The last-minute invitation from ollie morales had ruffled quite a few feathers for GIDEON GRAVES's assistant, who had to juggle rescheduling his day so that the museum director might follow his friend out to Slateport Beach. [break][break]

He'd promised her a thank-you lunch as he hurried out the door. An injured HORSEA sounded quite urgent, after all. Yep, the pep in his step was definitely just caused by the thought of helping a hurt Pokémon.[break][break]

"Ollie!" Gideon called out from farther up the beach, once his CORVIKNIGHT taxi had touched down and he'd walked from the parking lot.[break][break]

As he approached, Proteus the SLOWKING at his side ready to give aid, a small smile involuntarily pulled at the professor's lips at the sight of his friend. [break][break]

They hadn't seen each other for a little while. The ranger still looked as good as ever, though, especially given the way the sun's rays seemed to light him up at every angle. Ollie was beaming — as he always was in Gideon's eyes.[break][break]

"Have you found the Horsea yet?" He asked, breathing a little harder than usual considering his rush to get here.

[break][break] the brunette startled — only a miniscule moment, barely noticable by anyone that wasn't himself — when his name was spoken into the winter air. emerald eyes caught the sight of the museum director as gideon called for him, his voice sounding like liquid honey across the ocean shore.

[break][break] golden skin burned faintly, disguised easily by the sunlight that dappled over his cheekbones, hidden beneath the breadth of his smile that he directed towards the other.

[break][break] "gideon!"

[break][break] ollie tried not to think about it, the images that burned in his mind's eye. the smell of sandalwood and cinnamon, of whisky burning down his throat, of their thighs pressed together.

[break][break] he was really bad at not thinking about it.

[break][break] "have you found the horsea yet?"

[break][break] a shake of his head. ollie felt a little breathless too, cheeks burning with the effort of his smile.

[break][break] "did you travel here okay? i - " he blinked, glancing towards the parking lot that gideon had hailed from. "i hope i wasn't keeping you from anything."

The way ollie morales called his name above the din of the waves was a captivating thing. It evoked memories in his mind, too, not at all dissimilar to the ones currently running through his friend's thoughts. [break][break]

But GIDEON GRAVES was a little better at not thinking about it. He was a reserved man by nature, and there was no alcohol here to stoke the flames of his desire. [break][break]

Instead he settled for a slow smolder, taking in Ollie's smile and letting it settle warmly in his chest.[break][break]

"I did. It was a quick taxi from the museum to here."[break][break]

And although his assistant would beg to differ, Gideon shook his head and assured, "Nothing that can't wait."

relief ballooned in his chest at the other's reassurance, settling something in ollie's heart that he didn't realize was a-patter. there was something warm and sure in the way that GIDEON GRAVES looked at him, which helped to soothe the thing that was aflutter in his chest at the sight of him.

[break][break] 'it's okay. just be normal.'

[break][break] "great!" ollie grinned, and this time it felt natural. normal. he grabbed the other's elbow, tugging him along the shore, as he began walking along the sands.

[break][break] the winter air felt cool on his cheeks.

[break][break] "well, so, i haven't found the horsea yet. i thought we could look for it together." his brow pinched together in thought as he recalled the details of the mission. an injured horsea on the beach, called into the ranger base by local civilians. it's fins were either torn or injured — ollie would take it into the ranger's hold, and hand it over to Melody Miro for rehabilitation through POKEMON HOME.

[break][break] as he spoke, his pikachu leaped from his shoulder and darted across the sand, no doubt in search of their quest.

[break][break] when he was done, ollie's head tilted slightly towards gideon's. his eyes were the color of pine needle and evergreen forest.

[break][break] "so," he said, after a moment. "what d'ya think? where should we look first?"

As the weeks and months of their friendship passed by, it seemed like more and more to GIDEON GRAVES that he was being swept up by ollie morales. It was hard to resist the man's natural charisma and bright, endearing charm. [break][break]

Perhaps because he was so opposite to Gideon himself. It was a foreign attraction; undeniable and new and perhaps even a little envious. Everyone loved Ollie, everyone wanted to be around Ollie — in a way that very few wanted GIDEON GRAVES.[break][break]

Somewhere deep in his chest a certain satisfaction bloomed as he was dragged by the elbow down the beach. Ollie wanted to be with him today. Had sought him out over all others for a mission that obviously didn't require Gideon's attendance.[break][break]

"Ahem," The professor cleared his throat, but really it was an attempt to clear the slight jitters he felt when Ollie looked back at him with those startlingly green eyes of his.[break][break]

"A Horsea couldn't have strayed for from the shoreline on its own. Perhaps it got stranded after high tide receded? If there are any tide pools nearby, we might check there first."

"good idea!" ollie agreed, lips twisted into a grin, as he tugged on gideon's hand and then dragged his friend down to the shore.

[break][break] there were butterflies in his chest when he'd first texted gideon, but now that he was standing in the sunlight with him and listening to the waves crash against the shore, h felt more content. to know that gideon wasn't mad at him for ghosting him for days, and that they could continue on as normal.

[break][break] 'and if he's doing it,' ollie thought. 'why shouldn't you?'

[break][break] it was a rhythm that ollie fell into all too easily — the semblance of normalcy, no matter how real that might have been.

[break][break] "have i told you about pokemon home yet?" he said casually, as he picked at some shells on the shoreline, trying to catch any sight of that horsea that they were looking for. he kneeled down into a tidepool, hand pulling up some seaweed. "it's a really cool that i'm doing with frey and melly."

[break][break] "we're gonna take all the injured and abandoned pokemon and build 'em a sanctuary on one of those mirage islands."

"Oh? No, I don't think you have." He replied, his tone conveying interest and intrigue.[break][break]

"That sounds like quite an altruistic endeavor. With everything going on in Hoenn, I'm sure there's been an uptick in injured or displaced Pokémon."[break][break]

Inwardly, Gideon wondered at the practicality of such a venture. Would the Pokémon be rehabilitated and then released back into their natural environment? Or kept in perpetuity on the island? Perhaps that was determined on a case-by-case basis.[break][break]

"Hm?" As the two men conversed, Gideon looked over Ollie's crouched form, out further into the tide pool. He thought he saw a splash and a flash of bright blue... [break][break]

"Ollie, I think I see something over there."

"exactly!" ollie beamed.

[break][break] he'd thought the same thing when Melody Miro had told him about the idea. the amount of ranger reports that came to his desk, telling about an injured or lost pokemon had gotten almost astronomical ever since the meteor struck. after all, it wasn't easy recovering from a big event like that. things continued even more, when the rifts had opened, ripping sheets of space where pokemon homes had once been.

[break][break] "i knew you'd get it, gids. you're just smart like that - huh?"

[break][break] his compliment trails off as he notices GIDEON GRAVES distracted. his mouth opens, about to tease the scientist for letting his eyes glaze off, when he realized that they had a visitor.

[break][break] sitting in one of those tide pools was a horsea, flailing about. it's nose was full of ink, and it looked like it got caught in plastic charjabug soda rings.

[break][break] ollie wastes no time. he leaps across the tide pools, reaching his hand into the tidepool with reckless abandon.

[break][break] "hey! gids! i got 'er, can you grab those clippers i brought with me?"

ollie morales leapt into the tidepool with abandon, quick to snatch up the HORSEA before it could damage itself any further.[break][break]

In a turn of events that may have surprised his ranger friend, Gideon followed soon after. Field work was second nature to the professor. He'd come prepared, rubber boots and all.[break][break]

"Proteus can heal it a bit, if needed." He offered, before handing over the clippers Ollie had requested.[break][break]

The SLOWKING waddled up behind them, after taking a little longer to navigate the pools. Perhaps it was time to put him on a diet.

"thanks," ollie grinned as took the clippers from his friend's grip, hands brushing harmlessly, and set to work freeing the poor horsea from the confines of humanity's worst crime: pollution.

[break][break] "it always makes me sad when i see stuff like this," he grumbles. the horsea struggles in his grip but ollie is firm in his hold, expert in his fitnesse. he'd done this way too many times before, but it upset him every time he came across it. even before he'd known he'd wanted to be a ranger, he remembered scolding his school friends in his teenage days, whenever they would carelessly throw away garbage without thinking twice about the effect that it had.

[break][break] just like that, the horsea was released with a sputter.

[break][break] holding the small creature out to the waddling proteus, ollie spoke.

[break][break] "already, give it your pro treatment, proteus!"

“Agreed. Especially when much of it is preventable.” [break][break]

It would have taken all of five seconds to cut the plastic rings before discarding them. Even better if the plastic had been recycled instead. In many ways, Hoenn was behind other regions in how it handled the processing of its waste.[break][break]

Perhaps all of the supernatural and absurd events happening on a regular basis took precedence over such mundane matters like environmental conservation. It was a shame. [break][break]

Gideon watched Ollie with an appreciative eye as he worked, smiling despite himself. This was another reason he liked the ranger – the obvious and genuine way he cared about the world around him. But when he voiced his pun… well, the smile faltered somewhat, replaced by a small, disapproving head shake. [break][break]

Still, he chuckled. Though the professor wasn’t a fan of word play, he knew it was all in good fun.[break][break]

“Go on, then. Show him what you can do.”[break][break]

Proteus gave a quick, self-assured nod before releasing a scintillating energy from the jewel at the top of his shell. The HEAL PULSE washed over the HORSEA in Ollie’s arms – and might have even given the ranger a little boost, too.

Ignorant to the attention that his friend was giving him, Ollie crouched gold-touched in the sunlight, smiling bright, as if blessed by something that was greater than God.

[break][break] The Horsea squealed first with surprise before then letting out a noise of release as the healing pulse wandered over his body, filling in the tiny cuts and crevices caused by human's worst design. It stitched him true and healed him whole, so that when Ollie leaped to his feet, he was more than pleased.

[break][break] "Thanks," he said, cheeks dimpling, as a pokeball pressed against the Horsea's spine. One more for Pokemon Home. Melody Miro would be pleased.

[break][break] But of course, a Ranger's work could never end.

[break][break] A sudden beep on his watch alerted him that there were more pokemon in need. A nearby civilian spoke swiftly of a bee-infested cabin that was - ironically - only a few yards away. They could get rid of the pests and in exchange, have more pokemon for the Pokemon Home project too.

[break][break] Ollie's eyes find his, amber-gold in the sunshine.

Though there never seemed enough of it, he found that lately he didn't mind making room for ollie morales.[break][break]

He enjoyed their little excursions together. It reminded Gideon of the field work he didn't get to do as much, now that he was in leadership roles at both the museum and the university. It was nice.[break][break]

Ollie filled him in as they made their way to the cabin so that, when they finally arrived, it didn't take long for them to find the problem. [break][break]

COMBEE hovered around a somewhat large hive that they'd built near the entrance of the cabin. GIDEON GRAVES sent Proteus over to YAWN at them, lulling the bees into an easy slumber. ollie morales would be able to catch them without issue.[break][break]

"Do you think the hive extends inside?" Gideon asked, unsure from this distance.
