Dewford Town, Hoenn - December

It's been awhile since those battles at Route 105. Long time, really. So much blood, needlessly slaughtered and thrown about. So many graves to be dug for the fallen. So few victories afforded to the weak. The ocean is peaceful today, with an afternoon sun that tries to light the canvas of the island town.[break][break]

Genny liked this town. Always had. Reminded her the closest of home. A little smaller than Hau-oli, but this wasn't Alola anymore.[break][break]

Today, she's meeting with Navy again. Walking into the Gym, this nice-sized blue building, Genny can see the interior walls looking of a child's drawings of dragons and beasts. Something that the redhead remarks as some of the most precious she had seen. The memory of herself when she was a kid, drawing Pokemon too.[break][break]

Outstretched towards that waiting room wall, she traces fingers over a stray Tyranitar, a smile combing her lips upwards... that memory resurfacing in her mind's eye. Mom! Look, I made a Lars-va-tar! she would tell her mother, so young and full of innocence. Captivated by the wave of emotion that innocence had given.[break][break]

Finding herself in a singular seat, Genny pats down her pants, dying up the hair she had into her ponytail. What a pleasant place... popping from her Pokeball, a massive red wolf hulks onto the floor. Red eyes peer at everyone nearby, shoulders sag lazily with a yawn. One of Genny's oldest companions, and most exhausted. Wander.[break][break]

She could sense some tears, and came to check on Genny, who just shoots her a smile. The loyal guard dog seats herself down best she can sit, not intending to leave Genny to her lonesome.[break][break]

Cold loneliness doesn't suit the sunshine.

He supposes this is the best he can do, to help her get started. Mastering one type, in his opinion, is the best bedrock one can lay as a trainer. With ’s help, Navy has made Genny her very own Honedge. Finding the cloth that actually housed the spirit wasn’t difficult. When offered the opportunity to bond with a shiny new weapon was given, the creature agreed readily enough.[break][break]
Dragonslayer, his Aegislash, eyed the blade. Having donated a few loose scraps of its own metal, this Honedge is, in many ways, the larger sword’s child. Its cloth tries to tease Navy’s arm, eager to sup on life force, only to be slapped away.[break][break]
“Look at the time. She’s at the gym already, I bet.” A heavy blanket of snowfall covers Dewford. It creates a strange image. On the right-hand side, a sandy beach. On the left, looking inland, a winter wonderland. Most everyone was staying home, except for the colorful cast of college age kids out on the town, making snowmen and frequenting coffee shops.[break][break]
It’s such an innocent scene. Almost enough to make him forget they’re at war – enough to make him forget he died once.[break][break]
Urging Slow Dancer, the colorful name he has given his Glastrier, through the snow, he charts a course towards the gym. Slow though the steed may be, fitting the name, he’s steady. In the snow, that’s what counts. Arriving, he throws the door open and the wind whips inside. Navy, his horse, and the sword floating at his side all step inside.[break][break]
“Knew you’d get here before me.” He takes off his wide-brimmed hat, putting it on a nearby rack. “See you’re taking my advice to heart. Lycanroc’s a great choice. Got one myself.” Both swords, great and small, look at her.[break][break]
“Genny, I call this guy Dragonslayer.” The Aegislash tips its red blade towards her, glowing like the blade of a hero. “And this one, well, you can call ‘em whatever you like.” The Honedge floats towards her, recognizing her as the human Navy had spoken of.

The cold wind whips through the gym as the door opens. Navy, his massive ice horse Glastrier (of which pulls at a heartstring in her for some reason), and a blade at their side. Genny is up now, tracing over the Pokemon in her presence now, with the Lycanroc towering behind her. Wander was a guard dog, through and through, and to Navy's compliment, her tongue lazily sticks out her mouth, as she gives a pleased growl. "Good afternoon, Sheriff." Her sunshine is back, though hidden beneath it an edge of something new stirring within, a fraction of a moment before Navy's entrance in.[break][break]

"Her name is Wander. She was with me for a mission to save the dogs. She was smaller back then though." She ruffles the Lycanroc, and despite their size, Wander was still just an overgrown puppy. A golden retriever in the form of a bipedal monstrous wolf.[break][break]

Complete with leg scratching herself at the ruffle.[break][break]

Genny was here for another reason though. When Navy reveals Dragonslayer, her eyes focus on them a spell, a moment to push ahead and extend a hand, but chooses to retract it for a bow. She'd heard about the scarves of Honedge and their line; the unique ability that draining property has.[break][break]

Which is why, when the next Honedge comes close to her, hazel eyes meet the standard blue scarf.[break][break]

Not only had this been out of her wheelhouse, it wasn't even in the ballpark. She could handle Ghost types, though not as easily as she liked. But it was Steel and Ghost typed, wasn't it? A deadly combination. And...[break][break]

A challenge. "I look forward to our partnership then... once I get a name for you, that is." There's an exuberance to her spirit. Even if she wasn't good at it, Navy did say to put herself out of her comfort zone.[break][break]

That's exactly what she'll do.[break][break]

Reaching into her own bag for a little egg warmer, she places it down on the chair before her, Wander immediately staring at it, and sniffing it. "You just said you had a Lycanroc... I know you said Rock Types are some of your favorite. Wander's a mom now too, so... would you look after them?" She holds the egg warmer out, a smile on her face. Navy was the best choice for this decision, after all. And-[break][break]

The guilt of letting so many Pokemon die had her think the better option for a baby was the trained professional to nurture their growth.

“Sure, I can do that.” Hattori, Navy’s Greninja, appears and takes the egg, giving Genny a grateful bow. If the cold is bothering him, he keeps it to himself. Burned black and one-eyed, the little Greninja looks like has bigger things on his plate than a little chill.[break][break]
“If you can earn Honedge’s trust enough to make ‘em evolve, Aegislash is one of the best defensive Pokemon around. Its shield is second to none.” Dragonslayer beams at the compliments his trainer offers, although how much a sword can beam is beyond Navy. The eye on the crossguard closes and it makes pleased noises. Close enough for him.[break][break]
“Dragons are my favorites, for what it’s worth. Problem with dragons is that most of ‘em are loners. It’s hard to make ‘em work well together. Now, this guy…” From out of nowhere, an ugly cat rears its head. Tormund looks like a viking warrior cast in miniature, complete with a thick, scraggly beard. As soon as he’s mentioned, he jumps onto Dragonslayer’s grip, trying to wield the sword of kigns.[break][break]
“He’s a great team player. Pair him up with another steel type and they’ll mesh well together. Heck, for that matter, pair a slow moving rock type with a Scizor. The Scizor’ll cover for how slow the people ‘round ‘em are.” Only after saying all of this does he stop, pause, and laugh.[break][break]
“Guess I’m talking your ear off about nothin’. That’s what happens when you start getting old.” Twenty years in Galar left his soul burdened by age. The smile softens into something sad. “We’re gonna get you where you wanna be, don’t worry.”

The promise of one of the most defensive Pokemon around has Genny smile towards the Honedge. Without even skipping a beat, she holds her hand out, knowing the scarf might drain her life force any moment. But instead, its eye blinks. It stares at Genny, and Genny waits.[break][break]

The handle meets her hand. A sophistication to it, as Genny smiles. The Honedge merely looks away. Yeah, this human wasn't the worst in the world. Once out of her grip, the Honedge would float a few feet away.[break][break]

"I like him." The Honedge hides behind Navy now. Metal grumbles echoing, not wanting to admit how sheepish they were now. This human wasn't all bad...[break][break]

Instead, Genny listens. To Dragons, how they're loners, watching Tormund jump up like a viking warrior to grab Dragonslayer to wield. To how they're great team players, or how a Scizor and a Rock-Type together would be excellent choices. All of this, mentally compartmentalized in her head, now on to-obtain list. And when he finishes, almost apologizing, Genny smiles.[break][break]

And shakes her head.[break][break]

"I'm here because I like listening to you, Sheriff. I'll have to look into a Scizor. And maybe a Tormund of my own." Hazel eyes softening at the idea. It doesn't matter how much of her ears are talked off. She believes wholeheartedly that the wisdom will go to good use. He said as much himself.[break][break]

When from the seat, her other two Pokeballs burst open, and Genny is now surrounded by the liquid metal of Balmung the Meltan, and the shiny green Sandshrew, Gordo. Both of them popping out and waving at Navy. They didn't want to be left behind, and Genny finds herself grinning.[break][break]

"Ah. After we talked on Route 105... I found these two. Not together, but. They were two of my most recent finds. Balmung, Gordo. This is Sheriff Michael Navidson. Navy, for short." The Meltan squelches best they can, attempting to go for a handshake itself, as Gordo rolls around in a pseudo ROLLOUT, only going in a singular circle.[break][break]

They were still young. Genny grins. She did take his advice, after all.

“Only got my own Scizor right before the battle.” He remembers. “Musashi’s a handful. Got him on Deep Sea duty today, otherwise I’d pull him out and show you.” Some of his Pokemon, the ones he knew enjoyed fighting, were sent off to inspect the Ultra Deep Sea. Most of them could be trusted to fight and make their way back on their own.[break][break]
“Speaking of which, you wanna do good and get lots of practice in, yeah?” Cocking an eyebrow towards her, he looked her Pokemon over. Each of them were innocent, even the midnight wolf. Each of them trusted Genny completely, he could tell at a glance. Pokemon were innocent like that, childlike. They had a capacity to put their faith in someone that he envied.[break][break]
“Know you’re probably already assigned somewhere, but Dewford needs all the rangers it can get. The town’s understaffed. Bad. Nihilego and all kinds of other monsters come up from the Ultra Deep Sea. It’s a full time job, managing everything that decides it’s gonna invade our reality.” Which, of course, meant he didn’t get much time to rest.[break][break]
“Could be there’d be lots of time to train while you do your job if you talked to Ollie about a transfer.” Not that he would hold his breath. Even with how easy it was to travel, most people didn’t want to be stuck at the far edge of the region.

A Scizor, huh? She'd gifted her only Scyther to , since Genny had read about an interesting evolution. The Scyther would be happier with her girly than her, but Genny could go off her own power. She didn't need to just copy Navy with his recommendation.[break][break]

Easy question to answer at least. A nod of her head, and Genny would hear Navy's own issues. Between Nihilego, which leaves the redhead burning with resentiment, the other monsters, and the understaffed problem, she ponders it for a moment.[break][break]

"I transferred to Lilycove recently, actually. Wanted someplace new. Lease will probably be like that for awhile-" Apartments were apartments, unfortunately. With all the bad aspects. Rent, landlords, and security deposits just emptying her pocket. Lilycove too, for that matter.[break][break]

But there's a hopeful smile. "When I get through my lease, maybe I'll move down here."[break][break]

Lots of beaches... lots of fun summer times, probably swimsuits galore, and surfing. Leaves Genny with a bit of a bad taste in her mouth, but she quickly shakes it off. "It'll be good practice if I go through with it," she adds, and begins stretching. "Nihilego want to come down here, I'll take them on." A little confidence, not terribly too much. The Honedge merely floats nearby, a little closer to watch the stretching redhead.[break][break]

To go along with the stretching, Gordo and Balmung began to stretch, getting limber with their stretches, even if they were tiny. It was the equivalent of kids just working out to the videos their parents buy. "Lots of practice though. I usually go running in the morning, do a little gym workout every day before my day starts, and recently, some of my Pokemon have gotten into it," she explains, Gordo a prime example. That little Sandshrew was stretching his little heart out.[break][break]

Excitable, impressionable. Loving Pokemon. Even the Honedge would stretch their scarf...

“Goode’s trying to get me on the elite 4 and even I wouldn’t mess with landlords.” He makes a sound caught somewhere between a dry laugh and a scoff. He’d had his fair share of bad landlords in lower Slateport. Most of them seemed more like slum lords, but he thinks that a topic best left for someone else.[break][break]
“It’d be much appreciated it if you considered the idea. Sounds like you got time. Ollie’d probably be happy to send you down here from time to time, especially since I’ve got cabanas to spare.” They’d given him a dozen or so beachfront properties to house deputies. Most of them remained empty. He could spare one for her.[break][break]
“Consider it crashing at a friend’s place.” Neutrality gives way to a smile. Behind him, Dragonslayer has begun stretching. Rolling his arms, he pumps his shield in the air. His cheer sounds like a metallic screech.[break][break]
“That aside…League HQ’s cooking up one heck of a training sim. Well…that’s not what Goode probably intends for it to be, but it can be one.” His smile widens, like a cat that’s eaten a canary. “You play a lot of video games?”

"Tell me about it," Genny looks away sheepishly. Last place she was at in Slateport wasn't exactly the best neighborhood for herself. Somehow, during and her mission the prior year, there hadn't been much trouble outside, but she had been in the rougher side of town. At least, not anymore.[break][break]

The idea of cabanas being given to spare, has Genny's interest. The idea to invite some of her girlies, or heck, maybe even . An idea that she'd have to explore, after her venture with glamping that had brought up so graciously. Navy wouldn't mind, surely.[break][break]

"Will take you up on that," she chimes back, a lull of her head as she matches that smile. Charming to the last, no wonder loved this guy.[break][break]

But that training sim idea... "I used to. An old ex of mine was really into sports games, but they weren't really my thing-" and she thinks back about how she dumped that surfer guy in the ocean in Alola. Guy had it coming. Jerk. "Training sim though? I'm sure Officer Concordas would love for me to run through it too. Is it a solo-kinda game?" A casual mention of , someone she regarded highly enough as a mentor![break][break]

Now, wrapping around her shoulder, but careful not to touch the skin, the Honedge that Navy had brought quietly hangs, quite liking the lack of attention, and the allowance to be themselves. Their eye closes, and it looks as if Genny is, herself, a warrior from a game.

There’s time left in the day for them to hurry to Ever Grande. No time like the present to throw yourself into danger.
