Vines slithered their way out of the ground, slow and coiling with serpentine threat about the man in front of her. Resentment flowed freely from her now, fluidly coursing through her veins with power that ached to be wielded once more.[break][break]

her challenge is met with silence as uncertainty clouds his thoughts, dragging doubt to the surface. would he die for freya morningstar? yes, he would. he would sacrifice himself for her ten times over—[break][break]

"You don't love her at all, do you?" Elisabeth whispered then, and both vindication and sorrow stirred within her at this discovery. How many men lied so boldly, so falsely, about pledging their hearts to another, only to discard them so cruelly? "It's always a lie to get what you want. I don't know why I thought you'd be different, with her."[break][break]

When he turned his cheek, her own hand fell back to her side, empty and lost. A quiet thud announced the plummeting of her vines back to the ground, lifeless and limp as she blinked back the sinister glow from her emerald eyes.[break][break]

"You didn't die for Hoenn, either," Elisabeth said suddenly, and though she had no reason to justify it, this accusation felt truer than her last. "You died to be a martyr. You wanted to be remembered as someone worth being. But what have you done with your second chance at life, Stone?"[break][break]

This time, she was the one to stare at him with self-righteous judgment, letting this unspoken truth speak for her: he'd done nothing but tried to kill the same man he'd saved, trying in vain to undo the cycle he'd spun back into motion.[break][break]

"You speak of lost causes? Look to the splinter in your own eye, before you look to mine."

"don't you dare," he whispers in return, appalled at the accusation. "of course i love her. i love her with every fibre of my being even though i know she will never want what i want. so don't you dare question what i feel for her."[break][break]

but what she says next goes uncontested, he is silenced under the weight of it all because what she says is the truth.[break][break]

what has he done with his second chance at life? he returned only to chase old flames hoping he could rekindle what had already been lost, and when that didn't work, he resorted to what was familiar: work, research, politics. he drowns himself in responsibilities not solely for the greater good but also as an escape.[break][break]

because like freya morningstar, he, too, is lost.
