner's utter lack of faith in himself, especially when he's done so much for Cil throughout the years. But with time and bond has come understanding, and he does not approach the subject with the same ferocity as he once had.

He is rewarded with growth in turn, his smile blossoming into a grin when Temp affirms his own reliability.
[break][break]

Though it softens once more as the conversation continues, the warmth behind it only grows.
[break][break]

"Of course," he hums, amusement kindling in eyes of gold. "I didn't say no, of course, but I let them come to their own decisions."
[break][break]

But now that the decision was finalized, the status of Beast taken on as mantle, he can express his opinion in turn.
[break][break]

"I think you'll thrive in the position." Temp would know that Cillian had sought such goals himself, once, before the office of underboss had opened to him instead. "Too many soft-hearted fools have thought they could take the pressure." The bitterness suggests he's thinking of one person in particular: his brother, Rowan Wrynn. But there had been others, too. "You're not like that. I want you to tear those traitors to shreds for me, babe."
