The last time he'd been on a mission with MATIAS SILPH, they'd been trying to capture a DRK Triad agent. No, among many other barely avoided disasters, he was to be an escort. But unlike dahlia goode, this isn't for protection. He's supposed to supervise the Elite 4. As much as a man with a rifle could supervise a man representing a titan.

His feelings are mixed on the matter. Mostly negative. The report PENELOPE LIVY showed him from her meeting with the Council had solidified it after ignoring the rumblings from AQUA. Any trust he'd wanted to put into the man by virtue of his rank and his past are soured by the entanglement with Elisabeth Fiorelli. Most of his bitterness had been teased out by Penny already. Even so it lingered, festered. Not another fucking Rocket digging its claws into one of their own.

So he sticks to the mission. He puts his focus on something he knows he can do well. “The site up ahead came out of some sinkhole that appeared shortly after Aqua's last meeting.” Infested with tera crystals and revealing a cool new site all at once. “Small chance of looters.”

on some days, it's some nameless league official he can't be bothered to know more of, and on others, it's people he would've considered allies at one point in time. he should still consider them allies but circumstances have isolated him.[break][break]

"'M sure we'll find something" he said as they cut through underbrush and rougher terrain off the beaten path. A couple of trees had fallen, evidence of the earthquakes that had cracked the earth open. [break][break]

"Not so bad." he said back evenly. "Escorting is how I met dahlia goode ." he said, nodding over at Matias and pointing to keep the E4 from walking into a tree branch. But Matias seemed amiable enough, and Paxton wasn't one to beat around the bush. Especially when he was asked a question. [break][break]

"I read your report from the Council." he said as he shoved aside. "Thought you hated Rocket as much as the DRK Triad." this sours him a little. Paxton is human, and Rocket always cuts close to home. Couldn't even kill him properly and put him out of his misery at this point. His fists tighten as he climbs over a fallen log, eyeing the dirt as it seems to drop down and forwards. Too bad he hadn't brought his skiis. A little snow and it would've been a decent run.

though paxton concordas points and offers his guidance, it is unneeded. it would be too easy to take it as an insult, but realizing he doesn't need to make any more enemies, he refrains.[break][break]

a bitter laugh escapes him at the mere mention of them. to think the council is seated by a woman desperate for power, a rocket sympathizer, and his brother, is amusing.[break][break]

The earth opened up, small tera crystal specimens poking out of the earth and rock. Some merged together with the rock itself. It looks weird. He wonders what could've caused such rapid growths or if it was there all along. He tries not to simmer around Matias, trying to better understand .He wanted to hold out hope. That one of the League's strongest and tenured members wasn't completely gone. [break][break]

"You involved yourself without notice with one of Rocket's Most Wanted, and confirmed to have been one of the factor's in the loss of Sootopolis." he stated, eyes ahead. All of it horrific. But the entanglement with Elisabeth Fiorelli was more of a sticking point to him. Even if you could rationalize the take over of a crippled city, the propaganda revealed from its fall well documented, honey potting a terrorist? [break][break]

And not even doing it well. But Matias didn't look like his strong suits were subterfuge if his track record had anything to say about it. [break][break]

The clearing doesn't reveal much. Some untouched pots that were miraculously intact. Strange paintings on the wall of the sun and the ocean. He pulls out his work phone to begin taking photos. "Why put yourself in that position?" he asked, holding his demeanor together looking back at the E4. They called him the Volatile, and he was certianly doing his best to fit the title. But Paxton wanted a reasoning. He wanted to dissect his actions and make sense of them.

“Maybe. That's why I said factor, not the sole reason.” he said back. “Why not report it?” He asked. Matias was tenured in the League. There's no way he didn't understand the optics of it all. There's only so bad he could look before it began to interfere with his work. [break][break]

The site they find is small and felt more like a giant geode than a tunnel section like in the island at 105. He takes more photos, as he passes through, crunching on broken pieces. He wondered if the dream mist would form.

“Unequivocally.” He said without hesitation. “I don't care for bad press or rumors, but I understand the obstacles they are.” Paxton looked back at the E4. “Actions are different.” Harder to spin one way or another.

He looks for inclusions, the perhaps the revealed section of the site is too small to get a feel of tera crystals spreading through the older layers of rock. For now he just picks up a couple of pieces to take back, all the while taking a moment to give out a measured response. [break][break]

Did he trust Matias? Most would call their bond superficial or tenuous. And while he had his concerns, or more so, his disdain with their actions, it didn't constitute a complete break. Not yet anyway. He eyed Matias. [break][break]

Would he trust him to lead him into battle? Yes. [break]
Would he trust him to lead his family into battle? Also yes. [break][break]

He thinks of CALLISTA MOON , and wonders her thoughts on the matter. She'd be just as twisted up as he would right? It's not looking good, but it's not something Matias can't walk back from. "I do." [break][break]

"You've earned that trust. But you're taking actions to erode it." He'd put his life in Matias' hands, but the more he acted against the League's purpose, the less likely that'd end up being the case in the future. "Why not explain it? If not to other then at least dahlia goode ?" If at least the Commissioner approved, there was nothing else to discuss. So long as she knew in advance.

Paxton's hands tighten as Matias speaks. Lines of logic fighting against each other. Bureaucracy is hard to manage in the battlefield. Snap decisions are often made with completing the mission set as their priority. Not feelings. But still, being able to make well informed, snap decisions is was defined a true leader. He had no reason to doubt Matias. And yet he did. Paxton acknowledged he knew little. He was not in the Commissioner's chambers with Matias. He had no knowledge of the many circling talks around Matias and his behavior, only the latest and worst report: his probation extending into surveillance. [break][break]

The fact that'd it'd come to that was disgraceful in many ways. He knew Matias could be better. He'd proven it. But he hits a snag when he thinks of his unreported involvement with Rocket Underbosses like. "I don't disagree that perhaps the League has been at a stalemate, even losing too much ground, to Rocket." he said, words level and hands tense. "The blasé attitudes of high ranking defectors is worrisome enough. The seeming pass some people give to the avatar is also laughable." he paused. "Being chosen for Avatar doesn't guarantee moral character. Something I think you'd be familiar with." he added, no doubt that Matias wasn't oblivious to the very same being said about him and Groudon.[break][break]

"But I won't trust someone who lays with the enemy." Gods he had no idea how fucking accurate that was. "Take the risks, but you need to argue them with the person that matters: Commissioner Goode." He stared at Matias, sighing through his nose. He's more frustrated than angry.[break][break]

"Why did you involve yourself with Elisabeth Fiorelli , and not include dahlia goode in your decision making process?" He asked, more for himself than anything else.

lay with the enemy, draws a chuckle from him. if only paxton concordas knew the extent of it all. if they were closer, then maybe matias would feel amused enough to share, but with the way things stand, paxton is nothing more than a shaky ally.[break][break]

Paxton stared at the avatar, not done with his line of question. Or well, not satisfied with it. “To what end?” If there was ever a purpose to it. There must be something, even a strange whim. “What did you hope to accomplish?” He can't wrap his head around it. To parley with the enemy over…what? He's surprised Matias had managed to gain an audience. Then again, maybe Matias was an easy mark for them? There's something to gain. He doubts it's the man's betrayal but…you don't need a full swap to tease out important information out of someone. Paxton would mull it over until the E4 spoke again. [break][break]

“You did it to piss off a council member?” No fucking way. He could laugh if he wasn't still busy trying to put it together.

it's hard to question and even more difficult to uncover because there is no reasoning or logic behind his actions. he acts on a whim, following impulses so strong that they could burn an entire region.[break][break]
