She pats down her jacket to ensure the blueprint is still there. One last look at the makeshift rocket base - a communication tower for navigation on the sea - and then she readies herself for departure with the goods. [break][break]

"Just a ride across the island, Kazu. Should be easy enough."[break][break]

Her scolipede stares down at her, inscrutable as always. The girl was never sure what he made of any of this, if he made anything at all. Faster than any other pokemon she'd seen on land, they'd participated in a good smuggling operation back in Kanto's underground. But those days were behind them, and the way he squinted at the sun, Baki could tell he preferred the dark, dank tunnels under the city. She was much the same.[break][break]

"Let's go, then! We ain't got all day, do we?"[break][break]

Baki climbs onto the giant insect, who rears back in response, eager to move. He's impatient, never able to sit still. They're more alike than not. And with a gentle kick at his carapace, the small cart of supplies they'd "requisitioned" began to move.[break][break]

The Scolipede beneath her twitches its antennae like a knight readies his sword. She can feel the way he tenses under her, he's nervous about something. But it'll take more than bad vibes to turn her away.[break][break]

[break][break] That buzzing in the back of his mind grows louder, more incessant. Like a scratch that needs to be itched.

[break][break] Even as he says the words outloud, the words feel wrong in his mouth. Around him, the INTERDREAM MIST leaks, morphing the air around them as they attach onto the thoughts that have no words. The beach shifts away from the mirage island and into somewhere else. Somewhere far gone.

[break][break] To KANTO.

[break][break] "Pretend?" he echoes, with a shake of his head. He tosses a pokeball before him, releasing his Nidoqueen who breaks the entrance with TOXIC SPIKES that spill across Cinnebar's sandy beaches.

[break][break] "FOOLISH RAT," he growls. "It's the League's pretentious 'pretend' that is leading to Hoenn's failure."

Baki mutters a complaint under her breath, reaching to her belt. Fighting was all Rocket was good for. It's good, then, that that's all she was good for too. She'd been one of Rocket's best and brightest once upon a time. She'd done so many awful things. It was hard to pin it on wrath, but - she knew his sentiment all too well, far more than he probably imagined.[break][break]

"Well then, let's fix that, hm?"[break][break]

The world shifts. Tsubaki hardly blinks. She's fallen through dreams more times than she can count by now, and this isn't so different. But the sensation isn't what takes her aback. It's not what steals her breath. [break][break]

No, it's the location that takes her off guard.[break][break]

"... Just what kinda game are you playing, huh!?"[break][break]

Not a single dream of this region. Not a thought. It was all locked in a box, and she'd thrown away the key. Never again. She never wanted to think about this place ever again. That's why, whenever she'd gone through the mist, it was either Navy 's memories or -- there was nothing but a void, where Kanto should have been. [break][break]

"You say that kinda shit and then you bring me here!?"[break][break]

That's all this was. It had to be fake. It had to![break][break]

"Sumire! Freeze it!"[break][break]

Her trusted partner emerges from her ball, bathed in light. A startling hiss splits the air as she hits the ground, clears the battlefield with a swipe of her tail, and she stares Nidoqueen down, scaring her into submission. Fangs are brandished like knives, and muscles ripple dangerously. She senses her master's distress and responds accordingly.[break][break]

The world melts into a past that he knows as deep as the blood that runs through his veins, so much so that he barely notices it himself.

[break][break] It was no game. If it was a game between life or death, then how much would he have liked to be woken from it? Then again, it was not like the dreams hidden behind his eyelids were particularly peaceful either. No, they were frought with nightmares — always.

[break][break] The Nidoqueen is frozen into paralysis with the GLARE sent her way, but her trainer isn't. Jayden stands atop a hill, wind billowing behind him, as he looms above her.

[break][break] From Rocket's influence.

[break][break] "The League will crumble, and you will fall with it!"

[break][break] He flicks his hand and serrated daggers cut the air, splitting straight for the young woman.

Without warning, daggers coursing with killing intent come Tsubaki's way, and the giant snake shoves her out of the way with her tail to take the brunt. Their sharp edges are blunted ever so slightly by her scales, like a suit of armor. She hisses at the pain.[break][break]

"Dammit..."[break][break]

Baki picks herself up, cursing under her breath.[break][break]

"Been runnin' a long time. From Rocket, from this place."[break][break]

But it couldn't last forever.[break][break]

She'd made it this far, but she'd made a promise. [break][break]

"Kinda sick of it. Running, that is."[break][break]

She nurses her side where Sumire smacked her out of the way. [break][break]

A side-glance to make sure the Arbok is alright - open wounds, but nothing critical - and she takes a step forward.[break][break]

"Think I'm done with that whole thing."[break][break]

The landscape around them shifts - from a desolate Cinnabar, to the ruined streets of Saffron. [break][break]

Bodies are still strewn among the rubble. It reeks of blood and death. [break][break]

Tsubaki doesn't have time to process what she's seeing. It's like she's stepped right into hell. [break][break]

That's fine. Maybe that's where she belongs. [break][break]

"Sumi, wrap!"[break][break]

The Arbok leaps into the air on cue, striking faster than a bullet despite her wounds. Her body surrounds and crushes the paralyzed Nidoqueen, all that rippling muscle bearing down from every angle. [break][break]

Her Pokemon protect her. As the Arbok moves to defend her master, the Admin's eyes gleam. There is something in that movement that tugs at his heart, as if a reminder of a past that has yet to arrive.

[break][break] The shimmer of a young girl and an Ekans, and a boy and an Eevee.

[break][break] The memory disapates, as with the surroundings around them.

[break][break] 'Saffron?'

[break][break] "Are you - " his voice breaks, snapping swiftly towards the Arbok. It squeezes and squeezes, as his Nidoqueen roars with pain. POISON bleeds from her, thanks to her ability, but it is not enough to tear the other way. And sure enough, her health is squeezed out of her too, growing weak in the Arbok's touch.

[break][break] His head snaps towards the girl. Suddenly remembering.

A Nidoran's spines aren't enough to ward away the bite of an Ekans, after all. Crushing the Nidoqueen in her grasp, Sumire feels the intoxication of that predatory impulse, and she squeezes harder, til the pokemon loses its breath. [break][break]

"Yeah. I was there when Saffron was razed."[break][break]

She was one of the grunts who did all the dirty work in the aftermath, too. But she doesn't admit to that.[break][break]

Sumire leaves the Nidoqueen weak, sprawled on the ground. She doesn't deign to take its life. Instead she moves to position herself between the pokemon's trainer and her own, like a shield, her protective instinct stronger than that trained by ages of evolution.[break][break]

"Sometimes I still smell it, in the early morning when I'm still waking up. The blood, the smoke."[break][break]

The mist carries that same feeling, the boundary between dream and reality.[break][break]

The remnants of that city scream at her.[break][break]

THIS IS YOUR FAULT

But she can quell the pang in her heart, the oncoming panic attack, just long enough to glare into the man's eyes. [break][break]

"You, too, huh?"[break][break]

Sumire darts toward him with a hiss, poison-imbued fangs bared. [break][break]

"You're lucky to have lived, then."

[break][break] Jayden remembers it too, the burning sensation of smoke and smog. Rocket had razed so many cities, back then. He and Ashley Shepard had been apart of it all.

[break][break] Joy, pride, glory.

[break][break] Back then, Jayden hadn't cared about any of it. He hadn't known better.

[break][break] But now?

[break][break] "But not lucky enough to have chosen the right side."

[break][break] In another way, his expression tells it all. 'Yeah, me too.'

[break][break] His eyes narrow as he stares at his weakened Nidoqueen. A lesser trainer would have known to bring his pokemon back, but Jayden knows better. He knows what pokemon are used for, what they were made for.

[break][break] His pokemon knows it too. Despite it's weakened state, despite everything, the Nidoqueen leaps in defense of it's master. Fangs dig deep into it's armor — an attack that would not normally injure so deeply lands fatally in the poison-type's spine.

[break][break] Blood leaks into a pool on the floor before them, the INTERDREAM MIST gathering in the shapes of Rocket generals. She can smell the fear and the apprehension in Tsubaki's words. That alone spurs her on, to target the man himself with another poison fang.[break][break]

"Couldn't live with what Rocket made me do, that's why I left. Why I'm here now."[break][break]

Their surroundings swim. A young version of the man mourns his Eevee. A young version of the woman cradles the broken body of her Seviper. Both victims of this war, come back to haunt them. [break][break]

The INTERDREAM MIST is an evil thing, sinking it's claws deep into memories better left forgotten. Though Jayden has the blessing of a demon himself, it doesn't make it easier to see his past coming out in full force to haunt him.

[break][break] It's enough of a distraction that when her snake slides forward, those fangs are able to make purchase into his armor. They sink into his arm, causing him to let out a shout of pain before his instincts kick in. A blade slides into his arm, aiming to stab, before he leaps away from the snake.

[break][break] Jayden can tell already that the toxins have woven his way into his skin. He has to leave, as soon as possible, as much as he would hate to leave this here.

[break][break] "No matter what you say," he growls. "Once a Rocket, always a Rocket."

[break][break] "You and I, we're the same."

[break][break] Quickly, he climbs atop his Spectrier. Wisps of PHANTOM FORCE envelop him, just as violet eyes glance towards red.
