Regardless of the truth of Theo's observation, it did not surprise Zev to hear. Even before he'd received Avatar-like powers earlier that year, other members of Team Rocket had reason enough to mistrust or fear him.[break][break]

Even in an organization of criminals, many felt unease around a man who murdered as if he were a machine.[break][break]

"We're not a people person," Zev reminded Theo, before downing the rest of his drink. "Our record should speak for itself, both in the past and in the future."[break][break]

The bartender whisked away the empty glass.

Zev almost burst out laughing. The last thing he'd expected from THEO BECKETT, who he'd had the longest working relationship with, was a directive to be more sociable.[break][break]

He could do it, of course. During the last four years, he'd pretended to be someone charming, friendly, and trustworthy in order to fool the citizenry of Slateport. He'd beguiled both the regular patrons of his bar and curious newcomers.[break][break]

Exercising that persona, if at a much more subdued level, around other members of Team Rocket was no trouble at all.[break][break]

Zev pretended to turn Theo's words over in his mind, weighing the wisdom of them against his natural inclination for solitude. Then he relented with a sigh of mild aggravation to hide the amusement bubbling beneath. "Sure. I can do that."

it was an ironic and almost insane ask coming from the underboss known for his cold stoicism. like the pot calling the kettle black. but perhaps it's his own experience that builds him the foundation needed to know better.[break][break]

In his head, Zev was already crafting a version of himself that Team Rocket could get to know. It would be different from his true self in subtle ways, made easier by the fact that no one in the organization actually knew much about him.[break][break]

"I like Bee well enough," he conceded with a tilt of his head. "I imagine the idea of teaching me how to be social would amuse him greatly, too."[break][break]

Zev's gaze flickered to the full glass sitting near Theo that the underboss still had not touched.[break][break]

"Is there anything you would like to know, Beckett?" the Beast asked, growing even more amused at the thought of practicing on the other man. "About me, or about Necrozma."

Once again, Theo raised the topic of Zev's powers. The Beast could not blame the underboss, of course; Team Rocket had it in their best interest to catalog the abilities of all Avatars, not just those aligned with them.[break][break]

Still, Zev knew better than to reveal the exact extent of his powers all at once. Most people regarded him with caution and fear even without knowing them. To see his destructive capabilities, to be reminded of the Darkest Day and the destruction of Galar, would incite levels of fear and panic in people that would work against him, not with him.[break][break]

But perhaps certain individuals could process—and accept—the knowledge better than others. Perhaps Theo, known for his stoicism and pragmatism, was one of them.[break][break]

Once again, Zev's gaze flickered to the drink at Theo's elbow. The Avatar of Necrozma shifted his perception to the threads of gravity pulling on the glass and the alcoholic liquid inside it.[break][break]

Then he pressed on them—hard.[break][break]

The glass crumpled and the fluid compressed with alarming speed. Before the men's very eyes, Theo's drink shredded into particles smaller than they could see, vanishing with abrupt violence.[break][break]

Zev released his mental hold and tilted his head at Theo. "That was a small example. If you want to see the rest, I recommend we go somewhere remote."

it is not the speed that is the most alarming but the intensity of it. the violence that renders the drink nonexistent, as though removed from the very fabric of reality.[break][break]

he will be sure to carve out time in their busy calendars to further witness the extent of zev's powers. until then, his mind is left to wonder, swirling around the possibilities, and more importantly, how best they can be utilized.[break][break]

"If by 'the obvious', you mean an abundance of caution, then that was the main reason," Zev said, heaving a sigh. "There are many in our ranks who fear the repercussions of allying with Necrozma. Those who are familiar with what happened to Chu-e Choi, for example." [break][break]

A lie, of course. He'd intended to put off revealing the information for as long as possible. However, once he and Theo conducted the field demonstration, Zev was certain the underboss would disseminate the details to the rest of the upper brass. And why wouldn't he? [break][break]

"The other reason is that I'm not certain how to describe exactly what I can do. I haven't even had time to sufficiently test the boundaries of my powers." [break][break]

Ironically, the lack of knowledge was a truthful admission, even as he shared it as part of his new, more sociable persona. People were more likely to trust others who showed vulnerability, after all.
